From late 2013 and into 2014 Nintendo's best titles on Wii U and 3DS have picked up some notable awards, with landmark releases such as Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds leading the way. The latter has triumphed again at the Game Developers Choice Awards, which are part of this week's GDC (Game Developers Conference) event.
A Link Between Worlds grabbed the Best Handheld / Mobile Game Award, seeing off competition from smart device titles DEVICE 6 and Ridiculous Fishing, PS Vita's Tearaway and fellow 3DS title Fire Emblem: Awakening. Some other games on Nintendo hardware were also nominated in categories or obtained an 'Honorable Mention' — details are below.
Game of the Year
Super Mario 3D World (Nomination)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Honorable Mention)
Best Audio
Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Honorable Mention)
Best Downloadable Game
SteamWorld Dig (Honorable Mention)
Best Design
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Nomination)
Pokémon X & Y (Honorable Mention)
SteamWorld Dig (Honorable Mention)
Best Handheld / Mobile Game
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Winner)
Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Honorable Mention)
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (Honorable Mention)
SteamWorld Dig (Honorable Mention)
Best Narrative
Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale (Honorable Mention)
Best Visual Art
The Wonderful 101 (Honorable Mention)
Though there was only one winner on Nintendo hardware, there were certainly some thoroughly respectable nominations and mentions. SteamWorld Dig certainly made an impact, while we're particularly pleased to see the art style of The Wonderful 101 get some recognition.

Nice!
The Stanley Parable really should have won something. It had 4 nominations and 2 honorable mentions. Definitely a must-play game
A Link Between Worlds could have been so much better if they actually put some difficulty into the Dungeons and bosses.
Maybe they did in the Hero quest but I have played the game now so I will never get that enjoyment properly due to knowing the story).
W101 is the perfect wiiu game. A massively underated and underappreciated game on a massively underated and underappreciated system.
Link Between Worlds made me care about Zelda again. I lost faith in the Zelda franchise, but this game was so awesome and it deserves it.
I got the club Nintendo posters two days ago and I love them, they are much better than what I expected.
Good for Zelda. I still haven't got the game yet.
Deserved.
(While raising a glass of Lon Lon Ranch milk) "A TOAST!!! To what is arguably, not one of the best, but THE BEST video game series of all time! TO ZELDA, LINK, AND GANONDORF!!!! And may God grant us many more years of Miyamoto, Aonuma, and Kondo..... CHEERS!"
@King47 I felt the same way after Spirit Tracks and Skyward Sword. Both of those games turned me off the Zelda franchise, and I kinda ignored A Link Between Worlds for several months as a result.
But for me, A Link between Worlds more than made up for my disappointment with Spirit Tracks and Skyward Sword. It reminded me of why I loved Zelda in the first place, with a fun overworld to explore, enjoyable dungeons, and a game that did not feel the need to hold your hand with helpers pointing out the obvious("Master, your hearts have fallen drastically. Please replenish them immediately" when the game is beeping at you and Link is limping)
For me, A Link Between Worlds is what Zelda should be, and I hope the next console one takes some cues from it. I also loved the changes they tossed in, like the ability to rent items and the ability to tackle dungeons in virtually any order(A throwback to the first Zelda on the NES)
I recently got this game, and I'm loving every second of it. Such a great game, and it made me a fan of Zelda again!
A well-deserved award for this great installment in a fantastuc series. I wish Super Mario 3D World would have also won, but you can't win them all.
Another great selection of nominations and winners to go with last week's BAFTAs. Nice to see Attack of the Friday Monsters get a mention.
Nice to see mobile games not win as they are no where near on the same level. Nice to see Dark Moon in there too.
At least it wasn't VITAaway...
Wait, FIRE EMBLEM AWAKENING WASN'T NOMINATED?!
@unrandomsam I'm not gonna disagree with you there! The dungeons, while cleverly designed, were so easy. I wish they would have either been longer or required a bit more thinking power. Hero mode is quite difficult though. You take twice the damage of the normal mode. I died a lot.
Sadly still waiting on my ALBW poster set. The suspense is killing me. I guess waiting makes the prize better.
Awesome The Legend of Zelda : A Link Between Worlds was such a great game I should know I beat it. It was quite enjoyable and the game ending was also pretty good. I think it deserved the award it got. Overall this was also the first Zelda in quite some time that gave me sort of a rush of excitement when playing it. Best portable Zelda that’s for sure. Note - Ocarina of time 3D does not count either since it started as a console game.
I've said it before, i'll say it again; awards mean nothing. why should i care about anyone's opinion but my own? I think ALBW is a god-awful game, why should i care what other people think?
Honestly, I truly think that ALBW is highly overrated. It's a good game, and I enjoyed it when i got it for Christmas but I just didn't have the "omg this game is so amazing!" feeling when I was playing. I'm playing Ocarina of Time right now for the first time and I'm having a lot more fun.
Well deserved.
bah! Luigi's Mansion 2 destroys ALBW in every aspect!! ALBW is easily most forgettable Zelda game Ive ever played.
