What's wrong with backwards compatibility on 3DS? I didn't have a DS and am planning on getting some old DS games to play on my 3DS XL. Anything I should be worried about?

I haven't played Wii games on my Wii U because I can switch between my Wii U and Wii within seconds on the same TV. I've read that Wii U makes Wii games appear a little sharper, but I just don't want to use up limited memory on my Wii U on Wii games and if I can switch between the two so easily, then why bother? However, my sister sometimes uses the Wii U to play a Wii game like Wii Sports Resort when a friend comes over, but I don't think the memory is used up much.

The Wii had 512mb of internal storage. Considering Wii save file sizes, you'd have to play an extensive collection to fill even that meager space up with merely saving your progress. The vast majority of the Wii library use <20 blocks for a save file (actually most use <5). Since 8 blocks equals 1mb, each save file is generally less than 3mb.

Now it's true some are a lot higher, maybe around 160 blocks. Still, such a game would only use 20mb. Not many are even in this range (mostly sports and online-focused games), anyway... So...

Really, the last reason I could think of to avoid utilizing Wii BC on your Wii U is for fear of filling up your fridge, or whatever. Wearing out the disc drive, sure. But your Wii U would have to be essentially full before playing an entire stash of Wii games would have a tangible effect on your internal storage. If that's the case, do yourself a favor and pick up an external HDD (make sure it's powered externally or connected through a Y cable). Or at least a cheap SD card USB adapter to shuffle older games. Not need to arbitrarily hold yourself back.

I understand that your switching solution is convenient and practical enough. I just wanted to put the data usage into perspective. The Wii U hardware uses a similar amount of electricity to run, but the difference between the generations in terms of data is massive. You could make the argument that a Wii U owner may then use much more energy since they will be transporting far more data to and from servers, creating the need for larger farms.

...But that's neither here nor there. Point is, Wii games don't use much data at all in comparison to the Wii U generation.

Yep i used it to play all the rpgs i missed on Wii, now i'm slowly going through other gems i may have missed. I owned a Wii but it didnt get that much play outside of multiplayer sessions and i missed alot of games as i wasn't really following every release.

I actually sold my PS4 because it was collecting dust and my PS3 was getting more games i liked (I prefer Japanese games), in the last few months i picked up Jojo's Bizzare adventure ,Gundam extreme vs full burst, J Stars victory and i'm waiting Tales of Xillia 2 & Gundam Reborn to be released soon.

IMO backward compatibility is awesome and even though i tend to hold on to all my consoles its a headache reconnecting old wired consoles just to play one or two games. My PC can play games from 20 years ago and i'd like my consoles to do the same .

Quite a bit, since backwards compatibility was a large factor in why I got a Wii U. I had skipped the Wii generation, so I wanted to be able to go back and play games for the system. At the current time, I only own slightly more U games than I do regular Wii games.

My Wii is still connected, so I don't have much use for the backwards compatibility. Its always a welcome feature of a system, though...

I've been playing a lot of Mario Kart Wii on my Wii U, lately. Also, I'm considering going back to Super Mario Galaxy 2, soonish... maybe... bleh.

Very rarely. In general I find games run best on their original console and since I never sell my old consoles and I keep them all hooked up (or somewhere very easy to hook up) I just play the games on the console they were made to be played on.

Backwards compatibility is never a bad thing though and it is slightly disappointing that neither the PS4 or Xbox One have it.

I only use my Wii for GC games (I keep my GC at my other house) and I only use my DS for GBA games (backlight ftw), yet I still play DS and Wii games often...soooo....yeah I use it.

The Wii U literally has a seperate 512MB flash chip built in that's only used for Wii games. So even if you go into WiiMode and download all of the games you won't take up any Wii U system memory. You'll actually be forced to plug in an SD card to do the "automated fridge clean" that the Wii did on the Wii U even if you have an empty 32GB Wii U.

I use it all the time on my 3DS for DS games. I like the slightly blown up screen, but I also like that I can play natively too.

I never do it on consoles unless I have to.

I've beat these games since I bought my Wii U last March:

Pandora's Tower
Xenoblade Chronicles(for a 2nd time)
Sin and Punishment
Little King's Story
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
The Last Story
There's also games like No More Heroes and Arc Rise Fantasia that I still want to play

I wish the console wasn't BC though. Its terribly executed. Going into Wii mode is annoying and I can't even buy Wii games on the eShop. Playing Wii games on the gamepad feels weird to me too ....please fix this Nintendo so I can enjoy the my Wii backlog as much as I'm enjoying playing DS games on my XL.

Four more months until Bayonetta 2.

Why not just get a Wii then? You can get a new one for like $100 or a used one for even less.

Umm...what? Maybe I missed something, but I didn't think you could play games on the gamepad. I know there's an option to leave the screen on, but it forces you to use a wiimote.

I don't see the issue. If you have a Wii game inserted, you can access it in the Wii U menu just like a disc Wii U game. You can also boot into Wii Mode directly on console startup.

3DS, not very much. I just don't own very many DS games, I picked it up late and mostly got Pokémon games. So yeah, I've used it for the Pokémon Bank a little bit and that's all. Not to mention I still have my DS Lite and a DSi, the latter I actually purchased after already owning the 3DS because the bottom screen on my DS Lite is kinda crummy and the 3DS is terrible at DS games. Wii U I've played through a bunch of Super Paper Mario and a little bit of Metroid Prime 3, The Last Story and Galaxy 2 so far.

everything's good and it'll be that way forever!

Extensively. It's one of the greatest features a console can have.

I just used the 3DS backwards compatibility to play through Last Specter. The battery life on the 3ds xl is formidable when playing ds games.

I had a Wii but its not at my house right now. I think my younger brother took it with him to college or its still at my parents. It would be a waste of cash getting one since the Wii U can play Wii games.
