As per normal on a Wednesday the Media Create charts in Japan have emerged, with this week's results bringing a few new releases and a subtle shift in the hardware battle in Nintendo's homeland.
To start with software, Atlus RPG Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker has made its début at number one, holding off Ubisoft's Far Cry 4 on PS4. Yo-kai Watch 2 continues to accumulate solid sales along with a host of other evergreen 3DS releases, though the updated Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy+ from Bandai Namco had a particularly underwhelming release with just 5,851 sales. As for Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, it's still in the top 10 but not setting the chart alight - the results are below, with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [3DS] Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker – 53,264 (New)
- [PS4] Far Cry 4 – 36,239 (New)
- [PS3] Tales of Zestiria – 29,487 (370,377)
- [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 2: Shinuchi – 27,566 (2,431,812)
- [3DS] Yowamushi Pedal: Ashita he no High Cadence – 20,510 (New)
- [PS3] Far Cry 4 – 18,366 (New)
- [3DS] Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire – 14,108 (2,488,766)
- [Wii U] Kirby and the Rainbow Curse – 12,867 (45,005)
- [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate – 10,832 (2,451,205)
- [PS4] Bladestorm: Nightmare – 10,219 (New)
- [3DS] Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS – 8,878 (2,131,311)
- [PS3] Bladestorm: Nightmare – 7,621 (New)

- [Wii U] Super Smash Bros. for Wii U – 6,398 (576,112)
- [PS3] Ukiyo no Shishi – 6,184 (New)
- [3DS] Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy+ – 5,851 (New)
- [3DS] Yokai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke – 5,425 (3,093,812)
- [PSV] Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly – 5,319 (New)
- [Wii U] Mario Kart 8 – 5,103 (906,468)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – 4,910 (3,909,169)
Moving onto hardware, the New Nintendo 3DS XL - LL in Japan - remains on top following a small increase, with the smaller New model and older systems also contributing. A bump in PS4 sales - and dip for the Vita - means that Sony's home console claims second place; the Wii U continues to struggle in four figures. The numbers are below, with last week's sales in brackets.
- New Nintendo 3DS LL – 21,880 (20,065)
- PlayStation 4 – 17,392 (13,793)
- PlayStation Vita – 11,871 (14,991)
- New Nintendo 3DS – 7,700 (8,028)
- PlayStation 3 – 7,211 (8,600)
- Wii U – 6,807 (7,088)
- 3DS LL – 3,641 (3,882)
- 3DS – 3,187 (3,287)
- PlayStation Vita TV – 521 (589)
- Xbox One – 222 (259)
Decent results for Nintendo and Atlus this week, all told, while it'll be interesting to see how The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D fares in a couple of week's time - it launches in Japan on 14th February.

well... there is nothing for the Wii u really so they are just going to keep dropping.
Ouch, not a fantastic week for anybody...
I'm not feeling Majora's Mask will do outstanding over in Japan. If it hits 200k I'll be surprised. I'm sure everyone in Japan that wanted to play it has already.
Keep in mind that while the Wii U could do better, the 3DS more than makes up for it. It's not like Iwata has separate bank vaults for handhelds and consoles. All of this is just profit to Nintendo, and it's more than the competitors are making.
@Spoony_Tech Yeah but it's on the 3ds,and that's a handheld you know people in japan love handhelds games.
@midnafanboy Oh yeah!

Even if that off by 100k that's horrible and a new game.
Although I noticed the standard for good sales in Japan seems to be around 200k for a first party game to be outsold by even Europe isn't all that good.
PS4 has 2 games in the Top 20, 1 of which is also on the PS3.
Wii U has 3 games in the Top 20, none of which are also on Wii.
PS4 hardware sales doubles Wii U hardware sales.
It's about more than just the games, or the price, it's about marketing and perception, something Nintendo has not been very good at w/ Wii U. Next gen their home console needs a totally different new name and look of the console and an easy to grasp marketing hook, not "asynchronous gameplay". Based on games and price PS4 should not be crushing Wii U THAT badly in Japan, or worldwide.
3DS is beginning to suffer on sales...
@rjejr It does need a new name but In Japan these things don't matter as they're well informed as to what's new and not. The problem lies with the Japanese higher ups in Nintendo thinking that those names will fly in the west where the average parent isn't well informed or isn't cared to be. Of course we as gamers know this is true.
For their next system they need to go back to their old ways of renaming systems for the west like their first 2 systems.
I hate seeing news of Record Breaker because it reminds of how we're likely to never get it here, or get a digital release at best.
Good going for the game, though.
hm, maybe I should give it another try with the 1st Devil Survivor... didn't really like the game that much after playing fantastic Shin Megami Tensei IV
@LinkSword Is that for Europe? That would be a shame. I have plenty to keep me occupied until the NA release 5.May, but I don't get why this wouldn't be all regions.
Is Record Breaker officially confirmed for NA?
@rishisquid yeah it is but i don't think the etrian odyssey 2 remake has been anounced for localisation
@Spade_the_prinny Thanks, that's good to know. I'm glad Atlus is supporting the 3ds so much. I want Nintendo to buy SEGA so that they will own Atlus too, since Atlus is one of my favorite developers... I can dream, right?
@Spoony_Tech well it is tracking ahead of devil survivors numbers through coming so it should do pretty decent.
@Spade_the_prinny actually it has. Well for the U.S. it has.
@rishisquid its dated for a May 5th release
I'm a bit disappointed dy the WiiU sales, but it's a truth that nothing really interesting is coming out for it right now. I'm pretty sure that when Xenoblade Chronicles X, Zelda WiiU and Splatoon will be released, the sales will raise quite a bit. At least I hope so. Anyway it's nice seeing that the 3DS is going really well, and I hope that can make up for the low WiiU sales.
I so wish Record Breaker would come to Europe, even if only as a digital release...
Will get the first Devil Survivor on eshop as soon as I have the time to play it
@rjejr I think it's also about more people owning a Wii U there already. As far as I remember, almost twice as many Wii Us have been sold there as PS4s, mainly due to the year-plus head start.
Although, if I were to guess, I'd say it's a matter of time before the PS4 catches up. It's certainly not going to be as much of a walk in the park as it's been on the west though.
@ricklongo - "twice as many Wii Us have been sold there as PS4s."
That ratio or proportion seems a bit high to me but there is probably some truth to it. The sad part is there still haven't been all that many Wii U sold in Japan, and it's 2 years into what will probably be a 5 year cycle so w/ all the games out already - MK8, SSBU - you would think Wii U sales would still be o the rise. Maybe i Japan got some of those UK sale prices it would sell?
To those asking, yes Record Breaker is coming out in North America in April and has been available for preorder. It comes with a soundtrack cd in all first print runs.
Really hope we get record breaker in europe and not just digital
@rjejr
A huge problem the Wii U has and Nintendo consoles in general have had since the SNES days is the lack of content to appeals to specific regions. JRPGs are a huge driving force of system sales in Japan, yet Nintendo rarely has any. Sports, fighting games and FPS games are huge in North America, but Nintendo rarely has those. People know the PS4 will get those even if their library is weak at the moment, and also know the Wii U will not get them. In all regions, the U has very limited game releases while it seems that a new game comes out for the PS4 every week (whether it is good/bad). Then the PlayStation itself has a Blu-ray drive which adds to its appeal in Japan. When the PS2 came out, it beat the snot out of the Dreamcast/GC just because it had a DVD. Users felt it was a cheaper alternative than buying a regular DVD player. That gave the PS2 a huge install base even though initial software sales were terrible since a lot of buyers bought about 1 game at most. Likewise the PS3/PS4 is finding a lot of early adopters in the region who want the system due to Blu-ray functionality. Nintendo....doesn't even have a standard DVD player so it can't double as a movie player like every other system. It is something that has become important to Japanese buyers but Nintendo has completely avoided.
[Wii U] Kirby and the Rainbow Curse – 12,867 (45,005) ouch i thought japanese love kirby more than that , o well i guess it should sell more here in NOA
@darthllama - I get PS3 sales being helped by blu ray - I bought my bedroon PS3 in part due to blu ray, mostly Netflix etc though, dumb tv - but most PS4 owners should already have a PS3 or blu ray player by now, so I don't see blu ray as a big reason for PS4 sales. And X1 has blu ray also but that isn't exaclty flying of the shelves in Japan. Sports games and FPS are a huge problem for Wii U though.
@mateq I havent played DS1, so I can't speak for it, but DS2 is an amazing game that you should def pick up sometimes. Its pretty easy by SMT standards (although SMT IV was pathetic by SMT standards mostly because of the "save-anywhere" feature). So much fun
@rjejr
PS4 doesn't have as much benefit of the bluray as did the PS3, but having it still helps. It allows people to trade up models without losing an important feature as well as tempt buyers who didn't hop onto the PS3 bandwagon. So users can look forward to games down the road like Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy, etc and still play their movies. With the XOne it has the functionality, but its a very North American centric system that lacks games that appeal to the region such as RPGs. Many appealing titles it does have can be found on PS3/4. Then factor in the weak marketing and lack of trust in the Microsoft brand in Japan (all 3 consoles have bombed there) and PS4 is by far the safer bet. Region free games, dvd/bluray, Netflix, and their most popular franchises all stick with Sony so the decision is an easy one.

@BioOrpheus Might actually have to resort to this if it doesn't. Thing is, it's only for original 3DS (as of now) and I plan to get a New3DS soon. It'd be so much easier if they just localised the game, but you never know with Atlus games in Europe.
@Jordie Given SEGA's financial troubles, I'd guess even porting to America may not happen as SEGA owns Atlus.
@Grumblevolcano I keep forgetting that they own them. The issues just keep piling up... Maybe I'll just import the DS version then.
@Spoony_Tech "I'm sure everyone in Japan that wanted to play it has already"
You...do know how badly the N64 sold in Japan, right?
@Melkac No clue but I know the Wii sold well and it sits there on the VC.
