I recently purchased both and it's my first time playing them in years. I have to say, Super Mario 3 for the NES is much better than Super Mario World. Main reason I think this is so is because it's so much more challenging. Super Mario World is the first of many Mario games that is made way too easy. To be fair, I purchased the Game Boy Advanced version, which might be slightly different than the SNES but it's way too easy. By the second world, I already had like 20 1UPS.
I think Super Mario 3 was ahead of its time and so well put together.
Plus, the Koopa Kids look awful in Super Mario World and nothing like what they looked like in the instruction manual. The color schemes are way off. They looked so much better in the NES game despite graphical limitations.
Super Mario World. The hidden keyholes and Star Road, and YOU ARE A SUPER PLAYER!!
Yeah, SMW FTW.
SMB3 was awesome too, though. So many great memories with both.

"The player can also save half-way through a level once the player has passed the half-way gate and quit. When the player comes back to that level, the player will start from the half-way gate and it is not affected by playing another level after doing this process."
"Players now start out with the power up they last had, instead of Small Mario or Small Luigi."
"When the player gets hurt with Cape or Fire power, they won't become small and need to use the item in reserve (if any); instead, they will become Super Mario/Luigi and keep the reserve item."
The way the reserve item works on the SNES where unless you fall into a pit it automatically releases discourages going back and getting two capes. (Spend more time doing that than playing the level you are trying to do).
I think the difficulty curve with 3 is still probably better. (Never played the GBA version of 3).

I vastly prefer Super Mario World. It only had so few powerups, but the game itself was much more creative and skill-based, what with the cape glide, spin jumps, and especially the hidden exits! Super Mario Bros. 3 felt too streamlined to me, though it was still a lot of fun.
The only thing I like more about World than SMB3 is that you can replay levels after beating them.
I think having alternative exits and it actually working in a fun way is good (And that the cheap tricks like going back to 1-1 and getting 5 lives and 2 sets of the best power ups are mitigated so its not something worth doing at least in the SNES version).

That is interesting. Thanks for posting. I also read the list of changes in the Super Mario 3 Advanced and they made it much easier as well. I sort of prefer the originals because I think making the games too easy is a problem in the current Mario games. Super Mario 3 to me is so much fun because of the challenge.
New Super Mario U, to me, isn't as appealing because it's way too easy, though I do like playing it multiplayer and it's much more difficult that way because of all the chaos.

I really don't get the "current games are too easy" attitude. The only reason I find Super Mario Bros 3 more difficult than New Super Mario Bros U are the slippery controls. Sure, I get more 1ups in NSMBU, but I find the levels equally challenging, and that's all that matter to me.
That being said, I prefer Super Mario Bros. 3 over World. I don't know why, I just enjoyed it more.
World by a mile (3 is great but World is so much better), it expanded on 3 in so many ways allowing revisiting of levels to re-explore for secret exits, secret worlds and short-cuts; Yoshi too. Plus the cape is by far the best power up in any Mario game. I haven't felt any 2d Mario has taken such a great leap forward as World in 2d platforming before or since (was hoping NSMBU would be in the same league but had my hopes dashed when I 100%ed it).

Because they are too easy...
New Super Mario U gives you power ups much more often, you have skills like wall jumping, triple jump, etc, coins are much more plentiful, as are power ups, you get check points that are like a mushroom, you can re enter stages and stock up on 1ups, almost all the bosses are push overs, etc. On top of all that, you get rewarded with the white Tanooki suit for dying too many times.
Super Mario 3 didn't have any of that and it's a much more challenging experience. Even Boom Boom was challenging at times.
Super Mario World was AKA Mario's Vacations Island. I will admit that many of Nintendo previous games was a lot better in art and design then later games but that is only because MANY OF NINTENDO'S ORIGINAL IP ARE COP-OFFS.
Yoshi for example was taken from this game Dragon-egg for the PCE.
Super Mario Land cover art is really the cover art of that MarK III racer.
Super Mario Brothers 2 really meant to bring Mario games to the Orient.
Super Mario Brothers 3 is really SMB2 because the real "Lost levels" is just an revamp of the first game.
The tiles, the stage, the set, the everything about SMB3 is what sets it apart. It was probably the first game to be done differently were Mario would save a different kingdom in the Mushroom world ( not just the Mushroom Kingdom ). So each area was like it's own mini-game world.
About the Koopa Kids designs. Personally I like the fact the Koopa kids/cousins all fought with wands but was slightly different. Also I like the fact that each kid had control over an different region of the world.
without an doubt Skyland ( with the reggae island beat down below ) was probably the most nicest level in the entire game next to.......that is why the game is sooo auwsome.......Their was parana-plant world. The Koopa troopa army. The DOOOOMMMMM SSHIIIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!,..lets not forget the RANDOM FIGHTS WITH THE HAMMER BROTHERS AND TOADS GAMBLING HOUSE. I mean OMGSH SMB3 for the Win.
SMW had it's challenges but those last things I mention about three just blows World out of the water. World was more like an grim-reminder of things and what was to come from Nintendo. I do not really think Nintendo made another real Mario game asides Wario Land 3 ( which is probably more better then World and almost great as SMB3 ( in fact the game had so many things including the mini-games, and the extras next to Smarioland 2 ).
I mean World kinda was annoyingly challenging for an game itself. Like an typical walk in the park.
If you have ever played "Popful Mail" the original game or even "Kirby Deluxe:Dyna Blade " you would understand what I mean. SMB3 had so much going for it, you can not hate it.
SMW yeah SMW had some secrets and challenges but that is about it. It has so much lack of creativity and is just plain annoying to remember.
IF THEIR IS ONE THING GOOD ABOUT MARIO WORLD IT IS THE A.I. The A.I. is one thing I really enjoyed about the game itself. The fishes would wake up or go to sleep. The Charging enemies would try different things to get you. The supa-koopas would maneuver. Yoshi would get scared and while scared even eat fruits?? I mean it was an crazy mess of A.I. in SMWorld. I mean SMB3 had some A.I. here and their but not like.
Also one world for this entire paragraph I wrote.
KURUBO SHOE. After that along with the Hammer Brothers costume. Their is no way in this world that SMW could ever stand up to the grace and insanity that SMB3 was. I will even say this; the game was pirated like crazy on the famicom.
Even All-Stars is better then World without SMB3. I mean World was great and all but seriously all we got to see was Bowser got himself a flying top. I mean great Bowser broke his legs back in SMB3 as well.
