@Haru17 The game's built on the same engine as SSFII and every MH game since 3U (MT Framework). They definitely could port it to Switch (with a few changes of course).
The game does look largely final-- they've said they're mostly just polishing things up at this point (including VFX). I don't see it getting delayed.

@Haru17 About the grapple hook for descending, there may not be fall damage in Monster Hunter but it certainly can stun you, through stumbling or even falling flat on your face (as seen with Misty Peak's bridge jump).
So that was Ludroth I saw eating that other monster. Probably why it looks so fat there lol. Or maybe that was something different actually. Didn't look quite the same.
Man, this game is so awesome I can hardly contain myself. Honest to goodness I don't think I've been this excited for a video game in my entire life. They did Monster Hunter fans proper (just...not Nintendo fans, but that's not the end of the world, doesn't matter what box is running the game, all that matters is the game, although it's BOGUS there is no cross play. I have too many friends split between platforms)
Seems damage numbers can be toggled off. Nice. 30fps... not so nice. Even 3DS was able to do 60. 4K confirmed. Which means, despite their deflection to "we're targeting a stable 30fps across all platforms" the game must take advantage of X1X/PS4 Pro. Gestures present. Offline hunting present. Can use items while walking? Eh...
Status effects visible on your character. New radial menu for quick select. Traditional scrolling still present though. Can cancel out of drinking animation after health refills (so they are borking animations to an extent). Can recover health by gathering bugs and grass (not sure about this... smells like mass appeal changes to me). Multiplayer content can be played solo. Event quests offered for limited period. Can gather while running by. Can use crossbow to fire shock knives or grapple. Music shifts from slow ambient to full orchestra when engaged with a monster.
Even the questionable facts aren't enough to dent my hype. It's just too perfect otherwise.

@JaxonH I was speaking metaphorically: It's a new monster called a Great Jagras with the same sort of roll animation. Where did you see the # toggle?
I figure World will only be optimized for the PS4 Pro among the 8.5 consoles, exclusive content and all that. I couldn't care less about frame rate as long as there are multiple frames and... motion. Anyway, herbs and godbugs (one of the bugs anyway) already restore health and can be combined into potions mid-hunt, so I don't think that's much of a change. Instant gathering is going to make building up an item base so much nicer this time. The event quests having limited availability is going to be annoying though, especially if they disappear even after you have downloaded them.
And, dude, we haven't even seen this game at any other time than midday yet! Imagine how nice the hunts are going to look going from area to area while time is constantly progressing. I really hope time limits are gone in most quests. I don't play Monster Hunter for speedrun nonsense — leave that to arena.
@Haru17
I know, this game is all I've been thinking about nonstop. I just can't get over how good it looks. So relieved that they did this game justice. Its so freaking awesome I can hardly contain myself. It's going to be a long hard wait for this game. Honestly my excitement for pretty much everything else is out the window right now (I know that's only temporary because, even with MH games I eventually move on and get enamoured with other games, right now at this moment this is all I can think about it seems).
Found a nice long extended gameplay vid, for recap or for anyone who hasn't seen all of it
It's a different approach in many ways. Drastic changes in some regards, for sure, by and large they all seem to be for the better. The ONLY THING that concerns me is that out of all the gameplay they've shown they seem to specifically avoid combat. It also seems weird that when gathering there was no sound or screen prompt or anything indicating you were collecting something. But then again there was no jingle for cooking and they said that was in so maybe they edited it out? Or maybe there's just a jingle at the end but no music when you're actually cooking.
Idk, at this point it's hard to care because the game just looks so freaking good I already know this is going to end up my favorite game of all time.

@JaxonH I didn't know you were like an MH superfan! Yeah, you're a whole different league there. I honestly can't say there's ANY game I'm that fanatical about. If anything it would be Mario and Zelda, but even those I skipped in favor of PC games during my decade+ PC exclusive...so the N64 and GCN ones I missed until into the Wii and 3DS era. And if I were to list "must have" games the list would be too long (and too long to actually play them....I keep buying them....and not opening them in favor of something else!)
So yeah people like you will follow the series anywhere. I keep getting tempted by 1X really just for the 3rd party games...only one or 2 first parties grabbed me, but there's so few 3rd party games I really play these days. Bioware games and Assassin's creed or occasional Ubi or Square games mostly. MH, I play casually, I have fun with it, and I have fun with it because it's been convenient (or for 3HU because Rayman was delayed and I had nothing else new on U until Injustice came out ) But even on Nintendo consoles it's waaaay down on my list if there's other stuff coming out. So I'm coming at it from the opposite direction. Someone that doesn't care very much about the series, but buys each Nintendo entry and has fun with it. Certainly won't be buying World...not the slightest chance. I have too big a PS4 backlog I have yet to open already, and Switch games are getting the clear priority when I open things....and the release schedule for that is just excellent for the next half a year at least. And Monday I preordered several more PS4 games after the show....that will probably never get opened (Except Detroit...like P5, and even more than Horizon I HAVE to play that game. Someday. When Switch lets me breathe. Which doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon. Winter is coming. Fus Ro..whatever.) So I have the hardware for it, I spend money on games for that platform I never play....and as someone that's bought the last few MH, can promise I'm not buying world (but would buy XX in a heartbeat) because XX I can play conveniently on a system I'm likely to have when I want to play it, and World I can not. Also, no local multi. I mean isn't that half the POINT of MH?!? How is nobody talking about that?) But the possibly shady dealings going on honestly makes me feel less proud of ownership of Sony products. Capcom is just clueless and self destructive, but Sony, makes me really think I'm helping the enemy of gaming supporting that system right now.
Great response to Haru though....you really got it right what the issue is. If it were just Sony exclusive now I'd have shrugged and moved on. But the treatment of being explicitly and exclusively excluded for being among the people supporting the series this last generation, every iteration, only to be the one flipped off by this leaves a sour taste. I'm a PS4 customer too, but I supported it on my platform of first preference and dislike being told that that platform is the ONLY one to be excluded. And if that's not bad enough, being told the format I'd rather play actually DOES exist, but I can't play it (well not in a language I can read anyway...) indeed is a lot of salt in that wound. Of course if the "at this time" clarification means something, that really helps the situation. I'd buy XX.

Be perfectly honest I have never used local multiplayer for monster Hunter and probably never will. I think that's more popular in Japan. For me it's always been about the online play, and it'll be nice to finally have an entry that has voice chat (that's one thing that sucks about the switch is that every single game has voice chat removed from it because they're waiting for the online app).
But you know I'm just buying the game on Xbox so Sony doesn't get my money and I'm good with that. Yeah I'm upset Switch isn't getting it but you know something, if I were a teenager right now before I ever had any fondness for one particular platform, and if I saw this game, all I would care about is how good the game looks. I would be hyped beyond belief and the last thing on my mind would be caring about what platforms it did or didn't come to. Only thing I'd be thinking about is what stood between me and playing this game.
And I think once emotional feelings start getting involved to the point they affect your purchasing decisions it's just time to take a step back and remember there was once a time where video games weren't so serious and where all that mattered was the games. I'm hyped for pretty much all Switch releases, but to be honest I'd trade every single one of them combined for this here game... not even to have on Switch, I mean I would rather play this game on another platform then play every single game on Switch combined. Because that's how good I know this game is going to be. That doesn't mean I'll be ignoring Switch because thankfully it doesn't have to be a choice of either or. But I bought multiple consuls so that when I saw a game I liked I could play it... and gosh dang it I like this game. Screw the politics. Screw everything else.

Monster Hunter World has a good chance of being — IMO — the best new game on eighth gen, especially since every new game this generation has absolutely bombed with stories being limited and abridged by just how much damn money high fidelity, open world games take to make. Speaking of which...
The Switch for me is Generic Open World 'Zelda'... then Mario Kart 8 Deluxe... would have been XX if World hadn't been announced and looked 11 times better... then Mario Odyssey: please don't be a short game... then Metroid Prime: 4ever from now, with a couple of interesting indies interspersed between them.
I can't say I agree that Monster Hunter's strength is its local co-op play. I think that's why it's popular, but that's not the reason why it has merit: that's because it has the best combat system and boss fights in video games by a large margin, lol. That said @Nestolgia Skyrim is hardly a bad choice. It's one of my favorite games for its dense open world and also pretty dense environmental storytelling, and the Switch version looks to have some really silly additions. Maybe you'll get over your hangups and we can hunt some day.
@DarthNocturnal No they wouldn't comment on that yet, but Monster Hunter DLC has never been anything substantial, just armor and tie-in content. I don't see them charging for that. Link and Samus will definitely be gone though, maybe even replaced with some stupid Playstation characters like Kratos and Ratchet.

Controls.
Translating them into Xbox (with a picture of a PS3 controller and my One controller in hand):
Y- Draw Weapon
A- Evade
LB- Item select
LT- Aim slinger
RB- Sprint
Click right stick- Target cam
Start(?)- Open map (touchpad on PS4 controller)
B- Attack
Y- Heavy Attack (seems like a disingenuous description) (notes you can mash it to do a jump attack).
Y+B- GS rising slash (same input, really)
You cycle through items with the d-pad and can use square/X to use them at any time (so not only did they bork the potion animation, they let you do so without sheathing your weapon).

@WebHead
Well, despite its graphics, it's still basically traditional Monster Hunter. It just looks prettier and has some quality of life improvements. Major change for the series given how it's stayed the same for so long, but if you enjoy this game you'd enjoy any Monster Hunter game.

Something I just thought: since they're clearly taking inspiration from arts and styles...
...They better replace the CB's Ultra Burst with Energy Blade.
The Ultra Burst was nerfed heavily from 4U to X (273 total MV to 173, on top of lessened phial damage) and even with XX reverting phial damage it's still not that usable-- being more of a punishment for not charging your shield than a powerful attack you can fire out when the shield bonus is about to run out. A 5-phial Energy Blade has 150 MV and 200% partbreaker damage-- seems like a pretty good trade-off, if you ask me.

@DarthNocturnal It's largely just Playstation console warriors, really. That and graphics snobs who've already crapped on XX Switch.
I'm just tired of certain people being donkeys. Heck, I've seen a guy who's gone so far as to (a) complain about arts and styles being unrealistic while begging for underwater back (and then blame the fandom for "whining" when it got deconfirmed for World-- ah, irony), (b) say it makes no sense to localize both XX and World and thinks people should just shut up (see option a-- heaven forbid someone think differently!), and (c) compare the World/XX situation with Western fans to whiny brats throwing a fit on Christmas when they don't get what they want (Capcom's a company-- it's a two-way street. We pay for what we want from them.).
Just been catching up with impressions of various games on the show floor at E3, and one magazine in particular (Dengeki) made several interesting notes as well as a big talking point in that it was originally going to be called 'Monster Hunter 5'. I guess Monster Hunter: World is the fifth game in all but its name:
Monster Hunter: World has been in development for four years.
Originally, it was going to be called "Monster Hunter 5", but the development team really liked the name, "World"
The Base Camp spawns in random places. Each time a hunt starts, hunters will be at a different Base Camp.
Hunters can change weapons and armor midhunt by going to the Base Camp. This feature was added due to there usually being multiple large monsters in an area and from each having a different strength or weakness.
Hunters can now hunt freely without being held back by the main objective/quest, even if the quest is complete. Hunters can hunt freely without any limits now.
Hunters use Scout Flies as guides to help them navigate the area if they can't find the monster and to find certain items, including drool and footprints.
The monsters can easily change the environment you are fighting in with certain attacks and destroying certain objects.
Each large monster in a location has a territory in a certain part of the area. In some cases, hunters may need to lure another threat into their territory in order to get their target to reveal itself.
By hiding from monsters, hunters can avoid fighting them or prepare for a silent escape from the battle.
Capcom thought about giving the monsters health bars due to a majority of people. Globally, fans requested for a way to see how much damage they were dealing, so Capcom decided to add damage numbers to the this game.
The Quest Giver was fully voiced in English, and she sent the hunter on a quest to hunt an Anjanath, the T-rex-like monster shown in the reveal.
Hunters can quickly pick up resources as they run by, meaning you don’t have to stop and wait for foraging animations.
@JaxonH " once a time where video games weren't so serious and where all that mattered was the games. "
It's like you missed the Great Console Wars of the '90's! Kids went home bloodied for choosing the wrong side in those days! Modern console wars are trivial in comparison.
Well, you know I'm trying the cord cutting thing (I think it was you I was talking about that with when we were talking hotspots...maybe it was Thanos...) but yeah, online isn't my thing in general. I mean I was GLUED to splatoon 1, and I suspect I will be with Arms (I didn't expect it, but like Splatoon....it just happened....LESS THAN 24 HOURS!!) but in general I avoid online play (and large patch downloads....darn you Ubisoft.) I probably spent most of my MH time playing the solo campaign and about 25% playing local coop. Splatoon/Arms/Fighters aside I'm not really an online fan even slightly. All the E3 always-online games including BG&E2 kind of turn me off. If I do multi, I like local coop. Fantasy Life may be my favorite game for that. But MH was one of the best for that. (At least there's Kirby and Yoshi?)
I'm surprised you're into online more than local considering your Switch-at-Work tales. You're the one that convinced me to try tabletop after all!
But yeah, you, being a superfan, are definitely not really going to factor in too much with the trouble of the change, you're going to follow it and love it no matter what. It's the rest of us who aren't so dedicated to the series that learned to get into it in part due to its form factor that will probably sidestep it now.
@Haru17 Haha, thanks, but I'm, like 99% certain I won't be buying unless 6 comes to Switch. It's not about the hangups (those annoy me and harm my impression of Sony and Capcom as companies more than the game.) It's about gameplay time. So many great games, and I'm an RPG fan, and now Switch is getting me hooked on fighters (more time sinks between Arms and Pokken.) And Rabbids will consume me for a month or so (I'm barely into Disgaea 5!).....eventually I have to get into my PS4 backlog...which is now growing again. I'm just not a big enough MH enthusiast to bump it up on the list on an inconvenient platform. It's a game of pick up and play a round convenience to me. And you wouldn't want me in your party. I suck, lol
@JaxonH I will still never understand how you find so much time to play so many games....especially with being an MH obsessive. I'm being burred under my mountainous backlog, and I don't even have an X1 to contend with! Heck, even my 3DS backlog is growing again!
@Ralizah
I'm pretty sure it has the extended gameplay added in as well. The trailer wasn't nearly that long.
@NEStalgia "I'm surprised you're into online more than local considering your Switch-at-Work tales. You're the one that convinced me to try tabletop after all!"
I am. It's just that... Monster Hunter is the exception. And even if I could play on Switch and the ppl at my work bought MH and we played local wireless, it wouldn't be for more than 30-45 min a day. And MH is a game I play for 5 hrs a day, more on weekends.
I started playing MH having never played online before in any game, but by the time I was done I was hopping online like I'd been doing it for years. The community is hands down the best in the world, and is always eager to help new players hunt and learn.
I'll spend a good 150 hrs in single player. The other 450 hrs will come from 4 person hunts online. Which is the heart and soul of the game. TeeJay will be joining me again (we've been hunting together for years across multiple titles), and some new friends who will be jumping in. Even my brother. Anyone who wants to play I'll be playing with. Only resort to random when no one else is available or we have less than 4 hunters.
I'm extremely uncomfortable playing most games online, particularly competitive games, but Monster Hunter feels right at home. I had to give it a shot though, or I never would have discovered how amazing it is. And it's needed. Unless you have 3 other ppl by your side for 5 hrs a day, day in day out. Local would be great but, it would never be more than a now and then thing, and never for long.
