My GP is doing this too. It happened after I played super smash bros brawl, and now it only connects within 1ft.

You've probably tried it already, but have you checked that the sensor bar is properly connected to the back of the console? Also, if there's dirt or something in the space where it connects, it might also cause some troubles (?).

Got nothing to do with this. The sensor bar is just an array of IR lights for Wiimotes to look at. No controller communication of any sort goes between any type of controller to the sensor bar and then to the console itself. All Wii and Wii U controllers wirelessly connect directly to the system itself.

A Wii sensor bar cable only provides power to light up the IR array, which is why there are battery powered wireless sensor bars or why you can even set up candles to substitute for one. A Wii/Wii U doesn't even have a way to know that anything is plugged into the sensor bar port, so it can hardly decide in response to pointlessly reduce the range of a Wii U gamepad just because one isn't properly connected.

Edit: Didn't notice the date of the post until afterwards, but it stands for anyone encountering similar issues that may read through this looking for advice. Don't waste your time worrying about the sensor bar.

That was happening to me too! I decided it was the stupid Wii U pad thing, so I hooked up another controller (The other wii u controller I have) The controller wasn't working but for the first time in 11 months I could play with other people again! I'm so happy

I've had my Wii U for about a year and my gamepad recently did the Same exact thing... Here's what I did to get it working again immediately... All you guys have to do is sync your gamepad to the console again... And boom... It'll work... Hope this info helps...

@Adaseyi You would think that would have been part of Nintendo's trouble shooting advice before asking people to pay for a repair! I will definitely try this if I start to run in to issues.

The message of Error still bumping whenever I try to press Sync button for second time.

I found the answer!

I don't have a cell phone or other devices around, so I knew that wasn't the issue. I finally came across this video on how to replace the Wifi card in the Wii U GamePad. (Search "My**REAL** fix for Wiiu gamepad range issues" or 3P5CHVWI9Uw on YouTube.) These chips are available through eBay or Amazon for much less (time and money) than it would cost to ship your gamepad off to Nintendo to fix it for you.

From the comments in both places, this seems to have done the trick for a lot of people. Good luck!

@minecrafter You could, you know... explain what's wrong with it? Or make a new topic instead of necroing one that's only tangetally relevant?

Mine would work for a bit then disconnect. Blew out all air intakes and fan area with a can of air, and now it works fine. Think it was getting too hot from built up dust inside.

This same thing has been happening to us for about 9 months, but I was reluctant to call Nintendo after seeing comments about how much it would charge. I was considering venturing off to buy a different gaming system for my kids for Christmas this year. However, as we were trying to watch Netflix tonight through the WiiU, we were having issues with the game pad making funny sounds and not letting me type in the password. I gave up and decided to call Nintendo (the phone number was actually on the back of the game pad).

After waiting a good 5-10 minutes on hold, I got through. They had me troubleshoot (disconnect all wires from console and turn off game pad, plug in all wires and try to re-sync) yet my game pad kept saying it was losing connection. The lady offered to have me return it to get fixed for the bargain price of $99.99. I asked what my other options were since they are no longer making many games, and I asked if she would give me a discount on a Switch. She then offered to drop the fee to fix my game pad down to $50. I told her I would pay $50 as that would buy me time to consider new gaming systems for Christmas 2019, and she then voluntarily dropped it down to $40. So, who knows if this will solve the problem in the long run, but it is better than the prices I saw mentioned in this strand, and she said I would get it back within 2-3 weeks, in time for Christmas.

My gamepad was displaying the error discussed in this thread. The console's red power light blinked and the top of the console got quite hot each time. I noticed the fan didn't spin when I powered up.

I took the Wii U apart, snugged the fan's cable to the logic board and it started spinning. I've had no connection failures since.

I don't know what went wrong--wild guess is that someone dropped it and was afraid to tell me--but I'm glad the fix cost me nothing. A local repair guy gifted me the requisite tri-blade screwdriver.

@Super_Gravy Good gravy that's short range lol. Mine has about a 15 meter or 45 foot range, closer to 10 meters or 30 foot range if there's a wall or two between my gamepad and the console.

The original topic has long since concluded, so i'm going to lock this.

I made Sheldon & Mr. Randoms back on Flipnote Hatena, now i'm a kangaroo mod that has a funko pop collection!

I'm not keen politics since that stuff is spooky, I'd rather watch SpongeBob over Fox News anyways!
