Topic: Is the Switch selling well due to the Switch itself or Zelda?

The Switch has had a good release in terms of sales, however at the moment, there is not much to show if this was because of the actual console or Zelda which could mean the sales might slow down quite a bit.

Zelda no doubt, a console is only as good as it's games.

We don't actually know that it is selling well. It's too soon to say. All we know is that had a record opening weekend because they actually produced enough units for those who wanted to buy it opening weekend.

It's going to be months before we really know.

They can tell the public just about anything they want and even twist the truth enough so it isn't a lie, that's basically advertising. Statistics like 'record weekend' can be manipulated to make the thing sound good so more people will buy. The real truth comes in shareholder reports. That will be the only way we actually find out.

@BiasedSonyFan Less than the number of units that were produced. That was not the case for both the Wii and Wii U, they were out of stock quickly so there is no comparison for the opening weekend there. It's likely that had there been enough stock for opening weekend of the Wii launch, there would be no Switch 'record'.

Bit too early to say it's selling well, in any meaningful way. The Wii U sold pretty well in the first week.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

i saw a little from column A and a little from Column B. i bought the switch cause i wanted a portable that i can play on my tv, and i honestly believe nintendo should market it this way. i know this will pretty much kill the 3ds especially if they start bringing those games to Switch as VC games. but i do believe they would keep selling them like hotcakes that way. its exactly how i tell my friends about the system, i tell them that its a portable that you play on the tv. Ive actually used it way more as a portable probably 80% of the time.

@Alshain01 so America and Japan have units left? Cool. You should let us all know where we can get them in case anyone's looking. You live in the us so how about 10 places in the us where I can buy one at launch price today. Bonus points for big cities.

Considering how bad the rest of the launch lineup is, probably Zelda. As the lineup fleshes out it might sell more for its own merits.

Depends on the region. In Australia Nintendo have released a statement to say that the Switch is their fastest selling console at launch ever. And they also said that Zelda:BotW is their fastest selling launch game ever. You can still walk into the shops and get a Switch fairly easily. They're not in stock at every specific store but they're available at most of them and all of the online stores have them in stock.

And sure the second fastest selling Nintendo system ever here was the Wii which was supply constrained. But the Wii U and 3DS were definitely not supply constrained. It's also worth noting that the last time I saw this sort of shortage of accessories that I'm seeing with the Switch was with the Wii.

So yeah, I think saying that the Switch is only doing well early on because of a lack of supply issues is wrong. It's probably doing better than the Wii did early on for that reason. It's not doing better than the Wii U and 3DS for that reason.

well in Jersey as of today NOBODY has one, went to all the retailers and had them do a store check to see if i can find one. bestbuy, target, walmart, toysrus are all out of stock, amazon only has the ones being sold for way more then retail price, and then theres ebay. Nobody has them online at the moment for the 300$ price range, so i would say they are sold out. Maybe if you live in one of the fly over states that have a higher population of cows then humans you may be able to find one but even that i doubt.

@faint ROFL, you really expect anyone on the entire planet to accomplish such a ridiculous task? You basically set an impossible standard so you could say I failed. It's not impossible because they don't exist, it's impossible because nobody would be willing to drive around all day documenting stores that have them just to prove you are an idiot.

@skywake I didn't expect them to be in stock at every single store, not all stores ordered enough. But that's not a production issue. All the major stores in my area of Texas still have them on the shelves.

As for how it's doing, it's all speculation like I said. We won't know till Nintendo makes it's reports to CEO's and shareholders.

You missed the point I was making. The only recent Nintendo console to have stock issues was the Wii. The Wii U, Switch, 3DS and DS didn't have stock issues in Australia. Switch is still the fastest selling Nintendo console here. Enough that despite not being a pack-in BotW is the fastest selling launch game.

You said the Wii U was out of stock at launch. That definitely wasn't the case here.

@skywake The Wii U, 3DS, and DS never outperformed the Wii though. You can't say it is the fastest selling without accurate numbers. "Fastest" really is a wishy washy word in the first place, what makes it fast?

What is important is long term performance. Once again, we do not know that. We don't have any real sales numbers.

@Alshain01
Again, your claim was that selling fast at launch means nothing because Wii and Wii U were both supply constrained and Switch is not. All I'm saying is that here Nintendo are making the same claim. And here Wii U was definitely not supply constrained.

Nintendo themselves believe games sell consoles.

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.

@Alshain01 no we just have several Nintendo regions stating record breaking first week sales. Do we assume it's all lies?

@faint
Yea... getting one in the U.S. right now... very difficult unless you're willing to go eBay. I was able, however, to go to my local WalMart last night and get a Pro Controller. Don't know if they were just restocked or something, but they had SIX of them there lol Very different from what most people are reporting, and you still can't find those things online. I think it's just a case of having a WalMart in a relatively small-population area.

But like someone else said, the Wii U sold pretty well during its first week, so we have to wait and see (although I was able to walk into a pretty big Gamestop without a preorder during the first week and get one - would not have been able to do that with the Switch, even in my area).

I think Zelda is definitely budging some people who didn't own a Wii U. Zelda is actually still in the Twitch top 10 games you see when you go to the main site, which is pretty shocking for a single-player game: those tend to drop out within a day or two of launch and the usual multiplayer games fill back in.
