We've little doubt that a number of gamers in North America are already mastering the intricacies of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, while plenty are surely training up their favourite amiibo to accompany them.
Of course, those that consider themselves to be serious players will question just how good the amiibo can get. Based on an example doing the rounds online, these little figures can certainly learn enough to take their masters to school.
Some players in Richmond, British Columbia hosted a tournament to see who was the best player in the area, and someone entered their Fox amiibo. The players taking part likely thought they'd easily best the figure's AI, but it actually set about winning some matches, eventually reaching the loser's final and finishing third. It's a good illustration of how much these amiibo characters can learn and improve in the title.
You can see it giving an unfortunate player a hard time in the video below, at around the 1 hour 21 minute mark.
While it seems unlikely that amiibo will ever conquer the best players out there, it's good to see that they can master some key mechanics. Our own Martin Watts has observed that he's still surprised at what his amiibo's learning; you can check out his guide to getting the most out of your amiibo in Smash Bros., if you want the lowdown on how they can be used in the game.

Fear the wrath of the amiibos.
This is surprising. I would have thought it wouldn't even be eligible for entry at all. I wonder if anyone'll host an amiibo-only tournament?
Never underestimate an amiibo, let alone a Fox one.
If I'm not mistaken, an Amiibo also develops stat growth akin to equipping custom equipment. I don't know if these factor in when customizations are disabled or not, but if they do then the Amiibo may have had an unfair statistical advantage.
At the Nintendo area in the mall the level 50 Fox and level 46 Samus was giving a few guys a run for their money. Those things almost never misx grabning back onto a ledge and dealing some damage immefiately after landing. My 2 sons were very happy to beat ghe pair in a 2 on 2 team battle. Guy working there even gave them SSBU buttons which theyllbe wearing proudly on their 3DS bags.
So yeah, they can put up a fight and play against humans, though Im not sure how much better they are than level 9 CPU. My kid says unequically level 9 CPU are harder.
@WalupeachyTime - Gottacatchemall. Of course there will be amiibo tournaments. It will be the warm-up to main events, like midget wrestling back in the 80s.
I still need to pick up myself an Amiibo so I can train him to be a lean, mean, smashing machine!
No items, Fox amiibo only, Final Destination.
Wait,wait,wait!Amiibos can join tournaments?!
this article is kind of late, other sites reported it days ago. i hate to say my lvl 30 pikachu beat me a few times. they get pretty good. also the cruel smash miis are incredibly cruel. i think u have to KO just 1 to get duck hunt and i tried everything. i think they were a lot less difficult in previous games.
This has completely restored my faith in amiibo's intelligence levels.
@Bulbousaur All items,Fox Only,Final destination, 8 player smash.
Even with a custom Link, I have a hard time beating my Link amiibo sometimes haha. It's pretty fun to fight with them when they are a high level.
Things i wished for in the next generation of gaming (being PS4, Xbone):
What did we get ?
Nintendo waddles by unnoticed and creates a toy figure that can best tournament aces due to a self teaching/learning AI.
@rjejr Then whoever trained those amiibo did a terrible job of training them. I've trained 3 amiibo to 50 and I can tell you that my beasty level 50 Mario is by far better than any level 9 CPU. I can barely manage to kill him twice before he kills me 10 times and I can beat multiple level 9s that are teamed against me.
Yeah, they can get pretty tough to beat. My Mario is at level 50 and is a smashing force to be reckoned with, and my level 48 Kirby has definitely gotten better.
Wow that Fox play more aggressively than my Kirby. Granted my Kirby is a good fighter (hate to admit it), it's just more of the cautious type. I wonder if it have to do with stats distribution or learning to adapt to the opponent play style. Maybe both?
But...can they even lift?
@Iggly
I can already see a black market emerging- betting on Amiibos like racehorses.
All capped of at Lv50, then hosting Amiibo-only tournaments. $50 on Super Kong! $100 on Mega Marth! Guy in a visor with a cigar and a currency counter taking bets behind the glass
Every time it loses, it only grows stronger.
Everyone is surprised, lol...the thing's AI evolves and gets even tougher on other Wii U's/with other Amiibo. Even when its level is maxed out.
And of course I can't skip ahead to watch it, because...you know...Twitch is silly and screws up with loading the video. >_>
At least the Little Mac Amiibo isn't out yet.
@Xiao_Pai Twitch is not good!
This is going to sell some amiibos. The curiosity alone.
Amiibo tournaments (or Amiibo brackets in Smash tournaments) are an inevitability at this point. People are seeing that the A.I. is actually pretty intelligent. No match for top-level human players, of course, but still pretty darn impressive for little Skylander things.
I love how stunned the announcer sounds when he's reporting on the Amiibo taking players out.
Here's a youtube video of the Amiibo's big performance:

@blackbeltbap
I got Dunk Hunt unlocked with Link. Go under the platform to the left right away do a not fully charged up smash then roll through the mii to your right and you should be able to boomerang then running Smash them. After that it changed up too much but that first part seemed consistent and you should get the hang of it. Took me about five tries.
I always let my Villager amiibo win. I am afraid it will kill me in my sleep if I beat it.
i gave my yoshi a "start with super scope" thing by accident. he's gotten WAY too good with that thing, even throws it at me as soon as it's empty x.x
