My Switch SHMUP collection has grown just a tad since I last listed it in a thread back in early 2018. So I thought I'd make a new thread and a new list because I like making lists.
I've given them a score of 1 ro 5. The few that don't have a score, I've not played enough of to give an opinion but once I do, I'll add one There's a handful of arguable additions like Moon Patrol, Shock Troopers and Wild Guns Reloaded but I've added them anyway.
Just to be clear, I'm far from being an expert player. I do play them mostly with high score chasing in mind but stage 4 is usually my limit with one credit in most of the classics,stage 3 with bullet hell and I've never done a 1cc. I just love the genre and the Switch has been an absolute dream machine for me. So my scores are purely based on how much fun I've had with them.
Some may argue that the Psikyo ports have too much input lag and should be rated lower but I honestly do not notice it so it's not an issue for me,
There are 3 notable omissions, Raiden IV - Super Mikado Mix, R-type Final 2 and Devil Engine, I'll get to them eventually and I've heard good things about Dezatopia and Neku Navy but other than that, I think I have nearly all the good ones. Any new releases I buy I'll edit into the list.
I'm going to add twin stick shooters later. I think I'll make a list of my arcade games too, like Vendetta,, Ghouls and Ghosts, Virtua Racing etc...

@Magician I love a good twin stick shooter but I don't really class them as shmup. I did include games like Shock Troopers and Wild Guns though so why not twin stick shooters too. I'll have a look to see what I have and add a new section to the list.
I legit have zero Schmups in my Switch catalogue. This list is really cool, I honestly didn’t know there were THAT many quality Schmups in the Switch mix. Lol…not sure where to begin , I’ve always known of games like Ikaruga, never got around to playing em. I’ll start with a classic. Move on to a modern classic and go from there I guess?
@glaemay Yeah, I really need to get round to it. I've heard only good things about it.
@dmcc0 I find SHMUPS are great games to play in between the big games. So they usually never stay unplayed in my backlog for too long. My backlog is out of control but with RPG's, AAA action adventures and indies, lots and lots of indies
As for what ones to start with, I wouldn't recommend Ikaruga. Despite its greatness, it could potentially put you off the genre. Ikaruga is kind of its own thing with the polarity mechanic, which can be hard to get your head around. It's extremely challenging too. I've played it for around 25 hours and I've never made it past the 2nd stage boss haha. On a single credit that is. That's always how I play them. Ikaruga is one to play after you've played some other greats. You'll appreciate its uniqueness more then too.
For shmups to start with, Tengai (classic) and Rolling Gunner (modern classic), you can't go wrong. Add Gunbird 2 and Mushihimesama for a pair of TATE mode shooters too.
@NinChocolate That's a game I've been meaning to get and keep forgetting about it. I'll likely buy it over the weekend. Hacha Mecha Fighter is another I need to get.
I know you like Zed Blade. Don't tell me you like Prehistoric Isle 2 as well? 😀 Hyper Sentinel I want to like but I just cannot get into it. Alpha Mission 2 can just do one. That bloody power up system is a nightmare.
@OorWullie it’s a great list so I wasn’t going to protest anything specific lol. I know I’m in small company on that Zed Blade. Prehistoric isle 2 I probably like more than I should because my brain has an odd fondness for prerendered images. Alpha Mission 2….It’s powerup is bad, yes, but something calming about it lol
And speaking of Hyper, we need Hyper Duel on Switch.
Also why in blazes has konami not put out a Hudson Soft shooter collection? Lords of Thunder got stuck on Wii U for crying out loud!
@OorWullie I'd likely do that if I was only on Switch, but having an Xbox too I tend to play Forza Horizon and PES as my 'between game' games on Xbox and a bit of Clubhouse Games or Picross on Switch. And there's Game Pass too....
Just added a couple more shmups to the backlog too. Picked up Esp Ra De Psi physical from Play Asia and Void Gore was <£2 on the eShop so worth a try at that price.
@OorWullie I love your collection. You've got quite a few games that are in my buy queue. I only own thirteen of these as far as I remember, although I have played a lot more of them at some point. I pretty much agree with your ratings on the games I know.
I do like my shmups, and the Switch has been sooooo good for them. My family keeps asking me "why do you always buy the same game?" So I guess I play them a lot!

Got many of those myself plus a few on my wishlist.
Bit sad to see Carrier Air Wing only get a 3 but I know it’s not the best. Just has a special place in my head for its use of real world aircraft and its UN Squadron heritage.
I haven't played too many shmups myself but one series I've always loved is Gradius.
A Gradius collection on Switch, including Gradius Gaiden, would be so sweet.

You could've qualified more clearly I suppose? You asked for a Gradius collection and I see one is available. To me, your post comes across as a someone who's downing in a puddle a few inches deep.

Apologies for being so quiet. Back at work after a long holiday. I'll respond to everyone over the weekend and update my list with Espgaluda II which I can tell already is superb. I'll play it more before rating it though. I've got most of my arcade games listed and rated, just need to finish it off. It's a rather meaty collection too. Although nowhere near as big as my shmup collection.
Ha I'll have to go through mine - I think I'm on some 100+ shmups between X360/X1X, PS4/5 and Switch, and prob the sam ACA/Neo Geo between the same. I've got some stuff that I've played very little of if I'm honest though - at six quid a pop, I end up picking up most of the ACA titles regardless of whether I'll like them or not.
The real question is, do you have a Flip Grip to play those vertical shmups in tate mode portably?
