While there's been plenty of information and footage for LEGO City: Undercover on Wii U, the open-world title that offers a potential blend of block-based madness and GTA, all has been silent on the announced 3DS equivalent. Nintendo's now confirmed that 3DS isn't getting a stripped back equivalent, but a prequel — LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins.
The game only had a rather cursory mention in the press release from Nintendo, confirming a release date of 21st April in North America, while it was stated that as a prequel it'll focus on the exploits of the main character, Chase McCain, as a rookie cop. Potentially due to pressures of development, this prequel is rather peculiarly being released after the Wii U game, which is currently down for release in North America on 18th March.
After many stripped back iterations of home console LEGO games on Nintendo handhelds, what do you think of the decision to offer a prequel instead of a customised port? Are you pleased to get a different story? Let us know what you think in the comments below, and we'll keep an eye out for further information.

Argh damn, wanted to get this but since im getting Fire Emblem (after a LONG wait) in April and will already be playing Monster Hunter since March, this will have to wait!!
Long as it isn't like the other Lego games on 3DS,I might go for it when the price goes down.
probably getting this. i like that we are getting a prequel instead of just a port of the Wii U game
This probably means the Wii U version will be delayed.
I like this idea better since I don't have a Wii U. It won't be stripped down now!
Looks like getting both is an even better option now.
@Barbiegurl777 This is nothing like the licensed LEGO games. I have no interest in those but this should be awesome.
I may buy this one as well as the WiiU version if they are different enough
Sweet! I'm glad its a different storyline I'll get it if its an open-world game & not a "restricted" version like previous LEGO games were.
I hope this has an open-world too.
Oh my. I have to choose between the Wii U and 3DS version, although I'll probably only end up with it for the Wii U.
I kind of wanted to see the reviews of both before I made my mind up on which to get, but I was already leaning towards the Wii U version so maybe I'll end up with two great games.
Great that a prequel is coming to the 3DS but I have my eyes set for the Wii U version.
Wii U version for sure, but I share some oh the other commentors scepticism on the handheld lego games. I will await reviews for that and gauge my interest from them.
As long as it's as good as the Wii U version. If the console version is still much better, who cares if it has different levels.
Thas simply awesome! I don't like ports so it's very good news as for me. 3DS don't need any ports.
Well If the versions were the same I'd get the Wii U one, but as they are different I may get both!
Good. Hopefully they both turn out great.
@THENAMESNORM Ditto
Cool, though my family (Including me) is looking more forward to the Wii U version. I can't wait for this one!
I hope Lego City Undercover is around that date for the UK I've been looking forward to this game... (Wii U version) Until then only 11 days till Scribblenauts Unlimited xD
I buy all the portable Lego games. I'll be getting this eventually.
Well, I think I may have to get this. Depends on playstyle and ratings.
If there is no sandbox open world play I wont be getting it.
Nice surprise. 3DS is really set to dominate again in 2013 with so many games!
@Barbiegurl777 Believe me, this game will be way different from the others, plus lego game have been awesome since lego batman 2. I'm actually looking forward to the wii U version of lego marvel the avengers as well.
I'm still on the fence about the game until we get a little more info. The good news is it will have its own story and won't be a stripped down port of the Wii U game. If it's not a full realized open world game I may not get it though, the 3DS is powerful enough to handle a game like that (PSP had two fully realized GTA games) so I hope the developers go all out.
I like the idea of having a prequel over have a stripped back, horribly rehashed portable edition. It's something fresh that nobody has experienced yet if they have played the Wii U game and the people who own a 3DS and a Wii U will see the complete story unfold. I hope that the flow from " the chase begins" to the Wii U is smooth and makes sense and it still feels like the same game in a way if that makes sense to anyone.
@MYNISTA It has
want it!!!! I've pre-ordered. Someone who no if it's possible to drive a helicopter in the 3ds version?
