1. Nahobino from Shin Megami Tensei V seems to be the final one. It just makes too much sense. However, if he's not then I can see a few others being possible...
2. Koei Tecmo. One of the last big 3rd partys without a fighter. However, Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden is regularly in games rated M/18+ around the globe and therefore just as unlikely as Resident Evil, DOOM, and Mortal Kombat. Also, Nintendo has given up on making Fatal Frame/Project Zero as big as Resident Evil and Silent Hill. So, what's left? The biggest one is Samurai Warriors which is the sister series to Dynasty Warriors which is a spin-off of Romance of the Three Kingdoms which dates back to 1985 and was ported to NES in 1988. So, yeah the whole Warriors genre has a long history and one of the main fighters from the series, Nobunaga Oda, who also has connections to Nobunaga's Ambition, another old warsim/strategy series, would be the most likely.
No worries, it's a game character (based on a real figure, just like Dracula, Dr. Kawashima, and the Nintendog).
3. Capcom - Only Ken as a newcomer/echo but not a single DLC character, that's somewhat suspicious. I think something Monster Hunter is still possible. And I can see Phoenix Wright being a bonus fighter, but if there's truly only one fighter left he'll possibly be a Mii costume. Watch it being Chun-Li.
4. Taito. I know they're part of Square Enix now, but they have historical retro icons like Space Invaders and Bubble Bobble that deserve a place on the roster.
5. A Nintendo character. Rhythm Paradise (it's rumoured a rhythmic fighter like Chorus Kids has been worked on since Wii U), Advance Wars (why else is the Assist Trophy from Wii U missing?), or Spiderbot Porky (the only Brawl boss missing completely).
As much as Nintendo loves to subvert expectations, I think Rayman really does have the best chance of making it in. I mean, doesn’t it feel weird that Nintendo and Ubisoft have been working so closely lately that they let Ubi develop what’s now 2 games using their flagship characters (Mario + Rabbids) and yet they don’t have any playable reps in smash? They have 2 mii costumes added as dlc (Ezio and the Rabbids) so it feels like this is what they’re building up to. Also I’m sure Nintendo knew about the infamous smash 4 Rayman “leak” which, along with his likely strong smash ballot performance due to the recent release of the excellent Rayman Legends, could have Nintendo thinking his reveal will be a massive deal. While I don’t think people would find it would be too mind blowing as the internet tends to move on quite quickly, I know many including myself would be thrilled to see the limbless hero join the fight as representative for the major third party developer.
