Portable gaming is huge in Japan, that's not a big secret. But the Switch is gradually gaining ground on the Vita in terms of popularity among Japanese developers. The Vita has managed to remain relevant thanks that homeland support. But now the Switch gold rush is on.

I just hope those publishers who focus on translation and localization of imported games (NIS America, XSEED, etc) can handle the load, because the floodgates are open.

@Magician I am always jealous of all the Japan exclusive visual novels and such that Vita gets. I am glad Steins Gate is coming to the Switch, and I even picked up Nekopara (yea yeah you can laugh). I like that format of story telling, the visual novel and want it to gain at least enough popularity in the west that we get more. I could always pick the titles up in Japanese. My Japanese is good enough that I can manage, but playing in my second language always makes it take longer. XD

Also my Kanji is about the level of a Japanese 2nd grader. lol

@Heavyarms55 educate me please as I don't know much about the more niche (in the west anyway) Japanese genres. I really enjoy the TellTale games Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead especially. Is there any titles with similar gameplay but with more Japanese subject matter?? And if so what are there chances of localisation?? I enjoy a strong story but am a little put off by the visual novels lack of gameplay but again this could be my own ignorance!!

bring me more interesting Japanese games to the switch like the one that's my avatar for example, although i don't expect the game that im using as my avatar to be on switch. than again, there is a NSFW game on switch, so it's possible. weather it's for mature, for kids or for teen. any Japanese games will do and likely sell.

@bluemage1989 There are all sorts of Japanese visual novels. The overwhelming majority of which don't get localized. They range from dating sims, to horror games, to suspense thrillers. Many tie in with anime or manga series. Others are adaptations of novels or spin offs of other games. The main reasons I usually find for why they don't get localized are:

1. they tie in with another series that also hasn't yet been localized
2. they cover a subject matter they think westerners would be uncomfortable with (usually something sexual - personally I find this absurd, considering how overly sexual western media is)
3. they don't believe it will sell enough to justify the cost of hiring a competent localization company - visual novels generally don't have or need a high budget
4. they think the story is "too Japanese" and wouldn't be understood or appreciated by western audiences.

Japanese visual novels usually don't have the timed button presses and such that you see in Telltale games. Some are, like Nekopara, just a straight story with animated pictures and voice acting. Many others have different routes and endings. Horror games might have routes where the MC lives or dies, while dating sims often see you having the option to end up with one of several different characters. Visual novels in Japan often have a wide range of target audiences too. From ones based on anime that are suitable for most ages, to others with an extremely adult oriented story that you'd never see on a Nintendo or Sony platform, and everything in between.
