I realized the other day that the Mario Movie Direct is March 9th, a day before Mario day. I wondered why that is.... then we get today's Booster Course Pass announcement and the release date is on.... March 9th as well!
This is not a lot to go off of, but I'm one who likes to get his hopes up whenever there's a chance a new Mario game is on the horizon.
But there's little doubt the next 3D Mario is being held for the launch of the Switch successor.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,120 games (as of March 22nd, 2023)

@MarioBrickLayer I think you misunderstood, the Mario Movie direct is on March 9th, while Mario day is on March 10th! My suspicions are focused on March 10th and what might be planned for that day.
Of course I could be reading too much into it, but It's fun!
I think it's just going to be the sales, as usual. I really don't think anything special is happening. They've already kind of announced a lot more than normal.
@ElRoberico You're most likely right, as Nintendo hasn't been doing much over the past few years. But that makes me even more suspicious, with the Mario Movie Direct & Booser Course pass on March 9th. It just seems perfect for them to announce a new game the next day.
It's probably too good to be true. I'll still be getting my hopes up cause that's what I do lol
@Degguma_Uma Ah! I may have got the dates mixed up. I really hope I'm wrong, I desperately want a new Mario game. My first console was a Christmas present when I was a child, a NES with Dunk Hunt, Mario Bros 1 and Mario Bros 3, so I have so much nostalgia for the franchise!!
I just can't see us getting 3D Mario before the next console. I hoped we'd get a 2D Mario game to tie in with the movie, my personal theory was we'd have a game where Mario and Donkey Kong were both playable characters in a new style 2D game in an art style similar to the movie, but I think there is no chance of that now.
@MarioBrickLayer Ah that's amazing! You've been a Mario fan you're whole life same as me!
I agree on that second bit with the next console! A new Mario Vs. Donkey Kong game would be pretty cool.
I think I remember a recent interview with the head of Nintendo talking about how they're in unknown territory, since the switch has been out for more than 5 years and sales have stayed consistent if not gone up. With TOTK being on the Switch and the Switch's life looking to last who knows how long with the upcoming DLC for Splatoon & the Booster Course Pass wrapping up, I think we've got a strong chance for the next Mario game to be on the Switch
@Degguma_Uma Cool, what was your first Mario game?
The thing that I think holds back the possibility of the next 3D Mario game being on the Switch is the amount of time it takes to develop the game. They will want some tent pole exclusive titles for the Switch 2, the obvious ones are 3D Mario, Mario Kart 9 and the next Animal Crossing.
If we're lucky we get the next big 3D Zelda game before the end of the decade, so that will probably be the last major title on the Switch 2, or maybe it skips a generation and is a launch title on the Switch 3. Which wouldn't be the end of the world if we got Metroid Prime Remaster style releases of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess and a port of A Link Between Worlds.
The best hope for more 3D Mario on the Switch in my opinion is a port of Galaxy 2 and that would be a really random thing to announce! Maybe coinciding with general digital releases of Sunshine and Galaxy 1?
@MarioBrickLayer My first one was.... I have no clue, I've been playing for as long as I can remember, I think the first one I really owned was New Super Mario Bros. for the DS
I'm actually glad you mention MK9, you also mention the next big Zelda game but TOTK is right around the corner. My personal theory is that they've already been working on MK9, which would explain the drop in visual quality for the Booster Course Pass, and now that it's been finished and waiting to release for some time now, they're able to put everything into MK9's development.
With Mario being Nintendo's biggest IP, they would 100% want to keep it under wraps and not mention anything regarding development or that it even exists. With how long TOTK is taking along with Metroid Prime 4, it would make sense if they've already been working on the next 3D Mario game.
This all comes from a Nintendo fan's naivety and ability to overanalyze haha, I just really want the next Mario game!!
I would also love to see more ports, especially Galaxy 2
I really want to see Mario Boxing.
We already got Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Mario Baseball, Mario Strikers, but still no appreciation for cartoonish Boxing game with Mario characters.
The boxing from Mario & Sonic Olympic 2020 was not enough for me. It was too basic for cartoonish boxing games, I want to see some advanced gameplay like Street Fighter style with advanced Super Art meter.
@Anti-Matter Honestly? That's not a bad idea at all! If they allow Next Level games the lee way of getting a bit more violent, or expressive with the game, it could easily become one of Nintendo's best games.
Yeah, as much as I would love for that to happen, I'm not sure if there will be the next 3D Mario announcement on Mario Day. In regards to Mario, Nintendo likely wants to have their focus on promoting the upcoming Mario movie, and having that Mario game sale. Plus, Tears of the Kingdom will be coming out in a couple of months.
But yeah, as I said before and if it were up to me, I'd love the next 3D Mario game on Switch. Whether it's a Super Mario Odyssey sequel, or something like Bowser's Fury on a larger scale. It'd be kind of a missed opportunity to not have another 3D Mario for the Switch... after all, there's Breath of the Wild and its direct sequel, and Splatoon 2 and 3, all on Switch.

@MarioLover92 Yeah now that you mention it, the simple fact that Zelda & Splatoon both have 2 entirely new entries on the Switch, it just makes even more sense for them to have another 3D Mario for the switch.
@Degguma_Uma yeah, I can't wait for TOTK, but I imagine work has already started on the next one, probably just some initial meetings around concepts etc. They need to make a decision if they are using the BOTW "world/engine" again as they invested a lot in how the physics etc work. Anyway, the next big Zelda is 2028 - 2030, which puts it towards the end of the Switch 2 lifecycle or the start of Switch 3.
So 3D Mario is needed early (launch or year 1) for the Switch 2...My rough guesses for Switch 2 "tentpole" releases by year:-
2024 - 3D Mario
2025 - Animal Crossing
2026 - Super Smash Bros 6
2027 - Splatoon 4
2028 - 3D Zelda
With Mario Kart 9 in there somewhere.
@Degguma_Uma Yeah, it makes perfect sense I think. I also like your idea on a new Mario vs. Donkey Kong game, particularly a new one that plays like the GBA game, and Donkey Kong on the Game Boy. It'd make more sense to be on the Switch as opposed to the ones where you're guiding the Mini Mario toys to the goal, which are decent as well.

@Degguma_Uma
I imagined Mario Boxing gameplay is like Pokken with Super Art meter like Street Fighter and damage number displayed like ARMS.
Will be even better if the boys characters like Mario, Luigi, Mii take off their shirts and wear boxing trunks to make them look like pro boxers.
