July has arrived, and we don't know about you but we're still blasting away with the likes of XCOM 2, BioShock and Borderlands Legendary Collections from the end of May. Add to that June's Clubhouse Games and Burnout Paradise and it looks like our bloated backlog isn't going anywhere soon.
However, there are a couple of big releases coming in July that we'll need to clear our slate for. The first is a Switch-exclusive return of a cult favourite from SWERY, and the second is the latest adventure for Mario and co. in paper form. Add to that Catherine: Full Body and Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town and there's plenty to be getting on with this summer.
It has to be said, though, that August is looking a little empty right now. Nintendo is playing its cards very close to its chest regarding upcoming releases, apparently preferring to surprise us with imminent drops (as per the recent Paper Mario announcement). While August is looking a little Dry Dry Deserted at the moment, we're hoping for something unexpected (or not so unexpected) to pop up over the coming weeks.
Let's have a look at some of the biggest games coming to Switch in July and August, shall we?

The Wonderful 101: Remastered - 3rd July
Hold up, this again? Yes, it seems that the physical release of The Wonderful 101: Remastered has slipped ever-so-slightly into July. As digital owners will have known for a while now, this is the glorious return of this previously Wii U exclusive following a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign from developer PlatinumGames.
If you missed out on The Wonderful 101 first time round, this is the perfect way to catch up. Of course, if you're happy to forgo a little physical cartridge you could be playing the game right this second!
Check out our Wonderful 101: Remastered review for the Nintendo Life verdict.
Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise - 10th July
A Switch exclusive, this survival horror sequel to the 10-year-old original (which arrived on Nintendo's console just last year in its Origins guise) is hotly anticipated by fans of famed Japanese developer SWERY's cult original. We say 'sequel', but it's a prequel, too, as you head to the town of Le Carré to uncover clues and solve a surreal murder mystery.
And if the spooky story all gets a bit too much, you can chill the beans right down with some bowling or skateboarding - in fact, the latter is a great way to get around town. As you might expect given this game's heritage, you'd do well to expect the unexpected with this one, and we're intrigued to find out more.
Paper Mario: The Origami King - 17th July
Who needs Nintendo Directs, huh? This game's existence had been rumoured, but it wasn't revealed until the middle of May. From everything we've seen so far, it's shaping up to be a beautiful entry in the Paper Mario series and is supposedly taking a leaf from the books of the beloved older N64 and GameCube entries.
We'll be finding out how this one unfolds very soon. Until then, we'll keep looking at the gorgeous screenshots.
No Straight Roads - 25th August
Sneaking in at the end of August is Sold Out and Metronomik's No Straight Roads, a musical action-adventure romp that sees players fighting their way through a vibrant world using rhythm-infused combat.
It's directed by Wan Hazmer and Daim Dziauddin, lead designer on Final Fantasy XV and concept artist on Street Fighter V respectively. With exclusive touchscreen support, an Assist Mode and 3-player local co-op, the Switch version of this multiplatform title is shaping up to be a fine one and we can't wait to get our hands on it.
More Awesome Nintendo Switch Games
Aside from the highlighted games above, there are lots more Switch retail games which might take your fancy in July and beyond.
Awesome Accessories For Your Switch
And finally here are a selection of the finest Switch accessories coming up in July and beyond, for your consideration.
So that's it for July and August - did we miss anything? Let us know with a comment and also tell us if you've pre-ordered any of these goodies!

Just Catherine: Full Body, Paper Mario and maybe Aokana for me out of these probably. Been a reasonably quiet year so for buying games for me so far as expected which has been great for my bank account and backlog.
Really looking forward to Paper Mario but I'm also really looking forward to know what comes after it
Come on Nintendo, announce at least something (new)
Oooh...!
My Universe:My Baby ?! 😀😀😀
Imagine Babyz is reborn as different title. 😁
@Anti-Matter Only game that matters to me
Paper mario. The origami king
Streets of rage 4
nothing here for me. Not really anything at all on the horizon for Switch, so I guess I have quite a while to work on my backlog.
I wish Nintendo would get their act together
Just Paper Mario but still playing games I bought in late May. By the time I clear all of that and the few backlog games I have from before May, it'll probably be September.
Still it would be very good to know Nintendo Switch has games after July 17th so it would be nice to have more announcements.
Nothing super excited about. Will see how Paper Mario is like but I still have to finish the first 2 games in the series, despite no connections.
Guess it’s time to hunt the backlogs; although I believe there’s a Japanese release of Air Missions Hind for Switch that is multi-language; May pick that up.
If you're looking to buy Streets of Rage 4 you're better off buying it at base.com for £29 than via the provided Amazon link.
Nintendo Tax the games are priced to high it's like £40 a pop.
I love nintendo but the games are so high in price compared to other consoles.
Isn't Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered slated for August 20th?
They've gradually chipped away at my apathy towards this game. Time to get my pre-order in.
Not an RPG fan, so nothing on the horizon. Would love a bit of Nintendo news, a new direct would be great. The waiting continues...
Just a FYI you have The Wonderful 101 listed as $60 for NA, but it's actually $40 (MSRP, it's actually cheaper at the moment).
Looking like Wii all over again with the shovelware.
I'll grab Paper Mario and Deadly Premonition 2 for Switch this month. I already have Streets of Rage 4 coming in from Limited run for PS4 Pro and Switch so I'll pick up a physical copy for Xbox One X when it releases. Ghost of Tsushima collector's edition is already pre ordered for PS4 Pro also.
That seems to be it for the month....
The 5 month Switch drought ends with Paper Mario for me.
Wait for reviews on Fairy Tail for Switch. Big fan of the Anime, so if they butchered the graphics to much on Switch, I'll move it to PC.
Indies and 2nd tier stuff like CrossCode I now just check out on PC Game Pass for 5 bucks.
Just Paper Mario for me for the month of July... But preordered from The Game Collection as preorders come with a cute lil origami looking pirahna plant keychain.
Pointless knick-knack xD , but hey ho!
I've had plenty of games to play even with this so called "slow" year. And Animal Crossing isn't even one of them.
Wow slim pickings!
Just Paper Mario and PGA 2K.
Man a very poor list. What is happening to Switch?
Paper Mario for sure and maybe that Cyber Marco adapter for the turbo functionality if a game ever requires button mashing. I was ready to buy a turbo controller for Sunset Riders until I saw the game had a turbo option.
I have preordered Paper Mario: The Origami King. Nothing else on that list seems interesting to me.
Meh. I just want a right joycon from Hori...
I wonder if they will be showing their future lineup after Paper Mario comes out? Seems like a huge hole with nothing announced, but I know they like to come out of nowhere lately. I just want to know about BOTW2 and if I'll even be playing this year or not. Worries me as I imagine it might get delayed with everything that has went down this year.
My backlog is not lacking. But there isn't a whole lot here that specifically appeals to me. Catherine, Aokana and Moero Crystal are all vaguely interesting but now "buy buy buy" at all.
I was interested in Paper Mario, until I saw that trailer. I was hoping for a game more in the line of the Thousand Year Door. A more traditional party based JRPG Paper Mario game...
But it looks like more of a gimmicky mess like Sticker Star.
Dead2y Premonition and Paper Mario for me, this month.
I’m personally surprised there aren’t more people hyped about getting a deadly premonition sequel/prequel exclusive to the Switch.
I suppose SWERY is an acquired taste, though.
Waiting for that Mechanicus, to get some classic grim darkness 40k before GW erases it all away.
Also now I want 40k-inspired Switch accessories.
@JSDude1 Its almost as if there is a global pandemic going on! Oh wait.
@RPGamer Zion will have a July games video up soon 👍🏻
Just Paper Mario for me this month on Switch, only other game i'm getting is the Destroy All Humans remake on PS4, i'm trying to be good and not buy much this year, trying to get a grip on my insane backlog !
@mariomaster96 Nintendo nowadays and "something new" 😂😂😂
Still no word on BOTW 2, Covid-19 is going to kill humanity before they announce a release date, I wish they would just add 4 more Zelda titles while they're milking everyone with old games...
When will Mario 64 for the switch come out?!?!???!?🥺🧐🧐
