Topic: Best Switch games for a returning Nintendo fan?

Posts 1 to 19 of 19

So I've been a Nintendo fan since the wii and ds days and grew up with games like metroid prime and zelda twilight princess. Anyway in 2017 after my wii u and 3ds collected dust I opted to buy a ps4 and pc instead of the switch (I think nobody could expect it to become such a huge success at the time). Now I'm back with a brand new switch and I want opinions from the core fans what are the best games to buy rn? I already bought Mario 3d all-stars and odyssey.

Metroid Dread's great!
I loved Smash Ultimate, although, that game won't get future fighters anymore, I'll still be playing it, but that's something to keep in mind.

Currently playing Link's Awakening DX.

Arisen

@Irfann Metroid's definitely on my radar to buy I'm in no rush to get it tho I'm not a fan of the 2d games. I should've mentioned I'm looking for hidden gems that haven't created much noise outside the core fanbase. Anyone interested in gaming probably knows what the next big Nintendo game is. For example, as I am a final fantasy fan I know that octopath traveller and chocobo gp are nintendo exclusives etc.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey are must haves. Everybody who owns a Switch should have these two games in their library. People who don't own a Switch should buy one to play these games.

I am really disappointed that people have not brought up Breath of the Wild yet. This is one of the best games ever made.

@Arisen That Mario+Rabbids game was good. I dont even like turn based combat, and I really liked this game. It's often on sale for $15-$20, if you want to wait for a sale.

Splatoon 2
(assume you already had Mario Kart 8 and Breath of the Wild on Wii U)

My most played non-Nintendo games:
Rocket League
Crash Team Racing
Trials Rising

@psychoBrew maybe the op owns it on the Wii u. I bought breath of the wild for the Wii u and bought a switch when odyssey came out.

@NCRunner That's a fair list I wouldn't mind buying xenoblade again on hd and the sequel after that. For indies most of them are already on other consoles but I will keep an eye on limited run editions. Thanks for the replies everyone I got more than enough for my wishlist

ARMS is my favorite game on Switch. Fun, unique concept for a fighting (boxing?) game. Makes great use of motion controls, but works perfectly with buttons too if that's not your thing. Only downside is, Nintendo still charges full price for an old game that doesn't have a lot of content. I definitely recommend it, but see if they give it a discount over the holidays.

This, 100%.

Both games had me completely hooked!

Couldn't think of a better starting point for a first-time Switch owner.

@Arisen obviously depends on the types of games you like, but i'd look at Steamworld Dig 2, it's in my top 5 games on the Switch.

If buying a physical copy of Breath of the Wild, import the Japanese release which includes the expansion content on the cartridge. English is also supported. A fantastic game that even those who have never played a Zelda game will love (and has ruined all open world fantasy games for me).

Actually most Nintendo gamers already had a suspicion that it would be successful it's was those that decide for themselves that it wasn't success that missed the Writing on the Wall. It was there all along since it was a console for everybody not just hardcore gamers but considering it fits for all audience and age group is why it had the success it had. Just looking at the library of games already is a good indicator of it's success. It doesn't have to beat PS sale or PC sales it's the software inventory that decides it's success.

But as for restart games. BOTW would be something to give it a run and then any Mario games assuming you get up to four players then it makes it more fun.

I can confirm this. BOTW has been the first Zelda I ever finished.
Stunning game which totally deserves the praise it's got.

To complete the holy trinity of Nintendo exclusives: Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Then as it has been mentioned already, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is a great game and somewhat a hidden gem. Many people are repulsed by the idea to mix the Mario universe with the one of the Rabbids. I'm one of those who thinks Ubisoft has done a marvellous job doing so.

Another good Switch exclusive would be Luigi's Mansion 3.

Then there are plenty of splendid indies on the machine, but I don't know which ones you've already played and since you're not a fan of 2D games this would massively restrain the list I would post.

Since January 2021 owner of my first real Nintendo "home" console.

Even if you aren’t into 2D Metroids, I’d recommend Dread. I was a Prime fan and also wasn’t into the 2D entries… Dread has changed that for me.

Also, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is a masterpiece. It’s a game you’ll never see mentioned on a top sellers list, but it’s genuinely the best 2D platformer Ive played in my entire life, and I’ve been playing the genre for 30 years.

Shin Megami Tensei V releases next week. That should be a good one if you’re into JRPGs.

Monster Hunter Rise is an amazing game and conducive to handheld or TV play.

Besides those, and the obvious Zelda BotW, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Smash Ultimate, there’s also Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2, Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Splatoon 2, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Cruis’n Blast, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Pikmin 3 Deluxe, Mario Maker 2, Super Mario 3D World, Zelda Link’s Awakening, Zelda Skyward Sword HD.

And a whole host of 3rd party games that are incredible on a hybrid system (Ori Will of the Wisps, Sniper Elite 4, Valkyria Chronicles 4, etc).

To jump back into that Nintendo magic, I don't think you can do better than Mario Odyssey.

Gosh what a fantastic game. Controls, objectives, "story," scripted moments... it's absolutely fantastic and frequently heartwarming. It just oozes with Nintendo quality and charm.
