Can anybody shed some light on this as I have 1500 gold coins on my Nintendo account to use BUT I got an email saying to use them soon or I will lose them end of the month?!
Is this right? As how it looks to me is Nintendo have timed it in a way where loyal customers points will expire just before the Nintendo Switch rewards come out!
Am I just being paranoid because most of my points are from purchases from the last few months so why the sudden expiry?
It seems to me they know that people have collected a fair amount of coins so they don’t want to lose too much revenue on this hence the use your coins now email, which if true would be a slap in the face.
Also the rewards available right now, none of them appeal to me sadly so I feel I’m being screwed over in a sence...
So have I got this backwards?
You shouldn’t be losing all of them. Go to you my nintendo and check their status. I think gold expires six months from the date you get them. Unless you got them all at once it shouldn’t be the case.
@faint so you know if I purchase a switch game digitally am I still getting gold coins for them even though switch rewards are not available yet?
Il check then...thats not as bad as losing all of them but I still feel they should let the gold coins have longer shelf life or at the least have much more variety to get rewards...
Thanks for the feedback
@Deathwalka - I had the same fears about expiring points. However, the deal is that the rewards come into effect in early or mid-March, but points don't expire until the end of each month, so all us launch-day buyers get about two weeks to choose a game to spend our gold points on before they expire.
I suspect it will coincide nicely with the launch of Kirby - although I'd rather have that in the physical format.
Yeah, I have had some expire, but didn't really know what they were good for. Apparently starting in March, we will be able to get like five percent off certain games. While this is OK, I liked what they did on the old system, getting actual free stuff.
As it was mentioned before, it looks like its at the end of the 12th month. I got my Switch a few weeks after launch and all of my gold points expire on the 31st of March. Hopefully we get something decent to redeem them on. I miss Club Nintendo.
Also, how late is early March to them? To me it would be within the first week or two. Patiently waiting an announcement.
Another annoying aspect is $60 games now get 300 gold coins as opposed to the 60 we used to get making the last year of buying games almost pointless as far as the rewards go.
@YummyHappyPills thats where I'm at. Probably won't be much better for you guys either. I know you shouldn't complain about getting something for free. But this is hardly worth it. I don't like how the reward is higher for digital purchases. That would be easier to go with if they included more storage on the system.
My Nintendo has updated with the ability to do Switch rewards. Gold coins are worth 1 cent and games have gold coin caps.
For example: Stardew Valley only allows you to use 75 gold coins so you only get 0.75 off the total price...
Edit: so basically the gold coins are still worthless
I don't think you're right about that. Outlast 2 says it's eligible for "up to 150 gold coins" but when I go to check out it lets me use all 673 of mine. I think that eligible thing means how many coins you can get in your My Nintendo account if you buy the game using real money.
@DTMOF84 We can spend gold coins on anything on the eShop, not just certain things. Gold coins can be redeemed on physical purchases for two years, not one year.
Oh, and there isn't a limit on how many coins you can put toward any purchase.
Now Playing: Mario & Luigi Brothership, Sonic x Shadow Generations
Now Streaming: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
So, yeah, I'm happy with this system. I knocked $3.34 off the price of Detention and received the equivalent of 49 cents in return for what I did end up spending on it. While I won't save as much downloading games on the eshop as I would preordering them on Amazon, it does lessen the gap enough that it might just be worth downloading certain games for the convenience of always having them available on the system.
More importantly, this is more of an incentive to not wait for sales and actually nab digital games when they first release.
@dings That’s the amount you’re earning for your purchase (always 5% of the total price). I have 602 gold coins, and I just used them to get Subsurface Circular ($6) for free.
This is a good system. My Switch is 100% digital, so the 5% back will add up fast!
I think it's pretty good. You can save a bit of money on some games and in turn, get cashback on said game you saved on. This is what my Nintendo should've been from the start IMO.

Club Nintendo always had some exclusive items you could only get from it that I liked. I hope there are incentives down the road to make this new program a little more exciting. Game sales that offer bonus gold coins on your purchase or something.
