@JaxonH

Thanks for the information re.Borderlands. I don’t mind a big download but not as a one-off code. No resale value. I haven’t opened my copy so I’ll just sell it now while it’s worth something and wait for a Digital sale.

Pro Tip

In Switch Settings, use the button remapping feature to swap R for Y, and Y for R.

Reason being, Y is the action button to open safes and grab ammo/health/guns. Constantly taking thumb off right analog to use Y is annoying and aggravating as heck. Not to mention, Y is used to reload as well.

But since R is only ever used for grenades anyways, you can swap them and be able to open all the safes and grab items and reload without taking your thumb off the right analog. It makes the game incredibly fluid to play.

Ya. I've been using button remapping alot lately.

Swapped Left and Right Dpad for ZL/ZR for Xenoblade, to toggle arts without lifting finger in battles, and now Y for R in Borderlands, to reload, open safes and pick up items without lifting finger off analog...

Can make menus a tad confusing when you forget Y is the R button but it's never a huge deal. Quickly realize oh ya, need to use this button I swapped it with.

Wow.

Borderlands 2 is (and this is one case where the collection’s title actually feels like it’s warranted)... it’s straight up legendary

I’d forgotten how amazing this game is, but to be fair, I don’t think my experience with it on the Vita was really conducive to getting the full experience.

My goodness is this game addictive. Especially with the gyro aiming. The difficulty is tough, but not unreasonable. It’s perfect, actually. It’s challenging to the point you WILL die from time to time. It’s gonna happen. But the game doesn’t really punish you more than taking a few dollars out of your pocket, and the best part is when you start at the nearest checkpoint you pick right back up where you left off with however many enemies were killed. So if you’re fighting 12 enemies and you manage to take out 7 of them and then you die, there will be 5 left when you come back. This ensures you never get in a situation where you’re just stuck because you’re under leveled or your skill isn’t up to scratch.

And the second wind mechanic is GENIUS. Absolute genius. I can’t count how many times I’ve died but managed to get a kill in the 10 second window when you’re crawling on the ground, which instantly injects you with HP and puts you back in the game. I love it. The rush is palpable.

Then there’s the stats, skills, buffs and status effects. So much loot, with so many different options and types of guns and damage multipliers, bonus effects, etc. Once you find a good set of weapons you like and get comfortable with? Oh it’s on. And I LOVE the skill tree, and the Badass Rank Bonus stats which are completely supplementary to the actual skill tree, which you get for completing challenges of which there are TONS. Every time I check the menu I have 1-2 more Badass Tokens and I’m not even trying to get them. You just complete stuff naturally as you progress. Love how it lets you choose which category to get a bonus in- extra 1% max health, or shield capacity, or shield regeneration rate, or shield recharge delay, or Gun accuracy, etc.

I’m not far (had mostly been playing Borderlands 1 and Pre-Sequel until now, speaking of which, I have some great things to say about the Pre-Sequel, being on the moon with less gravity and rocket boost jumps and oxygen bubble outposts with an O-2 meter... it’s such a refreshingly diverse take on the formula that really earns its spot in the collection to provide a change of pace from the more traditional Borderlands 2), but anyways, I’ve been doing every single side quest just to make sure my level stays current with the main story quests. And it’s just enough to stay current, even after like 4-5 sidequests. So you really do have to earn your keep. No free rides.

The controls feel amazing on Switch once you dial in the sensitivity. The gyro feels incredible. The game looks breathtakingly beautiful and it runs flawlessly. This is such a crucial, CRUCIAL addition to the Switch library. So many games releasing nowadays and so many games that have released over the last 10 to 15 years that are “good games”. But very few are iconic, very few are truly, legitimately legendary. Borderlands 2 is one of those titles (and I’ll lump the Pre-Sequel in there with it and just say Handsome Collection since it complements BL2 so well, even if it’s BL2 that’s indisputably king). This is a game everyone should have in their portfolios.

@JaxonH No you can understand why I have the game on every console 😄. Who are you playing as in BL2??

@Tasuki
Ya, I have it on Vita, PS4 (Sold to buy on X1 when I migrated to Xbox), X1 (selling now that I’ve migrated from consoles to Steam), Steam and now Switch. Wow.

I’m playing Axton, though I played as Gaige in my Vita run. I’m not really an expert so I wanted a good character for newcomers, and Axton is a solid choice. Though I hear all the characters are great in this game.

I actually have a few question since you’re more familiar with the series. Is any of the DLC separate content or is it all integrated into the main game or end game? And secondly, I have some Shift codes for golden keys or whatever that I entered (you can link to Shift account but not on the website directly, need to log into Shift on Switch, enter a code and then your Nintendo Account will link to Shift, after which you can paste codes using the website). Where do I pick up my loot?

@JaxonH For the golden keys you can access them once you get to sanctuary. There's a golden chest in the room with the fast travel. Also when using the golden keys the item you receive will be based on the level when you open the chest so, best to use a golden key when you just leveled up rather then the closer to the end of a level. Also follow Borderlands on social media (Twitter, Facebook etc.) And they will occasionally give out codes for golden keys.

As for the DLC certain ones should be done at certain points due to the level of loot they drop and level scaling. They are

Normal: Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty - levels 15 to 30. Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage - levels 15 to 30. Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt - levels 30 to 35. Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep - levels 30 to 35.

Once you hit True Vault Hunter mode all those DLC scale to level 50 and Ultimate Vault they scale to level 72 IIRC.

For the DLC Areas you have to select them from the fast travel stations. You won't get sent to them story wise.

Depending on what build you are doing there are some great quest reward escpecially in Captain Scarlette's. Torque's is ok but is mainly used for farming legendaries with the currency for that DLC. So that one can be skipped till True Vault Hunter mode.

Thanks for the detailed response. I have a whole page of codes screenshot from Reddit. Like 25-30.

When do the DLC quests become available to choose from the quest list? And when do the areas become available in the fast travel list?

I have no idea what build I’m doing yet. I really don’t know enough about the different types of builds and I don’t even know what play style suits me best. I typically don’t use sniper guns. Usually a good automatic, a shotgun and explosive barrel pistol are my go to weapons. And trying to find ones with status effects like damage against flesh. Of the 3 skill trees, I haven’t really looked them over. I do tend to prioritize health and armor, and because gyro makes the game a little harder without auto aim (but way more fun and rewarding) skills that help with shots that slightly miss would be good.

@JaxonH The DLC areas will be available once you get to Sanctuary from the fast travel there. Once you go to the area you will get the quests. I just don't remember the areas names off the top of my head but you can Google them for sure.

As for Axton builds there are several good ones but some are better suited for solo play and others are better for co-op.

Eh, motion controls means it's easy to look around and pick up items even if you take your thumb off the right stick.

@JaxonH

You mention difficulty, and I agree that the game is generally well balanced and that failure doesn't feel punishing, but it can also depend on your character class, build, and items you happen to find, which is a luck mechanic.

Oh, and don't ignore weapon elemental effects! Fire for unarmored opponents, electricity for shielded, corrosive for armored. They can make the early game easier and are critical for the late game. A gun with low base damage but high elemental damage is often better than a gun with high base damage and no elemental effects.

The Mountain Man

JaxonH

@Mountain_Man
I've only gotten the one Fire gun so far, and I just sold it because I've got pistols with more than double its raw damage now. But ya, I'm on the lookout for more elemental weapons. Maybe my gold key weapons will help with that when I get there.

About the gyro, I absolutely love it and it does make it easier to aim and look around, but I still need right analog to turn camera and help in tandem with the gyro, so it still requires constantly lifting thumb to hit Y, back to analog, lifting thumb to hit Y, back to analog. It really does feel great never needing to take your thumb off the right stick (most of the time anyways, still have to for jumping and grenades but that's not too often, not like constantly opening safes and picking up items, anyways). But whatever works for you. Still, if anyone does feel the same they should definitely give it a try at least

@Mountain_Man @JaxonH Don't go underestimating Slag, learn now how to use a slag weapon and switch to another elemental and switch back it will come in handy when you do Ultimate Vault Hunter mode. If you don't find a decent slag weapon then look for a slag attack you have within the skill trees. I know Axton has one and Maya so keep those in mind.

@Rosona ....and now I just read a couple of reviews for The Outer Worlds which looks good.
It's like waiting for a bus. Nothing for ages then three come along together.

Which ever one I get I'll wish I had got one of the others. 🤔

Go watch the Digital Foundry review of Outer Worlds. It looks atrocious. One of the worst Switch ports to date.

The Mountain Man

JaxonH

@Mountain_Man @zool
I watched the DF analysis and it’s not great, but at the same time, I watched ACG’s review afterward and while he did note the same issues and give it a “wait for a sale” rating, he was a lot more positive about it and he’s usually very critical of any switch game. Digital foundry has a way of taking something bad and making it look like nuclear holocaust.

That’s not to say I think it’s a high quality port because I think that’s not really up for debate, but I do trust ACG and he basically said it’s pretty good in handheld mode. Doesn’t look the best but, it’s decent. Definitely some frame rate issues at times and obviously you’ll have to make peace with the graphical downgrades but aside from that and a few hitches here and there it’s definitely a playable version if you want it handheld.

Personally my excitement has been shot for the game, but I don’t think it’s a complete disaster either.

@JaxonH @Rosona I have now watched DF, and it's not great, although some reviews are favourable, but for now it's off my list.
Something I find confusing with reviews and for me Witcher is an example..... a game can be praised simply because the makers managed to get it running on the Switch and that seems to trump graphics, frame rate etc. While other reviewers tell it like it is.....if you are desperate to play it on the go or the Switch is your only method of playing , buy the Switch version otherwise avoid it.

I think the best reviews come from gamers who have played the games. Like your post #86. Borderlands is on my list.

But then I just noticed Xcom2 and this type of strategy game is something I like, but does it trump. Boarderlands? 🤔

And then there is Paper Mario, already on order.

I am fairly impressed with what I have seen of the port for Outer Worlds, while yes it could definitely be better, especially when you compare it to the really decent 2k ports we have just had(sure they are technically last generation but still).
It certainly doesn't make me want to rush out and buy it, especially as it seemingly isn't that long really (despite never having the time to I still want my games to potentially be long, bit weird in a way but it is what it is) but It definitely hasn't got completely written off like Ark or others which just are terrible ports.

I get your point in regards to the Witcher, but I feel that has various factors as to why it is so highly regarded as a port. An some others don't so much.

Sounds to me like you have just encountered what we gamers always battle with, shiny new things and a growing or in my case horrific backlog.

Xcom generally is great, the recent port is certainly worse then the other 2k ports but it is undoubtedly a good game, although I have to recommend Fire Emblem Three Houses here, that should be the SRPG you play

Rosona

@zool
I just played Outer Worlds. My thoughts are basically, it plays great. Motion feels good. No issues there.

But the graphics are... not good. It reminds me of Wolfenstein 2 when it first released, before the patch that helped it look better. Except in this game you’re outside and they have some of the absolute worst looking grass which, combined with general blurriness (docked isn’t blurry, just ugly, but handheld is like Wolfenstein 2 when it launched, but looks worse because of the ultra low res vegetation)

That all being said, I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t having fun playing in handheld mode. But I don’t think I can recommend this one to anyone other than someone who knows what they’re getting and is ok with it for the handheld/gyro. It’s definitely not the caliber of the XCOM 2 port, but it’s an open world game so maybe it just wasn’t possible. I think it’s better to just play this one on Steam when it releases for the gyro. Then again if you can grab this one for 20 bucks down the line I think it might be worth it.
