I’m new to the forums (and this site). So, way back I bought a GameCube and Wind Waker. My wife and I had an amazing time with that game with literally hundreds of hours of playtime. I also played Rogue Squadron some as well. But that was it for games. Still - hundreds of hours of entertainment. Totally worth the price for 1 console and 2 games, IMO.
Well, I’ve been busy raising kids and playing PS3 & PS4 games the last decade or so. Thought I might be done with Nintendo. But the allure of BotW sucked me in. I’ve been following press on this game for like 9 months and it just appears to be a very high quality game. In fact, just stopping by after hitting that “Place Order” button over on Amazon.
Really just wanted to say hi and I’ll probably be around here a lot. Also wanted to ask - what should I know about the Switch? What is the one thing you think most important that a noob should know about this console? And what about BotW? Any tips or hints you can share? Any - “I wish I’d known that before I started” hints or suggestions? And, if it’s not too much to ask - what other 1 game would you recommend for the Switch if you could only have BotW and one other?
Well, Breath of the Wild is not a Zelda game. It's not even a Zelda game with a large, open overworld like The Wind Waker. Other than that, the more you know about it, the less you'll enjoy it until the fun just sort of peters out.
My recommendation would of course be Mario: Odyssey if you like platformers, adventure games, or even just AAA video games. Like Zelda it lacks a story, but that's pretty much par for the course for the 3D Marios, and the game feel is very meticulously crafted.
well for recommendations, I would say if you love jrpg with crazy open world and very good story, you can try to look for Xenoblade Chronicles 2-- have been playing it since the beginning of the month and boy, I haven't finished it even though it's so wonderful!
@NorrinRadd I'm sure there are probably things that would help you to play BotW optimally, but half of the fun of the game comes from figuring things out yourself about this particularly unique iteration of Hyrule. I hope you enjoy it. It's a lovely experience, and easily my favorite Nintendo game since Super Mario Galaxy.
If I had to recommend one other Switch game... if you never owned a Wii U, I'd recommend getting Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It's probably the best kart racing game Nintendo has ever made.
Other solid choices include: Super Mario Odyssey (platformer), Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle (XCOM-esque strategy game), and Puyo Puyo Tetris (puzzle).
As for the Switch... it's a blast. The versatility of the system is a life-saver if you're a parent and/or working adult.
Oh, and get a screen protector and a good case. You'll want those.
To expand on what Haru17 said, BotW encourages you to continue adventuring as long as you still find the gameplay and exploration fun, as it doesn't rely on the story to try to keep you engaged, so you'll get the most enjoyment from the game if you can leave more stuff for yourself to explore and discover in person. More than many other games I've played, BotW feels like it only ends once you've had your fill of playing it, not necessarily immediately after the credits. Anyway, Odyssey's a blissful experience if you like platformers, so (unless you don't care for the genre) that would be my recommendation, too. Happy gaming!
