@PapaGodzilla There was server maintenance going on from 9pm to 10pm ET. Sometimes maintenance can run longer than planned. I've never heard of your issue. So, I'm inclined to think your problem likely related to the maintenance. I think there was maintenance this fall that lasted 2-3 hours rather than the normal 30-60 minutes.

@PapaGodzilla Oh, really. Hmm. Sorry to hear. Nintendo's support page search doesn't seem to yield anything (that I can find) covering your scenario. I'd call their support. They're open.

When you call, it will be helpful to have their support page loaded on a browser in case they point you to a set of directions. They will ask for your email, but it's just to look up your nintendo account.

@PapaGodzilla If you're able to resolve the issue talking to Nintendo support, I'd be very curious to hear what the solution is.

Have you tried disconnecting your switch from the internet first?

Please tell me were you able to solve the problem? About four months ago I bought the digital game for the Nintendo Switch and I was able to play without problems. But today I went to play and the exact same thing happens to me, always in the update loop and without being able to play. I have done everything from deleting it and reinstalling it and playing offline, looking for errors and the switch says there are none. I don't know what else to do. I wrote to aspyr without getting a response and in my case to Nintendo Europe and they still haven't given me a solution. I find it shameful that I bought a game and can't play it, stupid digital format. If it were easy to get it in physical form this wouldn't happen... I hate that people don't appreciate the physical form more.

I have a hunch what the problem is.
A few physical games out there have updates on them which are newer than are being distributed digitally.
I've had this happen with titles like Hypnospace Outlaw, Snake Pass, and Fox n Forests.
If you've played the physical version, the system remembers that update version and tries to redownload it if you play a digital version, but it fails to do so. It also forces you to install the update because it thinks you're missing a necessary update, but since it cannot the game becomes unlaunchable.

From this topic though it sounds like RWBY: Grimm Eclipse is failing to distribute that update even if you haven't played the physical? Limited Run Games did a physical release of this game, so of course there aren't many physical copies.
Are you at least still able to play the game in spite of the missing update? Most Switch games still let you boot and play the game if that happens.

There's a workaround to this but it requires two Switch systems and a physical copy of the game.
Using the "Match Version with Local Users" option under Software Updates, a Switch with the physical game inserted can share the update data to another Switch, and install the update digitally that way.
I had to do this to make my digital versions of Snake Pass etc playable again after playing with my physical copies.

@RupeeClock Thank you very much for your reply. The problem is that I can't play without the update, every time I try to enter the game it asks for an update even if I'm offline. So the only solution would be to have the physical game to be able to match that update somehow with another switch because I don't know if they would release a digital update at this point...

@Hotpotatoe
Yeah, what happens is the Switch system remembers what the latest update played was, and if your system is missing that software update, requires that you must have it to play again.
There is another option, but it unfortunately involves factory resetting your Switch. If you don't have Nintendo Switch Online for the cloud saves you'd lose all your save data, and you still have to redownload everything. For the games that do not support cloud saves like the Pokémon games or Animal Crossing New Horizons, there's no way to avoid the save data loss.

The best you can hope to do is to reach out to the publisher or developer of the game, through their website, social media, etc, and flag the issue. Preferably with evidence that you're trying to download an update for the digital version and that it's failing.
A newer software update existing but not being available to download is a known issue that's affected multiple Switch games and is an absolute pain, it's usually a distribution issue as the developer/publisher has a responsibility to get the updates available.

@RupeeClock I will try to see if the developers can help me by releasing an update somehow, because I wouldn't like to lose my data and I'd prefer something simpler. Thanks for your answers and for your help.
