In today's Nintendo Direct a couple of new downloads were given immediate releases in Japan. One of these is Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii U eShop, but there's a fresh option for 3DS owners too in the form of a new Dr. Mario title for the handheld.
Also featuring Dr. Luigi, this new entry in the series promises a range of modes previously seen in the franchise and some tweaks, including one mode where you play with the system on its side. A gauge also unleashes power-ups that can wipe out entire rows, viruses of a certain colour or simply act as an old-fashioned bomb.
We think it also has a mode where two players use one system, but that seems tricky, but there's most definitely online multiplayer and Download Play options.
Out now in Japan, it's safe to assume that this will spread to the West relatively soon.

Looks wicked. Hopefully we'll get it next week.
Never could get into Dr. Mario on the DSi, but maybe with online play it will be more fun. Waiting for the Review
Puzzle games are great fun when you've just spent lot of time playing a shooter or a game with loads of action, so I'll probably be getting this if it's a reasonable price, for when I'm having a break from splatting friends!
Good idea! Maybe when I am done with Splatoon I will pick this up!
@pherret022 It works for me, so I suggest giving the idea a try.
At 0:02, are those Yarn Yoshi amiibos on the top shelf?
Sure looks like it.
@MikeW I think so, but the title gets in the way.
Looks great! Hopefully Nintendo will offer a discount for those who have Dr Luigi!
I bet we will get it for E3 although I would be happy with it coming sooner. I want it. I don't really play on my Wii U. That's more my son's thing plus the gamepad is busted so this would be perfect for me.
Will get this on my Japanese system, I love the Dr Mario franchise
Ooo I love the DSiWare version, but I'd like to get a native 3DS version so I can play it and get SPs on the bus.
Dr. Mario amiibo support not coming I'm guessing.
Looks cool and all but it seems like a missed opportunity by not featuring the Dr. Mario amiibo in some shape or form. I'll probably still get it though.
The last Dr. Mario gane i played was for the gameboy. Plus ihope this comes to 3ds this year, i love dr mario games, they're the best type of games and i am glad to see Dr.Luigi on the 3ds too.
@MikeW yes they are yarn yoshi's. I kept spamming the play pause button and i can say that its true, blue and green and the green on has the pill.
im am so picking this up when it gets released.
This will probably be available after the Digital Event or sometime during E3 in the west. It's Mario's 30th anniversary after all. This game along with Mario Maker and the new Mario & Sonic will all take part of the Digital Event in celebration of Mario's 30th anniversary.
I say we'll get it after the E3 presentation. :/ But online multiplayer sounds amazing.
At last! I love Dr. Mario, particularly Online RX, and I actually bought a DSi solely because of Dr. Mario Express. It's about time the 3DS got a version to call it's own, and this one looks packed with features! I'll definitely be getting it the instant it's available in the US!
Another game to remind us why a unified platform (not necessarily hardware, but development tools, API, etc.) would have made the 3DS and Wii U game libraries so much stronger.
The NX and whatever console hardware buddy it gets later will be benefitting from that scenario fortunately. (Whatever the NX is. I'm just guessing it's the 3DS successor).
Missed opportunity here. Should have called it Dr. Mario Bros.
@SanderEvers
Um cool. But who will buy at $700 each and how long will battery last if it has to run a PS4, a display, and physical drive? :/
@JJtheTexan agreed
If this is anything like Dr. Luigi I'll give this a pass.
another dr. mario? i suppose it was inevitable.
I literally just picked up Dr. Mario 64 yesterday. It looks great in S-Video and I'm pretty addicted to it. I forgot how great the game is. It won't be leaving my N64 for a while. I might pick this up if it comes to the west soon.
I don't understand Japanese either, but I'm guessing the "two players using the same system" thing is actually just a mode where you play on the top screen and see your opponents progress on the bottom screen.
I'm really glad I waited on getting Dr. Luigi; I like to have puzzle games on handheld. I'm mostly excited to play Germ Buster without partaking in mandatory brain-training first!
@ThomasBW84
FYI: I downloaded this on my Japanese 3DS and when I streetpassed with my North American 3DS, it said I had recently played Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure. So, English title confirmed?
