It's that time, North America, for the latest Nintendo Download Update with the details of new goodies available this week. There's a high-profile retail title on 3DS along with an assortment of new download-only titles on both current systems; there's some welcome retro Zelda and more besides, too. All of the details are below.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update earlier this week? Turn that frown upside down, the details are right here.
Wii U eShop
1001 Spikes (Nicalis, $10.01 / $10.01CAD) — Released earlier this week, this is a fiendishly challenging platformer in which you have to grab a key and make it to the exit as the difficulty ramps up. This Wii U version features competitive and co-operative multiplayer; we'll bring you a review soon.
Chubbins (Dahku Creations, $5.99 / $6.50CAD) — Originally a smart device game, this is a title in which you're continually 'bouncing' and your job is to guide your hero to safety or, occasionally, see off a boss character. Despite some basic visuals and low-budget aspects, we were relatively impressed with the level design and compulsive nature of the play in our Chubbins review.
I've Got To Run! (4 Corner Games, $1.99 / $2.19CAD) — This is the developer's début and offers three endless runner modes to tackle, each with slight differences in move-sets. It runs at a smooth 60fps with some fairly basic visuals, and serves its purpose well; nevertheless, how addictive the experience can be is questionable despite its budget price, as we explain in our I've Got To Run review.
Wii U Virtual Console
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (Nintendo, $7.99 / $7.99CAD) — The Game Boy Advance collection on the home console continues with this charming Capcom-developed Zelda adventure. This quest sees Link shrink down to tiny proportions and 'wear' a rather unique hat; we'll have a look for a fresh review, but in the meantime you can always check out our The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap review from the 3DS ambassador promotion release.
Wii U Retail Download
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Little Orbit, $39.99 / $43.39CAD) — Available from 10th June.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Just Dance 2014 (Ubisoft, $24.99 / $24.99CAD until 9th June, normally $49.99)
Just Dance Kids 2014 (Ubisoft, $14.99 / $14.99CAD until 9th June, normally $29.99)
Just Dance 4 (Ubisoft, $24.99 / $24.99CAD until 9th June, normally $49.99)
3DS eShop
1001 Spikes (Nicalis, $10.01 / $10.01CAD) — As per the Wii U release above, though this version trades in on-the-go convenience with an absence of multiplayer modes. We'll review this iteration separately.
Color Zen (Cypronia, $3.99 / $3.99CAD) — After a fairly impressive showing on the Wii U eShop, this soothing and aesthetically pleasing puzzle title makes its way to the portable. It's a formula that we enjoyed after a long day at work in our Wii U eShop Color Zen review, and we'll see how well it stands up on 3DS.
3DS Retail Download
Tomodachi Life (Nintendo, $39.99) — Available from 6th June. This is sometimes, somewhat inaccurately, compared to Nintendo's 3DS blockbuster of summer 2013, Animal Crossing: New Leaf; yet in reality it is rather different. This Mii-sim is a particularly quirky experience, as you prompt and observe all-manner of peculiar scenarios and games unfold, and is ideally suited to short bursts of play. It's certainly unique, and we'll bring you our review soon.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Little Orbit, $29.99 / $32.49CAD) — Available from 10th June.
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars (Atlus, $29.99 / $29.99CAD until 9th June, normally $39.99 — some DLC also discounted)
Bit Boy!! ARCADE (Bplus, $4.80 / $4.99CAD until 26th June, normally $7.99)
Riding Stables 3D (Treva Entertainment, $6.99 / $6.99CAD until 25th June, normally $19.99 / $19.99CAD)
Rising Stables 3D - Jumping for the Team (Treva Entertainment, $4.99 / $4.99CAD until 25th June, normally $29.99 / $29.99CAD)

Not a bad week for people of the right genres.
I think I'll pick up Bit Boy Arcade on sale. It has pretty good reviews.
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap will be mine since I have $10 in eShop credit (thank you Digital Deluxe Promotion~)
...no pier solar? THIS SUCKS! was hopin this week since they said before e3.but ohwell im finaly getting mario kart 8 today...Bestbuy is late this time.Also i might have tried 1001 spikes if it was cheaper.
Wait... why is 1001 spikes $0.01 cheaper on the 3DS?
I am about that Minish Cap life.
i'm seeing the price for 1001 Spike on both the Wii U and 3DS eShop as $10.01 not $15
I already have Minish Cap on 3DS, so nothing for me this week. Nice selection, though.
June 6th!!! I'll have to make some Hazel and Augustus Miis for Tomodachi Life if you know what I mean, right after I decide between retail or download...
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. I have been waiting to play that game for a loooooooong time. Glad it's finally happening.
Ubisoft would probably announce Just Dance 2015 on E3.
I'll check out Color Zen on 3DS and Tomodachi I'm gonna grab retail. Everything else, is a big old no.
I thought Minish Cap would be the next Super Mario Bros. 3. Guess not...
WOOOOO!!! Gonna get a $20 card tonight for Minish Cap and Advance Wars.
Voted for Minish Cap. I didn't even know there is going to be a How to train your Dragon 2 game i thought liscenced animated titles were mostly over
I'm getting Tomodachi Life for sure! I'm going to download it at Midnight so I can play it on a trip I'm going on on Friday!
I got 1001 Spikes earlier this week on Wii U for $10.01 not sure if it is because of a launch day discount or what
@bezerker99 You and me both! MINISH FOREVER!
@DefHalan No, it's because you own another Nicalis game.
$15 for a buggy game? Nice
@AJTsuki
I only hear about that discount for the 3DS version, not the Wii U vversion
I'm not complaining, but like others, the Wii U version has a discount for me as well. If that's an intentional cross-buy discount, then holy crap, that's awesome.
Minish Cap all the way.
MINISH CAP!!! i was so worried this would turn into what happened with SM3 where Japan and Europe would get it and then we'd get it like 3 months later.
@TheBigK Too bad I'm not an ambassador..
I getting the physical version of Tomodachi Life tomorrow and I'm not getting anything from the eshop till after E3 because I keep thinking they my drop something good onto the eshop during E3.
@DefHalan Weird, Nintendo's game page says $15. Are y'all seeing $10.01 for 1001 Spikes today?
My understanding was that the $5 discount was a 3DS-only thing.
I still think that the right price for 1001 Spikes should be $10.01, because that makes it 1001 cents.
But I guess I must be crazy, because I am actually more interested in Chubbins than in that one.
@ Thomas: yes. 1001 Spikes currently listed as $10.01 for WiiU
@Sinalefa: nice eye! i didnt notice that. pretty cool actually
I wonder what is causing the Wii U discount of 1001 Spikes, especially since it didn't say discount on it anywhere lol
Can't really afford anything this week, but eventually I'd like to get 1001 Spikes, Minish Cap and Tomodachi Life.
@sinalefa - "1001 cents"
Nice one.
I was considering Minnish Cap but I still haven't DL WW HD for free yet so I'll save my $8 for now.
Props to Little Orbit for bringing a 3rd party game to Wii U even if it turns out to be licensed shovelware. The first game was less than meh. The new game was actually on the front of Redbox but they only have the Wii version.
I could of sworn that Tomodachi is $34.99 here in the states ... am I wrong?
I'll just look into the conception 2 dlc but besides that nothing for me this week saving my eshop money for any surprise releases during e3
Minish cap... came sooner than expected.........awesome.
Minish Cap for me
Chubbins ftw o3o
@ThomasBW84 Definitely yes. I checked it Tuesday when it came out and it was for sure $10.01. Of course, that could be an error or a launch sale rather than a cross-buy discount, but I've also only heard of the discount for 3DS.
@brokenfang @rjejr
I noticed it when I saw that the game would be $15, then I was thinking about a better price for it and it clicked.
Nice to see Nicalis had enough common sense to do that. I feel $15 is very steep.
Ehhh.... No. Just saving my Eshop cash for the inevitable Mario Kart 8 DLC.
1001 spikes costing the same as child of light feels unconfortable
Give 1001 Spikes a chance. I've been playing for hours and it's difficult but in a sense that makes you feel stupid and not hate the game. it has 4 extra modes and whenever you reach the exit of the level you feel aaamazing. No bugs for me yet and on miiverse i havent read anything about any bug whatsoever
As a 3ds only owner Im starting to get alittle upset on thursdays.
Wii U is always getting theese awsome old VC hand held titles, while im stuck with deciding weather or not to buy Spank your pet animal vol.45.
Its an easy choice BTW.
I'm going with Tomodachi Life, Minish Cap, and 1001 Spikes. Very good week IMO. Except for the lack of 3DS VC support. Looks like after Mega May the 3DS is returning to the one NES game no one cares to re buy a month system.
@tchaten I've only seen that Best Buy (where I'm getting it) seems to be selling Tomodachi Life for $35 and the other places I looked Toys R Us and GameStop are selling it for $40
Edit: I just looked and Toys R Us seems to be selling Tomodachi Life for $35 too.
Minish Cap although I own the GBA, I'll pay the $8 for the convenience. Also, I highly recommend Color Zen if you dont own a WiiU. ( You know who you are!).
@shigulicious Lol, I dont know if thats Shots Fired but I will look into it.
@HeroOfCybertron Well GameStop is notorious for ignoring suggested retail - look at Disney Magical World - a $30 game they are selling new for $35 and used for $30 - crooks
So if 1001 Spikes is $10.01 on the 3DS eShop, can you still get the loyalty discount? Because I'd totally drop 5 beans for the handheld version despite already planning to get the Wii U version.
Tomodachi Life for me~~~!
Perhaps 1001 Spikes if I got cash left over...
What do you guys think?Should I buy all the Pikmin 3 DLC,Minish Cap,or 1001 Spikes?
I would get Tomodachi Life if I didn't buy Mario Kart 8 last week. Plus, I'm still playing Pokemon Y with Fire Emblem waiting in it's case on a shelf. It's a great selection this week though.
I already have minish cap from the ambassador program. I can't say I love it. It isn't terrible, but I haven't had much desire to finish it. Lesson: Making the damsel in distress, the exposition fairy and most of the npc characters all incredibly obnoxious is not good world building. I wish somebody would turn Ezlo to stone too, and this is coming from someone who didn't find Navi annoying. The dungeons are quite clever though.
Tomodachi Life is for me. I have miis ready to add. I have been excited for it since the Nintendo direct and all the previews I have read have made it sound pretty cool. Maybe not as good as Animal Crossing, but I don't see why it has to worry about filling those Graciegrace priced boots when it is so different from Animal Crossing.
I think I'll go with getting Pikmin 3 DLC and get the other games later this week.
@Drobotic
Assuming you like the 3 of 'em, you'll find more value in Minish Cap
Already have Minish Cap for my 3DS.
Goose egg for me. Would have liked to see DD2 at least.
I do agree with @Rafx. It shouldn't be hard to take a rom and add it to Wii U and 3DS at the same time. They still haven't added any of the pokemon games for Gameboy. This is sad, because I want to buy them. I don't care about link cables or trading.
I don't see why they aren't adding a few vc games a week to the Wii U. Earthbound is good and all, but the wii VC library is so incredibly good that it shouldn't take years and a lot of repurchases to get anywhere close. Same goes for 3DS. I enjoyed the VC on the Wii enough that an even better Wii U Vc would make me want a Wii U even more.
Tomodachi Life for me!
@DakotaM47 The next Mario 3 will be Super Mario Kart.
So it seems Minish Cap is going to be my first title for the GBA Virtual Console. Can't complain.
@Drobotic Pikmin 3 DLC is some of my favorite DLC I've ever downloaded. It's essential.
I have to say that I hope against all odds that How to Train Your Dragon 2 is halfway decent. My kids are going to prod me about it either way...
Nothing for 3DS, really. That interests me, anyway.
I see what they did there with that $10.01 price lol
No H2S?
is 1001 spikes on sale?? Supposed to be 15, no?
"1001 Spikes (Nicalis, $10.01)"
Huh? 10.01? Why would they...
...Oh! That's clever.
Might get Minish Cap, got distracted and never finished it on the 3DS...ao, yeah. lol
Nothing for me I am still plugging away at Mega Man V on the 3DS.
Nothing for me this week. My copy of MK8 is arriving today finally ( ^_^)/
@XCWarrior
Nintendo Life gave Bit Boy Arcade a 4 out 10 and the game is being stomped into the ground on Metacritic. Save your money for next week.
http://www.metacritic.com/game/3ds/bit-boy!!-arcade
Nothing for me. I'm waiting for S&tPC. Though I will check out Bit Boy, or whatever it is.
Off-topic: People who were wondering about Mega Man V's price; I meant to say this when it released, but it is probably b/c the rom, unless otherwise removed from said rom, has/had Super Gameboy enhancements, specifically a border, & some colors.
Great to see we got Minish Cap. However, seeing as I have a backlog of games (especially virtual console) and still having a blast with MK8, I don't see myself picking it up for some time. Just glad I know it's on there now, so I can add it to my wishlist!
Aw cool, I've been waiting for conception to go on sale. Looks like I got something for me this week after all!
Would've rather of had Minish Cap (one of the few Zelda games I've missed out on personally) on 3DS personally, (especially sense I don't have a WiiU) but I can't help, but think Nintendo's only bringing GBA to WiiU, and not 3DS, just to encourage old-school gamers to get a WiiU. So it might be unlikely we'll ever get GBA games for 3DS now... (Same for DS games, seeing how they released Brain Age DS for WiiU VC in Japan now.) Kinda odd they're suddenly releasing portable games on a TV console, when after so many years of keeping Gameboy games off the Wii, and such.
@Beau_Skunk What's stopping you from getting the cheap console WiiU then?
So no more Mega Man for a while?
Unless I'm missing something, you cannot use the loyalty discount to get 1001 Spikes for $5.01 on the 3DS right now. Oh, well. I guess that will kick in once it goes to full price?
@ThomasBW84
bit boy!! arcade is actually $4.99, not $4.80, as u have listed above. just in case u wanted to know.
Downloaded BitBoy. What a nice surprise. Its all platforming Maze with wonder full music and Graphics. Thanks Berndt for the wonderful retro meets next gen platformed which really takes me back to the days of the Atari Jaguar. Not a everything was bad on the Jagaur BTW. Great game @Berndt played it for a couple hours today. Thank you for such a high quality game at a great price point
I wish I had waited for the Conception sale to get it. Oh well.
The review for Color Zen got me interested in it.
@Porky
Don't have enough cash to afford one. Even the WiiU being "cheap" compared to the competition doesn't mean it's cheap enough for people like me.
