Super Smash Bros. is chaotic at the best of times, and the Wii U version certainly continues the trend. Fast paced and colourful, keeping track of the action while stringing together attacks and dodges can be a tiring business, and silly mistakes happen. Everyone's done it — we self destruct.
These self-inflicted kills can be the result of the wrong move at the wrong time, attempting a forward special — for example — and plummeting over the edge. The most embarrassing moments come, however, when you inexplicably run over the edge and fall to your doom; as we said, the brain can get frazzled.
It even happens to pretty skilful competitive players, as the video below shows — thanks, Kotaku — from an early December tournament. 'Guy' plays as Duck Hunt and edges the first round; yet as his opponent shoots into the distance to their doom he simply loses focus and runs off the stage, dying before his rival. It's bonkers, and the frustration continues in the second bout as Guy then looks set to win before being pipped again. If it wasn't for the first round's madness, there would have been a decider.
The self destruct in question is around three minutes in, but the video as a whole is a pretty entertaining watch.

Loser's Finals doesn't really make me feel any better.
Ouch, that's never a good time to think you have the win in the bag, only to find yourself on the losing side thanks to making such an error. XD
Of course competitve players SD too. What's newsworthy about that exactly?
Right? I mean, Kirby's up special happens so fast, you pratically scream when you miss the edge and plummet down... X(
That's so hilarious....
Haha.. Lmao.
hahahaha is awesome when everybody went WHAAAA?!
MD/VA's finest.
These guys could bop me any day of the week though.
I've done something similar when I lose track of myself on screen during big matches
I agree with what others said. Slow news day perhaps?
I'm...starting to wonder about you guys...
I had something similar to this happen when playing with a friend of mine on the 3DS version just the other day, and both of us were cracking up so much. I saved the replay. Video is better, but I'll try to describe it.
We were both down to our last life, and he launched me high into the air. Enough that I was in the exit animation, where my fighter was slowly spinning away into the distance. After launching me, his Luigi fell forward (his victory move). However, he was on a moving platform that quickly zoomed off the screen to the left. Luigi couldn't move, and because he reached the side of the screen before I officially disappeared from the screen, the game gave me the victory.
How is this newsworthy? Everybody SD in smash. This is nothing new.
i mostly self-destruct because a) i lose track of my fighter and b) stupid things like not reacting in time to recover or space out
cough Ike cough
I really hope that counts as a Win for Pit.
It's no wonder self-destructs happen. The whole fight progression is a lot messier than necessary, and even the countdown words at the start prevent most people from seeing the starting position. Add to that the convoluted mess of Classic Mode (very "Classic", Sakurai) that is inescapable, and self-destructs are getting far more usual than they should.
That's pretty funny. I've seen plenty of competitive players SD but never like that.
Nice to see Pinkfresh still smashing. He played some mean Lucas back in Brawl!
Epic fail.
On for glory 1v1, if someone i'm facing accidentally falls off at a low percent, I'll sd to make it even if we both had 2 stocks. Also, i found a move accidentally. I was using Ganon and spamming his side b and grabbed the foe in mid-air off the platform. It has the same effect as bowsersuicide before the nerf!
@PvtOttobot Not if you're careful. In a lot of instances, Quick Draw is a better recovery for Ike than Aether.
Yikes, that's just embarrassing. But I get it, we all have brain farts sometimes.
@Giygas_95 Oh trust me I know, I rarely use aether, but some times it's necessary. What I've died from most is using aether within ledge grab distance, but falling due to facing away from the stage! Ike doesn't grab from aether unless you quickly tap towards the stage pre aether.
I SD constantly...mainly from stupid/silly mistakes. Or when I'm Bowser/Kirby and I feel like trolling, lol
Little Mac is still king for the best SD.
@PvtOttobot Or you can be a badass and use aether in the ledge when your opponent goes after it.That will make them go straight down, cause the move is a spike it's great and very rewarding.I did it many times but not against Mario characters cause that fludd they have is Ike's worst nightmare.
Competitive players aren't perfect. How is this news again?

I'm aware of what the article is referring to (accidentally dying from your own stupid mistake), but technical SD's, the real stat that Smash records, very rarely ever happens anymore because the game, for some odd reason, gives a killing point to the last opponent who touched you, regardless of when it happened and what transpired between the opponent's hit and your death.
Ex: Mario hits Luigi. Both are on the ground. Luigi gets hit by a stage hazard, on his own ten seconds later because he was standing in the wrong place at the wrong time, and dies. A Kill point is then awarded to Mario. This happens in both Sm4sh and Brawl, but not Melee (don't remember about 64).
Unless they fixed this in a patch. Last time I tested it was when the Wii U version first came out. Same thing with 3DS. I still love Smash, but Melee is still the only game worth playing in a competitive manner and that was half of the fun.
Its more humorous than actual news, but definitely worth watching. This is why I never run off stage after I beat someone, because losing the match I just won makes no sense.
Good Guy, Guy haha, I watched this live and this is still hilarious.
@PvtOttobot Yeah, that happens to me sometimes. Just gotta make sure you face that stage first!
My most hilarious SD so far:
Online stock match with friends, everyone is down to one life and well above 100%. I get a beetle item, throw it and basically went "yup, case closed, i won" only to realise that you can just hit that stupid thing mid flight to turn it around (i didnt know that) so, the beetle turns around and casually picks me up and carries me off the stage....while i sat there in silence, contemplating life....
This did make me feel better
Feel sorry for the guy failing like that in a competition though.
It could be an accident or it could be a failed showboating. I vote choice 2. I've experienced more of the latter from my opponents (and maybe once myself) in that same scenario locally.
I've never seen this happen....funny stuff.
I also realize that I suck at this series. I suck....but I love playing it anyways.
Smash on!
Just gonna say, these guys aren't big. They weren't big in Brawl or Melee, and this is a small vgbootcamp competition, so take the word 'pro' with a grain of salt.
@TeeJay Same here.
Duck Hunt dog is one of those really annoying projectile spammy characters anyway!
I was playing in a captain falcon ditto and I didn't realize that I was the darker shaded one (we were the same color) and I ran off the right side of the stage which was the side I started on. So you can probably understand why I assumed that I was the one on the left (that is also usually where first player starts in 1v1).
I self-destruct the most as Zelda. Her Up-B is great for combat and keep-away, but it isn't always that great at recovery, especially since she can't move very well during the helpless state after. It is very easy to miss the edge and plummet because you are facing backwards and can't move to the left or right. She's been my second most played character. Not all that great in Brawl, but in this game, her specials are good against really melee based characters like Little Mac and Bowser and really projectile based characters. Her aerials are also really strong.
