The idea of this forum is to compare the Switch's $330 pricing to a probable $500 next gen console. While prices will not necessarily rise, but they will at least stay the same, therefore allowing us to debate how the Switch might fare against it (or them).

@Alber-san Fair point, and I understand your motivations, but I just wanted to point out, that if you mention listing ALL prices for both Xbox and Playstation consoles, that you can't in all fairness skip one, just because it doesn't support your narrative. No offense, though.

@Alber-san No, no you don't.

Sure the X released at 500 but it's been marketed as a "premium, high end, luxury" console from the jump. That really shouldn't be used as a basis for your assumptions. The base model is still 200 to 300. I predict a price drop for the Pro/X this year if not next anyways. I would be inclined to say the Ps5 and Next Box would launch at 400. You're ignoring the fact that most likely they will be launching with hardware that is "current" right now not what is current in 2 years. Thus the won't be as expensive as you seem to believe.

To add, this is the first time we've had a mid gen console spec bump from what I recall, so to be fair we have no clue how they will handle pricing moving forward with future gens.

Yes, but only really a stupid person would actually pay $1000 for a smartphone. It's not the standard price of a new phone. You can get a phone that's almost as good (missing only animated Emojis) for a fraction of that price. It's essentially price discrimination, where you sell a near-identical product at different price points to different consumers based on their willingness/ability to pay. Video game consoles have a smaller market and need to be cheaper than a gaming PC. I can see high-end models having a somewhat bigger price tag, but I don't think the standard cost of a new video game console is going to be approaching $1000. Sony got a lot of crap in 2006 when the PS3 cost more than the Wii and 360 combined.

Also, here's an up-to-date version of that console price inflation chart.

I encountered someone who was rather disgruntled that he had to buy an $800 Iphone instead of something much more reasonably priced. He had to, because his wife would only use an Iphone. And it had to be the latest one.

It's difficult to say without knowing the final specs for the PS5 or Xbox Scarlett. $400 for the base model for either is a reasonable assumption. But we have rumors of MS releasing two different SKUs, one for streaming and one for download play. The streaming console could easily be marketed at $200, while the premium download console could be $500.

[OT] Even though I live in a major city, my Internet service isn't reliable enough for the suggested 25mb down streaming console. So I'll be forced to purchase the premium download Xbox Scarlett regardless.

It might have been marketed as a luxury console but its price is equivalent to its hardware. Not even that because it was sold at a loss. I'm not comparing current PC hardware but console hardware. If the XBox One X was being sold last year at a loss at $499 chances are pricing won't go down for next gen consoles for various reasons:

  • Very small time lapse
  • It will be the console to beat
  • It was being sold at a loss

Because of components becoming cheaper and cheaper the first factor shouldn't be a problem in theory. However, the Xbox One X was being sold at a loss meaning $499 isn't its real current pricing. If Sony and Microsoft continue their trend of making more powerful consoles chances are they will be more powerful than the X. This would mean that they have to be equivalent in price to it. Even if there is a price drop next year or the year after it will still cost $399 (might be wrong but consoles don't drop more than $100 normally right?). People are speculating next gen will arrive in 2019/2020 and you don't want old and next gen consoles clashing in price.
Of course next gen could come later, or they could turn to streaming games, make Switch clones or even try to innovate (lol as if) but this is speculation and the chance of consoles being cheaper in 2 years and better hardware than the X is very slim.

@FaeKnight Ouch. Yeah, fiscal responsibility will definitely be a litmus test for me...

I'd assess a $50 price drop to be more likely, with $100 price drop only happening once the new system is well established. A $500 gig hard drive XB1 (base model) without kinect dropped from 299.99 to 249.99.
