Gunman Clive was one of those fun little games that had all the right ingredients of a success. A creative and interesting art style, tight gameplay inspired by classic side scroller games such as Mega Man, plenty of replayability, and a cheap price point helped it to stand out from the pack and gain a following. Its successor, Gunman Clive 2, was the epitome of a properly done sequel; surpassing its predecessor in every way possible by building upon the solid foundation that had been laid. The popularity of these two games begs the question, though: will it ever become a trilogy? According to the series creator, Bertil Hörberg, it definitely could be.
Fellow Nintendo news site, Nintendojo, recently conducted an interview with Bertil on the Gunman Clive games and his plans for the future as a developer. Naturally, the discussion eventually fell on sequel plans and he had this to say:
I don't know; it won't be any time soon but I'm not against the idea of another sequel in the future. If I do create a Gunman Clive 3 or continue the series even further I think I will shake up the formula a bit more and do something a bit different. GC2 started as a very straightforward sequel with basically just more levels. I think it grew to be a bit more ambitious than that in the end, but it still follows the first game very closely in terms of the core gameplay and structure. Honestly I don't really know where to go from here thematically; in GC2 I tried to make everything feel grander and more dramatic. He's already been to space and traveled around the world, fought dinosaurs and giant robots, so I don't know how I'd top that to make his next adventure feel like a clear step up again.
It may be quite awhile before we see another Gunman Clive, but nonetheless, at least the door is being left open. Plus, if there ever is to be a Gunman Clive 3, it sounds as if it'll go in a unique direction. Meanwhile, Wii U fans have reason to be hopeful, too, as Bertil mentioned that a Wii U port might happen:
My plan was to start with the platforms the first game was on (iOS, Android & Steam), as I want everyone who played that to be able to get the sequel, and then move on to Wii U and possibly other consoles. But we'll see how many versions I'm able to do before I want to move on to a new game, so I'm not promising anything definite yet. The 3DS version made up for the vast majority of the total sales for GC1, but I don't feel I can disregard the other platforms after one game, and it shouldn't be too much work to port it. As I mentioned though, I haven't gotten very far yet and it's going pretty slowly still.
It makes sense that ports would be made first for the original platforms, but here's to hoping that it'll eventually make the transition to HD.
What would you like to see out of a Gunman Clive 3? Would you like to play either of the originals on your Wii U? Share your thoughts in the comments below..

A Wiiu port of Gunman Clive?I would totally buy that in an instant!
Would be great to see on Wii U for those that want it. Still need to pick up Gunman Clive 2. And a bunch of other games. And finish the ones I got over the past few months........ Yeah... Smash Bros sorta took over what little gaming time I have.
Hi everyone! I'm new here... well sort of. I've been following nintendolife for years now, but decided (finally) to join its community. I am looking forward to the discussions I am sure we will all have.
On topic, I loved both Gunman Clive 1 and 2 and admire the developer for his accomplishments. I would buy a Gunman Clive 3 in an instant if one came to be. Speaking of mixing things up, it would be interesting if he did a similar thing to what image&form are doing with their Steamworld series (another gaming gem), keeping the style but experimenting with genres. I will likely support this developer regardless.
@SpriteMaster Welcome aboard, SpriteMaster, good to have ya! To be honest, I've never actually played either of these, but I'd like to one of these days to see what all the fuss is about.
@EvisceratorX Thankyou
Gunman clive 1 & 2 on the same package on the wii u, for 5$
I would buy it.
Wii U port = ...eh, wouldn't mind a Wii U port. I wouldn't want it, personally, since I already have it on my 3DS.
Gunman Clive 3 = Please do. While GC2 is a good game, it doesn't top the predecessor for me for some of its gimmicks (CURSE YOU STAGES 10 AND 22!!), it felt way too challenging than it needed to be at many times (even on the Easy difficulty level I still kept getting the boot), and even with its new ideas here and there, it felt like a rehash (though I still like the game and I will always consider it good in my book). I am hoping GC3 will somehow shake things up (like...branching paths to different levels and bosses? I don't know...) to freshen up the GC formula.
@SpriteMaster Welcome to Nintendolife, and I also agree, a 3rd one would be swell
Three make me go weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!
@SpriteMaster Welcome aboard and nice first comment. I'll like your point with what Image and Form did with the Steam World game. Most would think with the success of Dig we would get a sequel but they went in another direction which is fine by me. Too many sequels in both movies and games today. Sometimes all we need is one stand alone games that says it all.
@Spoony_Tech @SheldonRandoms Thanks for the warm welcome.
It would make more sense to release the trilogy on WiiU, imo. For the third chapter, I'd say make it longer, with a story that changes and develop according to the player, choosing different levels and whatnot. That will add replayability to the title.
I loved Gunman Clive 1 it had a lot of diversity in each level trying new things.
I though Gunman Clive 2 was ok... it should be called Antigravity Gunman 2 because it felt like that was about half the levels... I wish he would have made it more diverse like the first game and mixed things up. The 3D sections where you rode or flew stuff was also a little annoying because of the controls.
Both are good games though and will buy the 3rd one.
I'm don't think a wiiU port is a good idea. this game is fun, but short. a good way to waste some time. great as a portable game! WiiU? well, it'd get some off screen use, but is more appropriate on a handheld.
if it were released on the wiiU, I wouldn't buy it unless it was an expanded $20 value game.
I would buy gunman clive 3 on the 3DS in an instant!
This may look sweet on a TV screen. I would support it, or of course a sequel.
On 2 I liked the 'vehicle' stages and Bob gave it a new twist.
I will purchase again if it comes to Vita
I just beat Gunman Clive 2. That final boss was really difficult for me. Anyway, a part three would be cool.
These games are amazing! I would to see what he could do if abig studio backed a game from him.
@EvisceratorX Well in the first one and yes this is a spoiler so if u dislike spoilers then stop reading but you could play as a duck so it added some challenge trying to beat the level without being able to attack and the fact it was a good idea/concept atleast for its style.
@SpriteMaster Welcome to the team of nintendolife muhahahaha and with more chatters it should be helpful in some way i think.
@edgedino
That character is also in the second one and even makes sense storywise.
A trilogy would be nice.
I prefer HD home console versions instead of 3D portables. So yes, any good 3DS game that gets a polished Wii U port is gonna get my support.
I´d love to see both games combined for a more fitting (bigger) home console experience though.
i'd like to see a third game come out and then an HD trilogy pack for WiiU
I'd buy it again for Wii U. Really great game!
