Just found this thread after searching for answer to whether updates are added to future cartridge releases, and am happy to see it's true. I started to wonder because I was a late switch adopter, and upon picking up mario oddyssy, BotW, and mario maker, was surprised to see current versions on the carts.
This means I'll probably want to wait a year or two to pick up 3D kirby though, since star allies seems like it got a lot of updates.
This makes Gamefly tempting, being able to play new games quickly, but wait to purchase til the cart is content-complete.
Also hoping I can get a complete Pokemon Brilliant Diamond down the line. I was quite sad the game released without even the opening cinematic, from what I'd read.
I was thinking, buying from a wal*mart or somewhere that sells out stock and restocks often may be safer than Amazon, where you may get an old cart sitting in a warehouse. Has there been any info on being able to tell a games revision on the outer packaging?
Games sometimes do come with update data in later releases but those are the games people want not all games that are in high demand will do these updates. This cost money to updates games on-cart to latest release one is StarDew Valley. I think they got the latest update so far. But that's far and few in-between that they have updated game carts. If they do they probably mention it on the labeling if it has the latest updated or no updates.

@Roz1281 Unless it has been expressly advertised on the box art, usually not. But then even if the game is advertised as being the "deluxe" version, usually the popular indie games (Dead Cells, Blasphemous, Streets of Rage 4, etc) have continued to get updates after the third or fourth physical release of said game.

@CactusMan Yeah, sometimes even the publishers themselves get confused. Ori The Collection is a good example. Whomever controls the Twitter account for iam8bit tweeted that The Collection was similar to the previous two releases (first was the $150 collectors edition, followed by the individual retail releases) and would require a download. Yet Ori The Collection physical release is content-complete for both games on cartridge.
