@FishyS Too true. While NL's review was overall excellent, the final verdict part felt somewhat off. "Nothing genre defining or changing" for instance.
If you watch the YouTube video version of the review, it's pretty amusing. Alex gives his own comments after reading the review. I think NintendoLife has a policy not to contradict their own reviewers, but from what he says, it's humorously obvious Alex thinks the game deserves 10/10.
It's worth noting that the reviewer was quoting NintendoLife's scoring policy for 10/10: " genre defining game that we absolutely feel you should own.". It doesn't have to be genre changing and time will tell if it becomes a renewed genre-defining game, but evidently the NL reviewer didn't think so. We can make our own opinion in a few hours. π
@Rambler The reviewers were different but it's still quite contradictory.
@FishyS I can definitely understand their 10/10 guidelines, but as Mauzuri highlighted in the comments, TOTK got a full score and (nothing against it) it seemed to expand on the base game's features rather than bring anything earth-shattering to the table.
Ultimately, I could suggest that gaming news outlets are biased against 2D platformers. But that would be both totally unfair and shallow, considering I haven't even played the game and had the necessary info required to form a solid opinion. Nonetheless, the fact remains we are a few hours away from Mario's best 2D adventure in decades.
Let's enjoy the moment. (maybe even stop to smell the flowers - pun intended xd)
Nintendo Life is a website and not a single sentient being. It's asinine to split hairs over a review from 2009 - by a different reviewer - getting one point more than a game in 2023.
There's man all over for you, blaming on his boots the faults of his feet.
5am here in Dubai and the game has unlocked. Headed off to work but tried the first two levels and had a grin on my face the entire time. First it was βohhhhh you can do THAT?β Then it was βoh wow, you can do THAT too?β
Iβm not going to mention which classic platformer it reminded me of as that will give the game away - but you will see what I mean.
Seeing as how the game launches tomorrow, I'm going to announce: I WON'T be getting this game until NEXT MONTH for my birthday due to budget issues. That means I'll be avoiding this site along with places like Facebook, YouTube and TikTok because those are ripe with spoilers.
I keep expecting Peach to float and then being confused when she doesn't. π I also keep expecting elephant peach to destroy the things she lands on. π I need to reset my brain from other Mario games.
Took me about 2 minutes to despise the talking flowers. Whoever at Nintendo designed the 'turn off flower' option deserves a raise. Loving literally everything else so far.
@moomin Thinking about it, youre probably right. Itd be impossible for everything an outlet publishes to be coherent with one other, given the human nature of the writers.
And even so, theres not much that can be done to change it.
@NinChocolate
Honestly I thought I'd hate the flowers but they haven't really bothered me at all. There's enough going on that they just kinda fit into the entire bit. Especially when you unlock a wonder seed
Honestly I think what's really surprised me about the game is how good it plays. I know Mario be Mario and they all control super well but I feel like they've outdone themselves on this one. Hard to describe. It just kinda..... has a momentum about it that just feels right. VERY good

An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions
Anyone have a change of heart about the flowers? Or still as objectionable as first imagined?
I like the flowers while they are silenced β mostly I ignore them, but sometimes I read what they say. I hated the actual voice even more than I expected to.
Although I left the text on, I like that there is even an option to turn that off also for people who want to avoid the occasional hint.

I've surprisingly quite liked them so far. More often than not, the charm and humour of what they say outweighs its repetitivity, and it makes the levels seem alive.
