Topic: Just bought Switch, only to find out about new hardware coming

Bought at Walmart yesterday and wondering if I should try and return. I have 15 days I believe. Not sure if there is a restocking fee. If so I won’t bother. Heard release of mid-August and wondering if it will be out in the next 14 days. Battery life would be worth it I’d think if I could return. But I don’t want my son to be without a console for any length of time.

@ajm222 it slated to come out mid August. Just let him play for the next two weeks and swap it out the last day, worst case scenario he won't have it for a day or 2, he should be good and may as well get the better version at this point.

Thanks. Yeah, I will do that as long as they don’t charge a restocking fee. And assuming I can get my receipt. I don’t think they printed one out for me yesterday. When I go in this afternoon I’ll ask if they charge a fee. If not, it won’t kill him to take a small break from the system.

So I just signed up for Nintendo switch online, which I guess is a necessary thing you have to pay for (we’re coming from a Wii U with no fees). I bought a physical copy of MARIO kart 8 deluxe but a digital download of Splatoon. I’m assuming because we linked my nintendo account that if I returned the console and got another one, all the save data plus the downloaded game can be retrieved on a replacement console because if he cloud, right?

@ajm222 yes switch online is a pay for service, $20 for a single user or $35 for a family plan. Yes Splatoon 2 will be tied to your account so if you get a new one you can just re-download it..... But unfortunately Splatoon 2 is also one of the rare games that Nintendo doesn't allow cloud saves for crazily enough. Majority of other games do support it but there are a few odd ducks S2 being one of them.

Weird about Splatoon 2 but that’s probably not an issue. Thanks for the info. Just wish I knew for sure if he new hardware comes out in August. Friend that works at GameStop didn’t know about mid August date. Thought it was later fall.

Correct - referring to the switch that will be priced just like the old one and have the same battery but apparently a new chip that will increase battery life.

@redd214 my apologies
Ahhhhh Oh, that chip revision with the better battery life. OK. Sorry guys. Didn't mean to muddy the waters. ajm222, that chip revision is worth waiting for.

Yeah. Wish I’d seen those articles a few hours earlier. I can return the one I just bought as late as 14 days from now but don’t want to be without one for very long. It’s surprising the SKUs are in the systems but no one knows the date they’ll show up yet.

ajm222

@Woomy_NNYes no worries

@ajm222 certainly is a bit weird that they still haven't locked down an actual date yet. I plan on getting one of the updated ones to but probably going to wait until BF as I'm sure they'll be some good bundles.

Awesome, thank you both! Will consider holding onto this for two weeks and then returning and hoping the new hardware comes out around the same time or within a week or so after.

Thanks, though coming from the Wii U it seems we’re mostly just going to be playing slightly updated versions of our Wii U favorites He’s big into Mario Kart, BOTW, Splatoon, Tennis and Mario Maker. Need to probably branch out a little.

@ajm222 Towerfall, Snipperclipsand Overcooked 1/2 are some great indie multi-player games to play with little ones. Mario + Rabbids, CTR, Bomberman, Sonic Racing, Kirby Star Allies, etc. Definitely some gems that aren't Wii U ports too, enjoy!!

Thanks for the list! Forgot about Mario+Rabbids, and we just demoed CTR (on the Playstation) at the store and it seemed fun. And I know we'll get Odyssey at some point as well, and Mario Party.

Walmart folks were able to help me get a hard copy of our receipt, and confirmed there is no re-stocking fee. So I guess now it's just wait and see if the new hardware comes out in the next couple of weeks. If there's no indication of it anywhere by the 11th I may have to stick with the one we just bought as I don't want to return if there's uncertainty about the release date. Despite mid-August being mentioned, some folks seem to think Nintendo wouldn't do it right before release of the Lite as that could hurt Lite sales. It makes sense. But I guess Nintendo Japan already has the new hardware? I guess we'll know soon enough. I would love something that has that much more battery life and stays cooler (heard about warping issues and the Switch getting hot in the dock). But I also already applied a protective skin to the new Switch that I'll be sad to lose (though only out $13).
