Many Nintendo fans know the basic story around Super Mario Bros. 2 as known in the West, and the original sequel which would be called Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels outside of Japan. It's a familiar tale, but one nevertheless with some detail that's reserved for those keen to delve into the minutiae of the history around its release.
Popular gaming channel Gaming Historian naturally likes that detail, and its most recent video from the weekend tackles the story around how both games came to be important in how Mario was perceived around the world. The Western Super Mario Bros. 2 - a re-skin of Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic - was vital in its own way for introducing key mechanics and characters that would become ever-present in the franchise.
Grab a comfy seat and check out the video below.

I watched this recently & thought it was great. An interesting look at the reason we got the Super Mario Bros 2 we did & not the Japanese version. It goes into good detail too, very interesting facts in here. Excellent video Norm!
I wish there were a Super Mario Bros 2 option in Super Mario Maker. This game gets very little love and I consider it just as much a "real" Mario game as any other.
Nice. NL generally has good stuff! Informative...
The music from SMB2 might be my favorite of any Mario game pre orchestra recordings.
Even though I'm tired of every article relating to SMB2 suggests how "it isn't REALLY SMB2", this was pretty fun to watch. I didn't know you can't run in DDP.
Also, that guy's cute. Just throwing that out there.
So Mama became Luigi... So Mama Luigi was a thing before the Super Mario World TV show?
@allav866 mama luigiiii haha I love that. I have the dvd box set and love that episode
I found this video fascinating. Growing up this was one of my first NES games I never imaged its history. Cinnemassacre also did a play through where they pointed out all of the differences to both versions. It makes me love this game even more.
I'm glad Norm is being featured here more often. His stuff is fully informative and extremely thorough.
Best 2D Mario game of all time!
I wish they would make a "New version of super mario bros 2" on 3DS, Wii U or NX. I find Super Mario bros 2 is overall a slightly better game than the Standard 2D Mario's, because the games comes with so much variety since you can change character for different game play styles, and in my opinion the game has a better creative level design than Super Mario.
@Meaty-cheeky Be careful what you wish for

@Goob Ahaaaaa Beat me to it
I was a little child when this game was released (the Western version), I played it at a friend's house and I loved it. It was the first Mario game I've ever played. Then I played Super Mario Bros. 3 and later on my father gave the SNES, Super Mario World and Street Fighter II to me and I was the happiest boy in the world!
Super Mario Bros 2 is one of my favorite 2d Mario games. It was so unusual and just plain weird at times and I loved it.
By the way, I can't wait for Super Mario All Stars to arrive on the eShop!!
"...you can play it on the Wii or Wii U Virtual Consoles." Wait, no 3DS mention? :
Otherwise, this was a good review.
@Goob I...don't think that's what he had in mind...
Great video as per usual. This guy is great!
@allav866 You just stole the words out of my mouth!
I had a somewhat confused understanding of this whole deal, but now I actually understand it, so thanks, NL and Gaming Historian!
Also, I see Villager, Ike, Little Mac, and Ness amiibo in the background. Don't have Villager and Little Mac...
Neato!
I already knew a few of the facts, but the whole story is pretty interesting. I this game had one of the best Mario sound tracks in my opinion!
@Goob
New Super Mario bros 2 on the 3DS wasn't really any good haha, I will say that the closest game that relates to the original Super Mario bros 2 is Super Mario 3D Worlds.
Lots of people hate on this game, but for me it was a childhood favorite. And I'm glad its Super Mario Bros. 2 and not Doki Doki Panic over here, because to me it truly feels like a Mario game and should stay that way.
Has anyone here seen the Mario DYKG videos? If so the Japan one isn't the real one.
@grumblebuzzz
I'm excited about Mario Maker but it would become so much better if they had an option for SUper Mario Bros 2 levels.
@Luffymcduck
That would be awesome, mybe in Super Mario Maker 2.
I can see why SMB2 is absent from Super Mario Maker, since it plays so wholly different from the other Mario games. I kinda saw the gameboy Donkey Kong, and later Mario vs. Donkey Kong games, as the successors of SMB2. Closest in gameplay, anyway.
That was a great video, I never knew about the television show/festival tie in. It was nice to find out that Miyamoto felt Doki played liked a Mario game from the beginning and I love how Papa looks just like Mario.
I had no intentions of watching that entire video. Yet that is what I did and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I very much remember SMB2 being extremely hard to find during the Christmas of 1988. That cartridge was more rare than a Fire Emblem related amiibo. (And yes, I remember that 20/20 report w/ John Stossell).
Luckily for me, my mom worked for a company that had several locations around the United States and she was able to get a coworker in Michigan (we live in Virginia, btw) to find a copy of the game and mail it to her. In an age w/o internet, that was pretty awesome I must say and that Christmas, because of that game, is still one of my most memorable ever.
What did I learn from The Gaming Historian's video? That the same people who did the California Raisins animation designed the cover of the first Nintendo Power!! Too cool!!!
I still have my copy of that first Nintendo Power.
I still have my cartridge that came all the way from the Land of the Great Lakes during that Christmas of 1988.
And I still very much so love me some Super Mario Bros 2!!!
I don't care how many times it's rereleased, if it comes out for my TI-85 calculator, I will be buying and downloading it.
@bezerker99
Is the TI-85 calculator the blue one?
We got one from school some years ago, and still use them.
I have no idea how to load programs onto it with a Mac, but it's still fun using it, none the less. But yeah, I'd really appreciate a working SMB2 there, though that is really unlikely
@Sergio151 and the Irate Gamer. I don't understand the mentality of this being a "fake" Mario game.
@KoopaStarRoad the only game i remember for the TI-85 calculator was Tetris. There is no SMB2 for it - I was just trying to be witty there at the end of my post.
Awesome video! I of course knew SMB2 was Doki Doki Panic but had no idea how DDP got developed or by who. Fascinating stuff! So it really is a Mario game afterall & a fine one at that. Now I feel like playing it. Good times!
