Ok, this is really awesome.

There is a free service called MoviesAnywhere that lets you link your Amazon Prime, , iTunes, Vudu, Microsoft, etc. accounts so that all purchased movies are linked to your MoviesAnywhere account.

By then linking to Google Play, your movies will show up under PURCHASES on YouTube. And since we now have a YouTube App on Switch, you can now watch all your purchased movies on the Switch.

https://moviesanywhere.com/anniversary-offer

Downside
It seems it won't play with a resolution higher than 480p, which may not be ideal unless you're watching on the handheld screen. But it's still pretty cool and maybe some people will get some use from this. There's really no reason not to sign up. Even if you don't plan on using it on Switch, it's really nice consolidating all your purchased movies into one place.

That Said
It looks pretty dang good on the handheld. Like, totally watchable. Even on the TV it looks surprisingly good, but that may be because my TV upscales to 4K, Idk. What I do know though, is this is perfectly viable for watching movies on the go.

I think the offer is only available to US residents, but the service itself isn't limited afaIk.

Maybe you could try and report back to confirm?

Nintendo doesn't have a problem with this ???
with everything Nintendo goes way overboard to keep things locked down (unless a licensing fee is agreed upon), I find it weird that they would just let a no cost app allow the circumventing of things like streaming media services or even a google play app onto their new Switch so benevolently without restrictions

What's the catch ???

???

Why would Nintendo have a problem with this? You're not circumventing anything. You're watching movies tied to your YouTube account that you purchased. They put the YouTube app up on the system therefore you can watch anything on the YouTube app, including your purchased movies.

@JaxonH
but why wouldn't you be able to watch your YouTube stuff (signed into your YouTube account) without it ???
why would I need a third party to link my already on my Switch YouTube account so I could watch my YouTube paid movies ???
it sounds messed up and confusing, and suspicious

"If failure is the greatest teacher, how come we are not the most superior beings in the universe ???"

Eel

@JaxonH I read that on their overall FAQ. Under the "Why can't I create an account?" question.

@Nemodius: from what I could gather they basically give you access to the same movie across different services. So you buy Coco on iTunes and they give you access to the YouTube version too.

(an analogy) it's like I have my tv, I have a DVD player, all on the same table, but they are offering (for free) to give me a device to hookup my dvd player to so I can watch my from their box ???
this makes no sense, I have the tv and dvd player, what is preventing me from just watching them directly ???
and as much as that seems wierd, they offer for free, just put our software on your device (that already has Youtube anyway) and link your YouTube account through us ???

if that don't sound like some damn USER ID THEFT thing then I don't know what does

"If failure is the greatest teacher, how come we are not the most superior beings in the universe ???"

Nemodius

@Yosheel
so what, are you saying I can watch Amazon Prime + through a YouTube page ???
they convert the streaming media from one source, convert it into a youtube video for you to watch on your Switch ???

and that doesn't seem hinky at all to you ???
not only would they have unrestricted access to your personal and billing info for YouTube AND Switch, but also the personal and billing information of the service you are having it transferred from......
and this is not one bit suspicious ???

@Nemodius
Just because you don't personally understand it doesn't mean it's "suspicious"

It's quite simple.

There are half a dozen different services that sell you movies. So if you buy a movie on your iTunes, you can ONLY watch it on iTunes. If you buy a movie on VUDU, you can ONLY watch it on VUDU. If you buy a movie from Amazon, you can ONLY watch it on Amazon Prime.

MoviesAnywhere links to all your different accounts with your 3 movies over here and your 2 movies over there and your 10 movies over here, and it consolidates them all under one umbrella, where you only have to go to 1 single site to access all your movies from a dozen different sites.

It then links to YouTube via Google, so that said movies are accessible on your YouTube account, thanks to YouTube's "Purchases" section.

It's the same concept as Windows Media Player or iTunes on your computer.

You have media in your MUSIC folder. You have media in your VIDEOS folder. You may even have music or videos in some CUSTOM folder. Sure, you can already access that media where it's at but you have to keep track of multiple locations. Windows Media Player takes all your media from all those different locations, and presents it under one common umbrella. So that you can see all of your media in one place despite the fact it exists in half a dozen different places. This is convenient for the end-user.

That's the exact same thing happening with MoviesAnywhere. They take all of your purchased movies from all of these different locations, and present them all together in one place. So that you no longer have to keep track of 6 different locations of purchased movies. Only with MoviesAnywhere, it's not physical movies it's consolidating, but streaming movies you've purchased.

I'll wait for Reggie to say something on this before I chance it
it's a nifty idea, but there's just too much that is just way too questionable at this time

Oh, btw, Jaxon "Suspicious" is a relative term, not dissimilar to "Opinion", one person's "Suspicious" may be another person's "Sounds Good To Me", so for me it ACTUALLY IS "Suspicious" because I don't understand and my experiences with other sites that seem to do the same thing and that if Nintendo was perfectly ok with this, then why not just have all those other companies have their separate apps on the Switch,
it's just too damn hinkey sounding, but that's cool, to each his or her own,

I'll wait for Reggie

Lol, do whatever you want. But there's nothing "questionable" about it. You're not "chancing" anything.

Nobody is going to "comment" on a basic functionality of YouTube (and certainly not Reggie). That's like saying you're going to wait for Reggie to comment on the Switch allowing you to browse the eShop, before you "chance it" browsing the eShop. It's a basic system functionality. Linking your purchases is basic software functionality of YouTube. You link it, you can watch it on YouTube. It has absolutely nothing to do with the Switch.

This isn't some grand epiphane Nintendo is going to comment on. This is a basic feature service that you are utilizing by linking your movies. Welcome to the post millennium age.

This is great and I love the idea as I have movies on google, iTunes, sky store and amazon but not available here in the uk

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

@1UP_MARIO
Ya, that definitely sucks. I figure it's only a matter of time before they expand out, or a competitor offers what they don't in other regions.

I haven't done too much research on the matter, so there very well may already be a service for other countries doing a similar thing

So this feature only works for purchased content? Not streaming content? So no anime on Switch... yet. Ah well.

Don't you guys have Cruncyroll???!! 😉

Unfortunately not, but, it's better than nothing. Certainly more than we thought we had when we woke up this morning. Gives me incentive to not only not hesitate to buy a digital movie going forward (since my hesitation was having movies split up across six different services) but keep Switch in mind when buying them, since I cannot access those movies on Switch. Kinda neat.
