3DS System Update 9.0.0-20 Is Now Live with Home Menu Themes

Can't wait to see what they do with The music player on the New 3ds!

Selection is a little weak right now, unless you only care about Mario, but I assume there will be much more in the future. Picked up the Zelda one for now. $2 is a decent price point. I imagine most people who do digital shopping on their 3DS have 2 bucks laying around on their account balance anyway, and it's cheap enough to entice impulse buying.

The 3DS eShop now also shares musical themes with the WiiU eShop.

I hope they produce lots of themes. It would be great to have themes for games like Mario Kart, Mario Galaxy, Smash, etc. I'd personally like a koopaling theme, but they probably won't do that (unless they really are going to make a ton of themes lol).

When I went to update my 3DS, at the very end it says "An error has occurred while updating. Now restarting system." I even put it near my wireless router. Help?

EDIT: I did it twice and still no go.

I got the hanafuda theme. The music is really nice, and the theme fits my gold 3DS XL pretty well. I might also get the isabelle one when they release it.

I went with the Mario: Wood-Burned. I liked the rustic look of wood and the way Mario looks in the circle reminds me of Super Mario All-Stars.

So with the new 3ds, is the screen a little bit bigger than the original 3ds? I have an xl now but the face plates are swaying me towards the new standard and if the screen is a little bit bigger than great!

Here's hoping they can let you link your NNID to your friend code soon. They add themes but still haven't gotten the basic friend & messaging capabilities to host a round of online multiplayer without other means of communication. Still, I love that new UI. Looks far more contemporary.

Here are my initial thoughts...

Cool! Themes! Let's have a look... hmm... no default green option, that's a shame...

Let's have a look at the downloadable ones, hmm... that Zelda one looks nice, let's watch a Youtube video of it... ugh! The way they've stitched the ends of the image together with that blur is super ugly, love the icons though.

How about the jumping Mario one... boring, would rather wait for a theme that really grabs my attention.

Wonder if they'll include theme codes with boxed games, that would be great!

Let's check out the eShop... not much new here and they still haven't improved the Watchlist! Wish I could re-arrange my list and have sub folders for it... maybe next time.

Can someone please explain to me the usefulness of sharing a picture of your Home Screen?

Hopefully it's just the start and that in-game screen shots will be possible in the future.

I got the zelda theme last night, then I went to bed. When I woke, I realized that I dreamt that more themes were available. One of the ones in my dream was a Kagura Burst. The background was just panties and boobs floating by. Weird, right? It seemed so real though. Each folder was a boob. I really need more sleep.

Got the wooden Mario theme, kinda disappointed that actually it's not the Super Mario Sunshine acapella theme, but a revision instead. Now I'm waiting for stuff from Marvelous (Senran Kagura), WayForward (Shantae, Mighty games), Arc System Works (more BlazBlue, Guilty Gear?), and Nintendo (Metroid, Kid Icarus, F-Zero, SPLATOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!).

Got the red theme for my red 3DS XL. The black is so awesome, I made it the theme for my brother's 3DS.

I like the addition of the systems icon in the home menu icon. Right there accessible on the screen all the time, yet hidden so no ugly spanner staring at me and no searching through folders. neat!

Downloaded the Zelda one, although it's poor in comparison to the level of stability my 3ds has reached now. I think it can handle even more stability. I think it may even be more stable than N. Korea now and that's saying something lol

I won't be paying for any themes. $2 is a lot for what is just a glorified wallpaper.

Picked up the Zelda one with the $2 I had in my account, it looks AMAZING.

Awesome update. The system stability is really noticeable this time. Scrolling through the home menu and loading pages on the eShop is much faster now - the home menu doesn't lag anymore, and actually gets faster as you scroll.

Went with the black theme for now, will buy one later.

@FritzFrapp agree on the free ones being pretty 'lame', it wouldn't be so lame if you could choose the colour for folders independently and if they gave us green as an option

I like the idea of themes. Xbox Live has had themes for years now. However, I never purchased a theme there and I can't see myself buying a lot of themes on my Nintendo systems also. The one thing on Live that companies took advantage of is free advertising. I remember downloading the free Gears of War 2 themes a couple months before the game released, so that every time I fired my system up, it was staring at me reminding me that it was coming out soon.

The Hanafuda theme is glorious! I would imagine the Mario and Zelda music is a bit too loud and upbeat for a home screen, but the Hanafuda music is catchy and relaxed. And it's very pretty.

Seriously, I love this idea, and hope a lot of developers get on board making themes.

Not sure why everyone is excited about the installed themes. They're pretty ugly. I like the default look of the home screen, but the other colors just don't seem to work. I don't think they did a good enough job trying to make the colors blend well.

Also, I think part of my problem is that I have my home screen zoomed out 3x, so the icons just look weird at that level when it comes to the colored themes. I thought I'd like the black, but the contrast between the letters on the folders and the color of the theme is just too much.

I got the Classic NES Mario theme. It's pretty cool. I'm hoping they add more themes, especially from series like Star Fox, Fire Emblem, and Kirby.

I downloaded the classic Super Mario Bros theme to my 3DS. I'm not a big fan of the folder design, but I really dig how the SMB theme begins each time I click the Home button.

I'm definitely intrigued and will probably be getting more themes soon (I'm thinking A Link Between Worlds is what I'll get next).

I am hoping for a Mario Kart theme to be released in the near future.

I got the Luigi theme! And when you select your game or app on the home menu, with the Mario themes, a coin sound goes off!

I can't find the themes on the eShop. Are they coming with the Thursday update here in the US?

I like the LBW theme, but it kinda sucks we can't choose different songs. If more Zelda themes come to the Theme Shop, I'll get whichever one uses the Fairy Fountain theme. There's something about it that fits with selecting things from a menu...

Went with the Zelda theme. Figured it was worth the $2 for the menu music. Kind of disappointed that the background doesn't look nicer and I can't control which part of the panorama appears on the first page, since I only use the first page yet the panorama looks nicer on the second page. I wish there were a Little Mac theme.

Zelda theme ftw! I also like that the icons are slightly smaller — makes it easier to keep track of things now.

I was excited to get the Zelda one of my Golden Triforce 3DS... but I think is kinda ugly :/
I think I'll get a generic one. Black, maybe.

It didn't even cross my mind, but of course they'll charge sales tax on these themes. I feel like everything is twice the price it should be (99 cents plus tax for polka dots?), so for now I'm sticking with Free Blue.

I hope they get some 3rd party themes in there, and also do it for the Wii U. I'd like a 3DS theme for The Keep and Bayonetta 2 for the Wii U.

Picked up the 8 bit jumping Mario. Seems to fit my old school gamer image and my black launch 3DS. I like the background music and NES-style sounds.

I'm sure they'll bring themes to Wii U eventually. Of course, Wii U just got folders... But still, I bet this comes in a Wii U update sometime after Smash Bros. releases. January 2015 at the latest.

@Quorthon Pretty sure Japan showed some Monster Hunter themes. I'll bet we get those with the release of Monster Hunter 4 stateside. Also, in 2015 I bet we start seeing these as Club Nintendo rewards.

Now that folders look like old school "?" boxes, I'm more inclined to use them despite the 1-letter descriptions on them.

These would be perfect as Club Nintendo rewards.

Awesome update. I'm hoping for a Sonic or Mega Man theme in the future, since Azure Striker Gunvolt and Monster Hunter got ones. (Though, I think they're Japan-exclusive for now.)

In any case, when the blue Rosalina and blue Gunvolt themes come out, I'll definitely get those.

Would have been nice to have had a few different themes pre installed.

What I'd like to see is the ability for users to create their own themes and upload them for others to download and rate. Like what you could do on the old DS with a mod card installed. There are a lot of talented artists out there.
However I know this would most definitely not happen as I'm sure Nintendo will want full control & censorship over what themes are available.

I got the Spotlight: Luigi theme and I am really liking it. I love the small touches like the coin sound playing when you launch an app and the warp pipe effect playing when you open the system at the menu. I do think it is interesting how many of these these themes feature music from games that aren't playable on 3DS: the Mario, Luigi, Peach and Yoshi Spotlight themes all use the "Rainbow Park" theme from Super Mario 3D World, while the felt and wood Mario themes both use Mario Sunshine's "Secret Level" theme. Probably doesn't mean anything, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless.

I'll mess around with the free themes later. The only theme I want to get is the Azure Gunvolt theme. Not sure when it's coming out though.

The Theme shop, another great idea from Nintendo to drain people's purses! I rather had they made a new Metroid!!

On a side-note: The black theme (wich came for free) looks awesome. And that's the one I am using now.

no green???!!!?!?! thumbs down. why cant you just include more colors nintendo? leaving out green is a huge let down for me. I almost went with black, but it makes everything look strange. maybe try getting all the basic colors before releasing next time.
