I started to get this message after downloading and playing the new DIVE demo. The message appears on start up and if I power down and back up again it's gone and everything works fine. I deleted the channel just in case but the problem persists.
I'm concerned if I don't address the problem now it might eventually brick my Wii. I've looked around for ways to fix this myself on other message boards but the only answer I could find was "Send it to Nintendo." I could try formatting the system memory but does that mess up all the downloaded games I have even if they're saved to the SD card? If you send the Wii in do you loose all the stuff you've downloaded?
I've had the system since launch, maybe its just dead. (sniff, sniff)
I've been having that happen for awhile now on at least 2 or 3 things (wiifit, Netflix most of the time lately. I thought I might have had this problem here and there with another or so too). Now most of the time when I get out of Netflix I get that message. I've had to start it in maintenance mode to get back on my wii menu then and go in to news channel so that when I'm out, I'm out of maintenance mode. I have to do the later because I can't do some stuff in maintenance mode.
@Nice-shirt: Are you using a Nintendo SD card? I don't and wander if using a none nintendo SD might be why I get this sometime. Either that or MAYBE something didn't didn't download right.
I'm not using a Nintendo SD card. I'm using a 2GB SanDisk. I've been using the same card since you've been able to use SD cards and have never had a problem with my system before now.
When I downloaded the DIVE demo I also downloaded the Mix Superstar demo. I never played Mix Superstar but I deleted it anyway and I have not seen the error message again after turning the system on and off a few times to test. It's kind of scary to think that I could loose all the games I downloaded over the years. I know I don't technically own them but that I'm leasing the software from Nintendo but it doesn't feel like that.
Yeah you know the funny thing is....I wonder if this didn't start right after I downloaded That poker game that I believe was made by the people who made that music mix game. That makes me wonder if they really WERE the reason this started. (Also I believe mines a scandisk too).
If you DO fix the problem and possibly find out why this happens, I hope you'll let us know.
I got this message the day after I got my wii on launch. It just began to appear more often so I formatted my wii and it hasn't showed up since. Also if you want to format your wii your downloads should still work, but make sure to not delete your wii shop channel data as that will get rid of your downloads.
After deleting the Mix Superstar demo I have not seen this error message again. As far as formatting the Wii and NOT loosing your downloads I don't see how that's possible. I can't back up the Wii shop channel to the SD card and when you go to the format option in the system menu it specifically warns you that "even channels that have been copied to an SD card can't be restored."
I'm just happy the error message is gone. I think I'm done downloading demos.
Long time reader, first time poster. Actually, I just registered for this thread because I have a bit of experience with this problem.
1. If you can restart the system in maintenance mode, you likely had either a message or download that was funky/interrupted and is causing the problem. Maintenance mode prevents some functions from loading on start-up, like the message system, usually the source of the issue.
2. The only way I've been able to find to correct it is to reformat the Wii, but I have read that some found success by erasing all their messages and save data for unused games. Didn't work for me, though, I had to bite the bullet and reformat.
3. The Wii Shop channel is not removed during reformatting, there is a separate process to remove the channel that requires going into the Wii Shop menu (the same place where you link it to a Club Nintendo account). If you do that you are screwed, so DON'T do anything with the Wii Shop Channel. You will be able to re-download any game that you have purchased after reformatting, and all the games saved to SD cards will continue to function. The pain is that you have to copy all of your save files onto the SD card, then after reformatting, start each game (just to title screen usually works), close the game, THEN copy your save game file back to the Wii to regain access to your saves. I have over 100 WiiWare/VC games and ~70 retail titles, so this was not a lot of fun for me.
4. Most if not all games that use Wi-Fi will not allow you to copy their save files, and you will lose them forever. This is a bummer when you start to think about some of those title: Animal Crossing, Endless Ocean, etc. I sounded like the Angry Video Game Nerd on a rant when I realized I was about to lose nearly 1 million in-game credits in Blue World, which took me just short of for-effin'-ever to acquire. I'm getting a little miffed just thinking about it again.
For what it's worth, I never was able to ascertain exactly what event triggered the error message, but it started just after I got Netflix. There was also a system update around the same time. I spent time on the phone with both Netflix and Nintendo, of course both denied that they had ever heard of it happening, but I was able to find a significant number of people with the same experience starting around May-June 2010.

What a coincidence. I have this problem at the moment. Strange thing is that it's ONLY with Wii Fit Plus. I can start up the game and play it, no problem. But when I'm finished with the game and try to return to the Wii Menu have tried removing the Wii Fit Plus save file and start over. But sometime I get the message after closing Wii Fit Plus, and sometimes I don't get it. So weird and frustrating. Someone online told me to pull the power cable out of the Wii for a day or so. I'm currently trying that. So fingers crossed.

Yeah...Thanks #6. Nice info. I may try deleting some things first sometime and see if that works. Also, how did you know that its a download or message problem if you can use maintanence mode?
At the warning nag screen on start up, hold down + and -, then press A (while still keeping + and - depressed). If you do it right a message will pop up that you are in maintenance mode. This will stop the message board from loading, but you can save data to an SD card and access most things. If memory serves it also stops the news and weather channels from working,
@ LongTime, I turned to the people who know the Wii's OS best - hackers/homebrewers. I'm not into modding my game consoles, I have a Ducati to satiate my mod urges, and I like warranties, so my Wii is completely original. Anyway, some time spent on their forums turned up the term "Mail Brick" and the diagnostic method of using Maintenance mode.
So I had the power cable removed from the console for a full day. Plugged it back in and started up Wii Fit Plus and it's working. Really weird. Oh well. Back to the training schedule again.

I seem to get this warning sometimes after power outages. So far, leaving the AC adapter unplugged for a while and then restarting has always worked for me.
The only two times this has happened to me was when playing the wiiware game Max and the Magic Marker a while ago. Plus ive noticed an updated version of Jett Rocket. I could only presume that its the wiiware title that caused the problem. I deleted it and no problems so far.
I have had this issue in my wii for about 3 years, and it only happens after returning from the certain games to wii menu, I think Wii Fit (where this message started showing), Wii Fit Plus, Wii Music, Max & the Magic Marker, Overturn, Frobot and Doc Louis'Punch Out!! . It always shows up since the first use of a game, no old game has ever sudenly suffered this (I think this is why you havent had the error since deleting said games, but its still there and may just show in any new game) but it started to get more frequent, to the point that after rebooting the message would still appear, even after 3 reboots, that was when I freaked out and started looking for a solution and came across this maintenance mode. The last two years I still get this message in said games and about 1 in 10 new games, but using maintenance mode it won appear more than once per reboot and then it works normally, I just learned to live with it, in my country there are no official repair centers, and I refuse to lose my Mii, SSBB, MH3 and MKW saves. As for what may have triggered it, well not sure, but I had an interrupted download before it, I have a launch Wii with an active message board and WiiConect24 since day 1, an inserted 2gb SD since VCA, 100 Miis, 100+ retail games and 100+ WW with their respective save files, and frequent power outages ... the cause could be anything or everything!
