When the New Nintendo 3DS launched in Japan recently one of the more interesting new elements was the web browser, which came with a filter to block adult content from the eyes of innocent and impressionable youngsters.
To remove the filter, you have to register a credit card — which incurs a small charge — to lift the restriction, the logic being that kids don't usually have a wallet full of plastic and therefore wouldn't be able to remove the block.
Our friends over at Vooks have gotten their hands on the Australian New 3DS — which hits stores this week — and can confirm that the filter isn't present in that region.
This could be something that is unique to Australia, but we'd be willing to bet that the filter will also be absent when the system hits North America and Europe.

Good. I wasn't going to pay for this. Then again, I never use the 3DS browser.
It would make sense that it might of been required by Japanese law.
Does the australian one also contain Flip note, and does it support the dutch langauge
Vooks got early review hardware. I'll be picking mine up in 26 hours (at the official launch time), so if anyone has questions I'll be happy to answer them then.
Why must you tease me with the Black New 3DS when it's not even coming to Australia on release OTL.
um.... to my understanding... you can still look for porn just with google on the 3DS so their filter was pretty garbage if there is one.... I didn't think there was.
Really considering importing one from Australia. Being based in the UK, it should be good to go. Already found a site that will import for £130 including postage. My only fear is that they will release a beautiful purple special when Majoras mask is released and I would have to, obviously, purchase it immediately...
I'm not surprised since no one would pay for the unlock tbh.
Good, now we just need some more porn that works with the 3D on the 3ds.
That's nice 'n all, but Australia also doesn't get the black N3DS, for some reason.
@SetupDisk I could tell you some of them, but better not here... >_>
@G0dlike Oo! Which site?
@FritzFrapp that was my understanding!
Not that I use the Internet Browser anyway, I guess that's good.
Less than a day to go now, looking forward to finally getting my hands on mine.
@cfgk24 fishpond.com.au
Thank you G0dlike! That is much cheaper than Playasia.com
@mr12calvin Flipnote Studio 3D is an eShop app that remains Japan-exclusive to this day, and releasing the New Nintendo 3DS will not affect that. If the app were to be available, it would have been available for ALL Nintendo 3DS owners anyway.
Any Nintendo hardware released in Australia is technically completely identical to any Nintendo hardware released in Europe. This is why games bought in either regions are cross-compatible, and both regions share the same eShop and Nintendo Network servers. If you happen to buy a console from Australia, and change its country settings to the Netherlands, it will work as normally as any console bought locally (language settings to Dutch should be there as well). The only real difference between buying from Europe and Australia is the packaging, where the console serial codes and Club Nintendo PINs are not cross-region compatible unfortunately. You might also have problems with the official customer service support in that department if need be, as your Australian-console would legally be an 'import', despite compatibility.
Getting the Australian model from play asia, but I'd rather use my smart phone if I 'needed' that sort of content.
@HopeNForever
Ah, thank you for thar much information!
But uhm, what exactly do you mean with the difference where the console serial and club nintendo pins are not region compatible?
Will I not be able to login with my europese nintendo ID and link my eshop account?
You will not get any club nintendo stars or pins or poins with new 3ds anyway (nowhere :/)
Will I still be able to transfer date from europese 3ds xl to australian new 3ds xl? (should prolly b possible cuz they're both pal)
How does it work - cuz you cant put your old sd card in your new one)
Why would I watch porn on my 3ds web browser? I have a phone and laptop if I really need to jerk it on the go.
@DrMonk
Can you test to see if a 64Gb SDXC will work?
@DrMonk well then just wanted to ask whether you prefer the new 3ds or new 3ds xl. If you do get the new 3ds xl I suggest the metallic blue color.
I don't know if Nintendo realized a default on child filter you have to pay to disable was a horrible idea or if Australia's default laws restricting access to and censoring video games are so heavy handed already it was deemed pointless.
Wii-U's HTML5 web browser is light-years better than the current 3DS. For the record I carry an old flip phone with no data plan and texting disabled. Sometimes when I'm on the go, I'll log onto a wifi hotspot with my 3DS and check my email, NLife, forum posts, etc. Half the time images do not load at all or worse the entire page blanks out with a "page too large to display" error. Watch 3D videos over HTML5? Yes please! The current Youtube app does not support 3D video at all even though they promised an update to support 3D long ago.
The 30c to permanently unlock the Internet filter is totally worth it IMHO, even though I believe Nintendo is being an asinine crybaby for requiring this step. Dang Nintendo; grow a pair already! Parents can and should lock access to or enable content filters on the Internet Browser for their child's 3DS. It's not Nintendo's job to be my "parents"; I'm 33 years old so I can view whatever the poopoocockadoodledoo I want. And what I do with my Wii-U/3DS is nobody's business but my own...
Just a few hours now...
@Kaine_Morrison Nintendo's support FAQ for the new 3DS (live on the Nintendo Australia site) outright states the SDXC format cards are not supported. It lists a few microSD and microSDHC cards that they've tested as being compatible.
@FritzFrapp lol, I'm from Australia and I approve this comment :>
@mr12calvin so right off the bat, it supports all the European languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portugese and Russian).
Interestingly it has a shorter but thicker stylus (talking about new XL compared to old).
@smashbrawler It is very comfortable to hold, even compared to the old XL. Smooth all around the edges. D-pad and circle pad moved up slightly which feels great in my hands. I only held a new 3DS (small) briefly, so can't really compare to that. That did seem small compared to the XL though, which is what I'm used to... but I do have big hands.
The touch screen feels more sensitive to finger touch (more like the Wii U... maybe even better).
All European and Oceania countries can be selected during setup.
Needed to do a very quick system update on the new 3DS before transferring (my old one was already up to date).
New 3D is great!
3ds would be the last thing i used. although it will get a lot faster..
@mr12calvin You would be able to login the same Nintendo Network ID account you have just fine on the new console if you successfully did the System Transfer correctly in the System Settings, and the new console will also be able to read all the games and save files you have on your SD card, even if you transferred all data from a regular SD card to a Micro one, as long as you managed the System Transfer to the new console.
By the way, I just learned from someone that apparently the New Nintendo 3DS cannot be registered on Club Nintendo, either manually (like on older consoles) or digitally (like on the Wii U). I don't know if the situation would be different in the European release, but for now people cannot register the console on Club Nintendo anyway, not in Australia or Japan.
I would not trust Fishpond. Take a look at these opinions:

@DrMonk so does the american one come with the filter?
