Earlier this week there was some concern as talk spread of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U causing a critical system error, a problem acknowledged by Nintendo though — crucially — the issue wasn't necessarily directly linked to the new release. Nevertheless, it's been a source of concern, with Nintendo stating that it would investigate the issue.
With that in mind, a new system firmware update has now gone live, taking the Wii U to version 5.3.2 (add an E or U for your region). As you can see below from the official website, it's another stability update.
Changes in system software version 5.3.2E
System stability improvements and other adjustments
We'd be surprised if this wasn't related to the issue that emerged earlier in the week, especially considering its rapid arrival after update 5.3.1. We'll reach out to Nintendo for clarification and update this article accordingly.

Couldn't handle the stability.
"Mama-mia, look at all of the stability!"
They should update the Parental Control app too since you still can't lock the amiibo settings in the Settings. Anyone could just go and erase your amiibo without your consent.
I got this one this morning when setting up my Captain Toad download. Thankfully it was very small so it downloaded in a minute.
It was not in the official website, so I did not submit it to Nintendo Life.
@sinalefa Yeah, it's on the European one, thankfully. My guess - and that's all it is - would be it was dropped suddenly by Nintendo Japan and the regional teams have had to update websites with short notice.
Mm-MMM! That is some TASTY stability! I simply can't get enough!
my little orange light never seems to be off lately!!
Really glad they have these updates!
As soon as the Mario Kart 8 DLC downloaded onto my console back in mid November I lost complete online functionality! Couldn't play MK8 online, Netflix and Amazon Prime wasn't working etc etc.
I was really distraught, and reluctantly moved over to my PS4 for the time being. Thankfully I was able to access and update to 5.3.1 and everything went back to normal.
So more stability is fine with me
@BensonUii - "Anyone could just go and erase your amiibo without your consent."
Is that really easy to do, like accidentally hit the button before you know what you did easy? Now that I actually bought my kids a couple guess I'll have to look into stuff like that. I was already concerned that if the kids scanned them into SSBU, leveled them up for a couple a hours, and then turned off the system w/o somehow getting the data out of the game back into the amiibo that hours of work could be lost. I'm hopeing Nintendo was smart enough to just keep all of that in save files n the system indefintley in case your amiibo gets lost or stolen you can still play w/ it and continue to level it up in SSBU.
How about Wii u themes?
"Stability updates"... is that what they're calling homebrew scanner updates these days? Wii system menu 4.2 and 4.3 added absolutely nothing constructive, they were only designed to lock out homebrew. They were also referred to as something similar to "stability updates." I wouldn't be surprised if this was one of those kinds of updates to the NAND. I feel kind of awkward knowing this kind of thing is not publicly acknowledged...
For example, in the last update (5.3.1), after checking with a utility such as https://panopticlick.eff.org/ it was found that the Wii U web browser and NX driver was stealth updated, with no public acknowledgement. If it added something useful, why hide that? I don't think fixing the MK8 upload error code was related... But I know of something else that is.
@rjejr yes, that can happen.
Is that Red Mushroom toy from McDonald's?
@rjejr
And here I thought you would not buy any amiibo. I wonder if each amiibo has an individual chip and the system records that. I could try that with a friend who has the same amiibo as me (Peach, Link and Samus) to see if any of them work with my amiibo file.
@rjejr I believe you have to scan the amiibo first under under one of the three options in the amiibo settings. In Smash Bros, you have to to a button combination to reset the amiibos progress bacl to start. Just remember when you are done playing, go back out of a smash and you'll get a screen telling you to scan your amiibo again so its progress can be saved to it.
How stable is the Wii U? When Reggie stands on it, his body is more than ready.
These "stability" updates would make the average joe think that the Wii U OS is worse than Windows 9x or even worse... I like full disclosure of what's being shoveled into my system other than the generic term "Stability Update".
Aside from homebrew bombs, what else is in that package? It's rather frustrating about how secretive Nintendo is.
I'm a little worried about playing Smash (haven't touched it in a week) because I don't want that error. What's the frequency of that error?
@UltraLaserTen @sinalefa @creeprtrainer52 @rjejr
Interestingly, I left my 5yo kid playing Smash U with his Fox amiibo for like 20 minutes. When I get back and tried to scan his amiibo, it said the data in the amiibo is corrupted. He probably scanned it in a hurry while it's still reading/writing. I was worried for a minute if it was perma-damaged. After the 3rd scan, the game asked me if I want to revert/restore to the previous saved data on the system (or game). Thankfully the amiibo is back up working again although it probably lost some levels. I'm not sure what could have happened if the game was closed before I found out it was corrupted. I will try it next time if it happens again.
More stability! Yay...
No idea why but my Wii U menu now loads a LOT faster since this patch :S. Maybe it fixed an issue that slowed down the Wii U menu?
It might be related to some early patch I needed because my Gamepad had to be sent off to Nintendo because of dead pixels.
@sinalefa all NFC chips have a different serial number. You can install NFC reader software with an android phone and see the data.
@BensonUii
If you move the amiibo away while it's writing, it'll instantly go to "corrupted data." It needs to be held steady until it's done writing.
Hey Nintendo can you fix the Wii U Browser so Youtube videos don't max out at 720p? This issue has existed for a year now.
What happened with mine is there was a special golden pants notification Mii that showed up in my Wara Wara Plaza. When I went to click on it and explore it further, it indicated I needed a system update.
Don't know if this is related as I've never seen a mii like that in my plaza before.
Is this error code related to lag in SSB? The last several times I've tried to play online the game suffers from intolerable lag. I'm not talking about frame drops; I mean I can see the battle commence, including the epic stomping of my arse, frame by frame by frame!
The Wii U does stability so hard, that you say "I've never seen this much stability!" And then Nintendo's all like "Check THIS out!" And then BOOM, more stability!
@TheHumbleFellow Too true.
Since I've made this update, I cannot access eShop. Anyone having same problem?
@ungibbed: "These "stability" updates would make the average joe think that the Wii U OS is worse than Windows 9x or even worse... " Thanks for that! That's funny!
@Ootfan98: I'll check it out. Edit: I got to the scrolling part of the e-Shop, where you wait for it to load, I was on this screen only a second, or 2 before I was told to update to continue. I updated, which didn't take more than maybe 1, & 1/2 minutes, then after my system reset(rebooted), I tried, & was able to successfully access the e-Shop. Now, I'm not sure if that was an localized to e-Shop update, or WU system update, but I believe it was the system update in this article.
The Wii U is so stable, it became my second Wii Balance Board.
@Capt_N Thanks for your feedback. I keep getting error code 111-1007 mostly, but sometimes get error codes 105-4207, 111-9001. Everything else in the house works fine. Never had this Issue before
@BensonUii - Thanks for that, it's good to know.
@King47 Great idea kind of bored of that on screen ( TV ) look.
Yeah, I guess this has to do with the bug.
Supposedly, an smashboards user who claims he has a friend working at nintendo mentions that this updates should prevent the error code 160, but not fix them, but they are still looking if the error can be fixed.
Wonder if that is true, but nintendo SHOULD say it specifically if its true. Many people are cancelling orders or holding off buying the game because of this error, and just silently patching it wont relieve them.
This certainly did not fix 160-0105 (the code you get if you run into the Smash error with files on your external drive).
@ungibbed does it really matter if you know? I mean... What would you do, not use your system any longer? strange... Also, do people no longer read their EULA/TOS? Weird... Really weird.
@Quorthon ignore last post... As it was I tended for the person above you... My tablet is trippin' these days...
@sinalefa - And here I thought you would not buy any amiibo."
Well if you can start playing all those demos it seemed only fair.
@UltraLaserTen - "go back out of a smash and you'll get a screen telling you to scan your amiibo again so its progress can be saved to it."
Thats very good to read. Looks like they've given this some thought.
My Wii U has honestly never been so stable in its whole life.
@Iggly Hooray!
@Quorthon The frequency is extremely low. Remember, it's not just Super Smash Bros but other games as well. Rest assured buddy and go play some SSB.
