Those Wii Wheel controls make no sense. They mapped items to the control pad and both reverse and drifting/tricking to the 1 button? How does that work?
It's called a "compatibility update". Basically, if they want people to be able to play dlc tracks online all they need to do is force everyone to download the content to their WiiU and then just "unlocking" it by buying the dlc.
Non buyers can play with them in online matches, but not freely whenever they want them.
Another option is disabling tracks not everyone has downloaded. So, if all X racers have bought the dlc, then they can play it online. If one hasn't then the others can't select it.

I just don't understand why anyone would let people play DLC courses it they didn't buy them. What is the incentive to purchase DLC if you can play it without purchasing it?
Most of my multiplayer will be online so I won't have an incentive to purchase DLC if I can play DLC courses online without purchasing it.

Because it's better than the alternatives. Besides, I don't imagine DLC courses will come up too often with the way the new voting system works, and if you wanted to play those tracks at your leisure (especially in local play) then you would have to buy them. The occasional times you might play on a DLC track can even serve as advertising, as Nintendo often lets you sample add on DLC before you buy it (think Wii Sports Club or Mario Golf.)
Ok, so HERE'S A THOUGHT (that I'm vaguely surprised no one has thought up, yet)
When you enter a room as HOST, you are the first person in that room. As HOST, your set up becomes the predominant one. Let's say you bought one DLC pack out of the three available. If someone joins your room and doesn't have that DLC pack, they get sent to another room. (More specifically, they can't join your room, if they don't have that pack.) Someone joins your room and has three DLC packs, including your own. Their DLC is disabled in favor of yours, as you are the host.
I know what you're thinking. "Well, let's say you have all three packs and you're host. Doesn't that mean you HAVE to wait for people that have all three packs? Couldn't that take a while to load up a room?" Well, considering you should only need about three or four people to play an online race, no, not really, but if you're really that concerned, why not ADD AN OPTION, WHEN CREATING THE ROOM, TO USE CERTAIN DLC PACKS? You, as host, may pick and choose which DLC packs are required to join your game.
This is greatly aided by the new track-picking system, which sounds perfect for this sort of thing.
What I WILL say about the other ideas. Letting players who don't have the DLC play the DLC isn't a great idea, but given the track-choosing system, it kinda makes sense. Forcing players to spectate matches they don't have the DLC for is NOT OK. That would result only in people getting pissed off, when they can't play. They certainly aren't going to stick around to watch the race, when they came to play, not spectate. This is an absolutely awful idea, no offense.
As for the DLC packs, themselves, how about 4 characters, 3 vehicles, and 2 cups? For the price of about $8 each? Maybe have a season pass for $20 (assuming 3) or $25 (assuming 4). Using the Mario Golf DLC model, of course. I don't think they'd go for four DLC packs. Heck, I'd find two unlikely. Ooh, how about this? One DLC pack for $30 including two retro cups, two new cups, 8 unlockable characters, 8 new vehicles, its own Grand Prix mode, and 8 new battle stages (4 being arenas, 2 being pre-existing tracks, and 2 being new tracks). Going for a more NS Luigi U model?

Sorry but all that sounds far too expensive imo. I just paid 60$ that could potentially bring the price to 90$ worse case scenario? No thanks as that far too expensive. I think if they keep it modest at no more then 15$ then it will be ok. Still a stretch imo but much better.
I still say they will need more then a couple of servers to play this online. Its more simple then everyone is making it out to be. You sign on then the servers read your content then bam, you are in a room with only people with your content. Simple enough.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
Then it would be both a missed opportunity and stupid financial decision! People will throw money at the tv screen to get more content!
Wouldn't be happy if they did that, it's just exploiting video games. I don't like the idea that they deliberately don't include stuff that they normally would, just because they can get some extra money out of it. That reminds me too much of Microsoft and EA, 2 companies that I sincerely hate.
It's all about what the people want (hopefully) why shouldn't they if there's a demand for it. It would be stupid on there part not to give us the CHOICE if to buy or not. I don't think it's exploiting as the main game seems content enough. If they want to redesign some more tracks and sell or give them away I'm all for it. No one says you have to buy it, it's there as options and I like options!
Plus if they did want to include more content in the actual game It will be unlockable dlc. If not I don't want to wait another 6 months to a year for them to add all the content in the world. The game falls in line with all other recent Kart releases content wise.
Think back to MKWii. When playing online, what happened when you didn't have certain cups/tracks unlocked? You still played them anyway. As a matter of fact, this is what gave me the motivation to unlock everything.
In terms of DLC, think of the Flower, Star, and Special cups as a sort of "on-disc DLC" that you had to pay to unlock (with time and effort instead of money). This is how online should work with DLC in MK8. I know that if I personally liked a track enough, I would totally pay to "unlock" it for use in my local game. The same could probably be said for characters, too.
1 + B for Drifting? I guess that makes a little more sense. IDK why they couldn't just use B, though.
Me neither. Seems like a really weird set-up.
Doesn't look like a 1. Looks like an arrow.

You cant really think that they will allow you to play DLC tracks for free right? Nintendo has spent money making the DLC tracks, and will want to be paid for them. If the new tracks are available via this new voting system to all players, it doesn't stop people from being able to play despite the fact they don't own the DLC. They will appear just as regularly as other tracks, and so a person who has not not purchased the DLC tracks will have no incentive to buy the DLC>
In my opinion, to sort out this dispute of splitting the player base, it is best to just stick to character DLC with compatibility patches, no problem.
They gave us free DLC for MKW. It wasn't great but it did add some value. They also gave free DLC for a few other Wii U games like Pikmin 3. It's not completely unfathomable that Nintendo would add a few little bits after the game was made but it's also plausible that they would release DLC that couldn't be used for online races (which would make it totally redundant to me). I'd rather no DLC than a poor effort and I see no point in extra characters or costumes because I'll barely get through the whole roster as it is.
I want full retro track packs. Charge a tenner and give us all MK64 tracks or MKDD tracks etc.
I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.
So what would you say if Nintendo offers free DLC for the game? If advertised properly it would encourage more game sales, so Nintendo's investment would pay off.
I know I'm going too in depth on something that may never happen, but I think it's interesting to explore the possibilities.
