Initially teased as a tech demo nearly two years ago and officially announced with a trailer last August, Pokkén Tournament, an arcade fighter featuring playable characters from the Pokémon franchise, has remained a bit of a mystery. Originally thought to be a new Wii U title, it was later revealed that the new fighting game would instead be making its way to Japanese arcades. We now have a better understanding of the game's potential through the reveal of the game's controller and gameplay, and it all looks surprisingly familiar.
Unveiled through a livestream presentation with Pokkén Tournament's producer Katsuhiro Harada, the controls accompanying units won't feature classic arcade sticks and buttons, but instead opt for what looks like a large Super Famicom controller. Featuring a D-Pad and a six button layout that includes L and R triggers on the shoulders, it seems as though the control scheme will be relatively simple, but this odd control choice implies much more than that. It may be pure conjecture at this point, but by designing an arcade input to reflect that of a home console, we can certainly justify crossing our fingers for an eventual release on Wii U.
It's also worth keeping in mind that Bandai Namco, the company heading up production, had a significant hand in the development of the recent Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and the 3DS entry. Not only does this imply that Bandai Namco is comfortable developing a fighter for the home console, but that it is a company that Nintendo trusts with its more profitable franchises.
Beyond looking like an exciting arcade fighter, Pokkén Tournament is set to bring plenty of fan service along with it. Some details confirmed in the stream include:
- Gardevoir, Suicine, and Pikachu to be featured as playable characters
- Emolga, Fenniken, Snivy and Lapras appear as support characters that can be summoned to assist in battle
- Mega Evolutions make an appearance in the form of special attacks
- Controls are designed to be accessible for newcomers to fighting games
- Arcade cabinets will support both local and online multiplayer
Check out the recorded livestream for more details and gameplay footage, then feel free to speculate about a Wii U release in the comments section below.

WHOA! I reeeaaally want this to come to Wii U. Hell, I'd buy this on 3DS too.
Nice. The gameplay details, not that controller. Ugh.
This sounds amazing!
C'mon Ninty. Release it for Wii U. I'll be waiting.
Analogue controller it seems. Makin me drool.
Now how does a pokemon like suicune fight?
It'll be on wii u, they'd be insane not to. It'll be like killer instinct on SNES vs arcades. I mean Mario kart gp is in arcades but then we got mk8
Dying to see more of this.
@Ron_DelVillano
And there is a typo. It is Fennekin, not Fenniken.
Uh, wait, who the hell makes controls for an arcade fighter that uses a D-Pad instead of a fight stick? That's just bizarre. Why no analog controls? Why no stick?

@Quorthon
Probably just one of multiple controllers for newcomers and veterans
This game looks so fun. Nintendo needs to release a home console release for Wii U.
Looks like street fighter but pokemon. I wish they would make a normal pokemon & animal crossing for wii u.
Hope this comes to Wii U but please leave the Amiibo stuff out Nintendo.
The controller is simple, because it's at the arcade. It doesn't make sense why they would put a controller that has a lot of buttons at the arcade, then only some of them are used. I guess there won't be a joy stick and buttons on the actual unit, and it looks like the controller will still have the Nintendo logo on it. I'm pretty sure we'll see this game on Wii U eventually.
Gardevoir is basically all I wanted from Pokkén Tournament. If if comes to Wii U it's a 100% buy.
I question that controller though. It looks a bit TOO simple. Even fighting game players that play on pad use the shoulder buttons sometimes. And in addition, in Japan everybody is used to Arcade Stick setups since everybody plays fighting games in Arcades. By having this entirely new and required control scheme, you might be creating a large barrier of entry for even the Tekken community.
That looks awkwardly similar to CyberConnect2s Fighting game series.
Then again, this is basically what i wished pokemon would be like since, well, forever.
Dream Version:
RPG, every pokemon, this battle system.
That game would need to come on its own HDD
@DarkKirby
"Even fighting game players that play on pad use the shoulder buttons sometimes."
"Featuring a D-Pad and a six button layout that includes L and R triggers on the shoulders,"
Very interesting... can't wait to hear more about this.

Is this coming to the Wii U or not? I'm not getting my hopes up just yet.
Ugh, I hate using regular controllers for fighting games (apart from Smash, of course). Triggers just seem too detached from the rest of the buttons, give me a regular arcade stick layout for this game any day of the week.
It would be an understatement to say that Nintendo and Bamco have good relations these days.
What's with the characters not having any movement momentum? Looks wonky.
I wish the battles in the actual Pokemon games looked this good, u know, where the models actually make contact. Sigh.
reminds me sooooo much of Final Fantasy Dissidia, If this plays anything similar to that or better It's a insta buy
@DarkKirby
This may be the usual Nintendo "appeal to all audiences" routine, which would, potentially, explain the simple controller. Hell, it may actually answer my question as to why they'd avoid an actual fight stick.
The downside there is that it risks making the serious fighting/EVO crowd pass over it too easily, and that audience would be very good for this fighter.
I'm no fan of Pokemon, but I am curious how this would play.
It should have been a Wii U game as well.
I don't understand why Suicune is playable... I mean sure, Suicune is really cool, but why...? So now we know 6 Pokemon are playable (including Blazekin, who wasn't mentioned today). Charizard and Mewtwo have to be locks on the roster too. (They are super-popular and have mega-evolutions. Why wouldn't they be in this game?)
@BigDaddysPizza My only guess is that it's a Version mascot that isn't massive, like those as of Gen III onwards.
Ugliest controller ever?
But this is all very interesting stuff. The fact that Suicune is playable means that basically any 'Mon could be too — it's not just restricted to Fighting-types or bipedals. I'm hoping that Sceptile, Mewtwo, or Garchomp could be playable, but there's many possibilities.
...
I want this game. Put it on Wii U. NOW!!!
Finally, Bandai Namco develops a Pokemon game with the Naruto Ninja storm engine. Nintendo would be insane not to release/publish this on the wii U.
Game looks and plays nice but I'll just stick to my Pokemon fighting in Super Smash Bros. instead. I'm really not a fan of the Naruto/Dragon Ball Z/One Piece 3D fight mechanics.
Wow guys, you don't need that much evidence to prove a console release. Sorry to be blunt but if someone is worried this won't come to Wii U they're.... Stupid.
Will comment opinions later. I wish I wasn't so busy today so I can just enjoy the damn gameplay. I'm more excited for this than Splatoon. That's a lot.
WII U 2015 PLEASE!
I'm more and more confident for a 2016 Wii U release. Every hint points to that.
I've never been a huge Tekken fan; my fighting game preferences have always been King of FIghters, Street Fighter, and later Smash. Still, I'll be all over this is it came out way.
Of course this will come to Wii U. Most fighters, including Tekken, release in Japanese arcades first as a sort of beta test and then they'll iron out the bugs/fix balancing issues for the console port a year later. Expect a 2016 Wii U release. Since this is Pokemon and it's a fighter, the localization process won't take long at all.
Anyways, I like the look of this game a lot. I think Mewtwo, Charizard, and Greninja are all on lock for this game. Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee better be in this game. Would be a disgrace if they weren't. Hariyama would make a great heavyweight.
From a visual standpoint, this looks very nice. Varied animations, cool effects, and some really epic Super Moves.
But the gameplay... worse than I imagined. Apparently, this is very similar to the combat system of the Naruto Ninja Storm games, and that means spam, spam, and infuriating loads of even more spam - and the stream delivers right away.
As for the controller: it's dumb. A fighting game that emphasizes free movement does NOT work with a D-Pad!
I don't know what to think of this, but so far, it's shaping up to be a nice-to-look-at, but terrible-gameplay kind of game. Ugh....
This looks very fun! I can't wait for Nintendo to announce this in Wii U; I'm buying it day one. It looks like they took some elements from the Naruto UNS games and Tekken itself to pull this off, and I'm very happy with the results. At least just from a viewer standpoint.
That's so silly, it's almost cool again. And, ironically, never before came the fights in a Pokemon game so close to that of the TV serial.
Pancham/Pangoro better be in this!
The shape of the controller reminds me of the virtual boy controller a little
Reminds me of Naruto Shippuden! My brother loves that and Pokémon, he would adore this!
This game looks better than what I expected. Hope to see it soon on the Wii U as this seems to fit perfectly on it. And we still need a decent Pokémon game on our home consoles
Controller looks absolutely horrible.
@Squid
I wouldn't say it's ugly, just bland and somewhat archaic by today's standards. Ugly would be the Jaguar controller. What a beast.
Is that a Nintendo logo in the middle of the controller????
Uuuh! I thought this would be old fashioned fighter, but now I am even more excited.
This strongly reminds me of this Dragon Ball Z 3D fighting game a friend of mine used to own sooo many years ago...I think it was for the PSP? Not a fan of Dragon Ball Z but the 3D fighting mechanic was fun to play.
I didn't know that all the anime fighting games worked this way. The first thing that came to my mind was a simplified DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3, which is great for me because that game's overcomplicatedness kinda ruined it for me. But if this doesn't come to the Wii U but that One Piece game works similar then sign me up
This looks very promising to me and hopefully will come to the wii u, but I am feeling a bit displeased about the controller though.
read on kotaku yesterday but thanks for the picture of the controller, couldn't find a clear picture
@JasonAnArgoNOT64 it would indeed be an inexplicable move from Nintendo not to at least release it as a download.
But releasing a pack, with the physical game, and two fichting sticks... Wii U will sell like crazy.
Nintendo would be insane not o release this game on 3ds and wii u. Also,did anyone Cath that at some point in the video, the text on screen said "New 3ds"?
If it doesn't have a Wii u release then please don't show this game Nintendo!!! With the region lock and all I still thing that games like this will never reach the US. After the Wii u bad sales last years, I don't know why Nintendo chose to do a arcade game of a game everyone will want and worse of all, Japan only. One more reason to buy a Wii u and they throw it away like that. Sometimes I don't know what is Nintendo thinking.
I can't believe that controller!!! It's really ugly!
For everyone complaining about no confirmed Wii U plans, calm down! BN has been this way with Tekken for quite a while.
Tekken 6: started on arcades, came to console a year later.
Tekken Tag 2: started on arcades, came to console a year later.
While Pokémon are the stars, this is still a Tekken game. BN likes to give this series time in arcades before launching it on console. Just be patient, I'd assume mid-late 2016 for the console launch so they can clear the arcades for Tekken 7 before launching that on PS4/XB1.
You know didn't game freak recently say that they're going to announce a new game in the upcoming weeks? Been a while
Would be cool on Wii U, lets hope.
As long as it's not one of those 'quarter-back, forward, forward, kick, kick, punch, quarter forward, duck' kind of games, I will keep an eye on this, even though I will likely never play it since my motorcycle can't drive to Japan. Not enough gas stations across the North Pacific Ocean. ;P
