I’m glad Chapter 5 seems to be landing well. Deltarune is one of those games where the wait actually changes how people play it. Every new chapter gets treated less like “more content” and more like everyone checking the machinery again to see what Toby Fox has been hiding in plain sight.

I’m curious whether Chapter 5 feels more self-contained, or whether it’s mainly setting up the next turn. That balance has always been the interesting bit with this game.

Earlier today, I finished my normal playthrough of Chapter 5 (and I'll do my Weird Route playthrough tomorrow; I am very scared). Overall, it was an excellent chapter, and I found myself bearing a stupid grin the whole way through (impressive, considering I have the flu).

Now for various thoughts about the specific contents of the chapter. Nothing could have prepared me 4rda 4rd Sanctuary. Susie and Noelle's date at the festival was very nice (it was honestly a bit of a surprise for me, because I thought for sure the Festival would happen in Chapter 6).

I love the flower dudes, especially Aqua, Yellow, and Seth (though it's more of a love-hate relationship with Flowery... he's great and he is also the worst). I loved the subplot where Susie and Ralsei accidentally convince Yellow to kill himself, so we have to stop him. It's so funny how I expected for the flowers to just turn into some Flowey stand-ins, but what we got was so much better.

The music of the game continues to be exponentially better than any song not made by Toby Fox (HOW IS THIS GUY SO POWERFUL). I especially loved the songs Petal Dance, Sunset of Seven Suns, and Running Sky.

The story focusing on the moral ambiguity of sealing the Flower King Dark World and taking away the fantasy of the flowers was very, very interesting. I also liked that Ralsei got a lot of spotlight in this chapter, between his anger at Flowery for breaking the rules and finally using a fire spell for combat.

The PetalFeather mechanic where the game just becomes a sidescroller was a fantastic surprise. It feels super satisfying, and the ACT system was very interesting (I only wish there were more ACTs).

In retrospect, Mad Mew Mew makes a lot of sense being the secret boss. We knew about the Japan theme from the trailer, we knew about the Cat/Puppet armor class, and for the Field to be of Pink and Gold like Gerson described, we needed a Pink. Some of the attack patterns were a bit too erratic for my taste, but she was still an enjoyable boss.

Now to dissociate until Chapter 6 releases.

A new update has dropped for Chapter 5 adding new difficulty options for the Shadow Crystal boss of the chapter.

After losing once, a pink bomb will appear outside of the arena that allows you to choose "Nicer" or "Meaner" difficulty in addition to the pre-existing "Default". The "Nicer" difficulty causes the small bomb attack to have indicators of where the explosions will occur, as well as make said bombs take slightly longer to explode. The "Meaner" variant causes all attacks to become 25% stronger and increases the speed of several attacks. A final note is left in the patch description, stating "Note: Girls like it when you are better at dodging danmaku."

Several bugs have also been fixed.
