Topic: Does Sunshine Airport Hint at Super Mario Sunshine on Wii U?

I know this has already been posted in the MK8 thread, but I figured it would be off-topic to discuss it in that thread. So, here's the recently released image by Nintendo (for those who haven't seen and to set the mood for the post):
Untitled

The name of the course is Sunshine Airport and is obviously inspired by Super Mario Sunshine. So, since Mario Kart 8 is heavily referencing Super Mario Sunshine here, does anyone think that we'll see some form of Super Mario Sunshine on the Wii U this year? Whether it's a VC release (which would be huge, considering it would be the first Gamecube game for the VC), a remake (like Wind Waker HD) or a sequel? Or does the Super Mario Sunshine inspired level in MK8 mean nothing?

No, I don't think there will be

Mario Kart "heavily references" lots of Mario games... I fail to see how this is special.

Has a Mario Kart Track ever implied a future, unannounced game's theme, setting, or level?

And how many tracks have invoked a setting or level from a past property?

The odds don't appear to be on a promising trend.

Just as much as Coconut Mall confirmed Super Mario Sunshine 2's release on the Wii.

Everything Nintendo has ever done, even if it was simply done to reference a previous game, is them secretly confirming they are going to remake the referenced game.

MK7 had the DKCR track, and then... it got remade on 3DS!

...lol.

@Unca_Lz, @Retro_on_theGo, @Dark-Luigi Thank you guys for your well thought out responses.

@Gioku I can't think of any other Mario Kart game that used a track theme that wasn't from a game in the current or previous generation. So, this is the first time Mario Kart has ever done such a thing. Is that special enough for ya?

@ACK Just because something hasn't happened before doesn't mean it can't happen, does it?

No, it just means that Nintendo want to make a track loosely based on Super Mario Sunshine. They make Mario Kart tracks based on all their games. It's like how Mario Kart DS having Airship Fortress didn't mean a Super Mario Bros 3 remake was under way. Or how a new Yoshi's Island wasn't announced til ages after Mario Kart Double Dash. Or how Twilight House in Mario Kart DS didn't mean a Paper Mario 2 remake.

No.... but I would love a New Sunshine!!!!

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

turtlelink

I think every Mario Kart game had at least one Sunshine based track so nah,

@CM30 Mario Kart DS had an Airship Fortress stage. Super Mario Bros. 3 was on the previous handheld (Super Mario Advance 4 on GBA).
Yoshi Circuit in Double Dash, was not a "Yoshi's Island" stage. It was a generic Yoshi stage, which is something that all Mario Kart games have had.
I don't know what you mean by "Twilight House" in Mario Kart DS. I'm looking at the list of stages and do not see a "Twilight House."

@turtlelink lol. Every Mario Kart game? Half of the Mario Kart games were made before Sunshine, so that's clearly not true. Mario Kart 7 didn't have a Sunshine themed course, either.

So, once again, never has Mario Kart game featured a track theme based on a game that wasn't on the current or previous platform.

You're trying to hard at this point, oh and Twilight House is a battle stage.

I don't think so either. Ice Climbers appeared in two Smash Bros. games and still nothing for them besides NES Remix. While Pit starred in one Smash Bros. game and got a new game after 20 years of absence. I see the same with MK games, or even having a Sunshine related stage in Galaxy 2, with all those piantas and a waterproof Yoshi.

My point is, not every reference hints at a new project in the respective franchise.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

DudeSean

@Jazzer94 Trying too hard to do what? Tell the truth?

@sinalefa No offense, but I'm not talking about Smash Bros. here. Smash Bros. is known for obscure references. Mario Kart, not so much.

@DudeSean

I know, but my point still stands. The inclusion of Queen Bee and Rosalina in MK7 did not give us a new Galaxy game.

DudeSean

Again, they were recent references, not 12 year old references.

And yet nothing really suggests evidence of a new Sunshine game (or port/remake) aside from this track.

Piantas appeared in Double Dash, Wii, and now 8. They also appeared in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
