I understand the new black bundle is frowned upon, but I'm looking for the most cost effective way to get a wii & the new super mario brothers game. THe BC issue- so the new black one doesn't play GC games, is it also not compatible with the GC controller?
The red bundle doesn't seem much if any cheaper than buying the new super mario separately with any other console... but I'm not interested in sports or kart. Recommendations?
Do you already have a Wii? If you do, just get the black one w/ NSMBW and the SMG soundtrack. It's smexy. lol

No wii, no system since the original NES actually.
Just having a ridiculous craving for a super mario game. Between such unanimous high praise for galaxy & the new super mario & all the hype about the new Zelda, I'm about to do something stupid! Just don't want to get the wrong one (reading amazon reviews condemning the black w/NSMBW bundle). I don't have a game cube, but I'd like to have the option to plug in a GC controller (or an aftermarket wired battery-less controller if such a thing exists), & would like to know if the new black console w/NSMBW cannot do that either. Or if there's any other negatives aside from not standing vertically & the BC issue I'm overlooking.
Otherwise, it's the right price, looks good, & doesn't come with anything I don't want.
Lack of BC also means can't use GC controllers to play Wii games which supported them either. NSMBW (and DKC Returns, as well) disappointingly do not support the GC controller OR the Classic Controller.

Well now that there's a bundle with both Mario & the new Zelda that's what I'm going with. Not backwards compatible, but the two games I wanted & it supposedly goes on sale for $150 next week. I've alreAdy ordered it- hopefully they price match.
But this means the only controllers I'll be able to use will take batteries- no wired controller options at all now right?

Correct. Your Wii will not only be incapable of using ANY type of GameCube controller, it won't play any GameCube games - period. If you want to play GameCube games, you'll need to buy a GameCube.
