Macbeth’s rail locks in Star Fox allow you to access an alternative route and make your way to the True Ending.
Once you reach the train boss at the end of Macbeth - the home of Venom’s army supply base - you’ll be prompted to hit eight switches in order to divert the tracks.
Missing a single rail lock means you fight the boss as normal, taking you to Bolse and locking you into the regular ending. However, if you manage to hit all eight, not only does it open up the way to Area 6 and the true ending, but it ends the boss battle there and then - making it a quicker option to finish the stage.

Macbeth Train Rail Lock Locations
Play Macbeth until you reach the boss encounter, which begins with Peppy telling you to shoot the switches to open the lock. The switches will then be located either side of the central train track the boss is travelling down.
The switch locations, and the side of the tracks they are on, are as follows:

First, go right to hit 1+2.

4 is on the right first, then cross over to the left for 3 straight afterwards.

Stay left for 5, where it’s out in the open.

Go right for 6, where it is behind the shutter doors.

Then left for 7 (it's slightly hidden behind the barrier) then very quickly to the right for 8 on the far side of the screen.
Now shoot the switchboard on the right. You know if you’ve been successful if all the lights are green.
An additional note: it’s possible party members can hit the switches for you. But because of the tight timing for each one, and you only have one opportunity, it’s best to try and hit them all yourself.
With that all done, you should now have access to Area 6, which eventually leads to Venom 2 and the True Ending.
