@Octane It should be free........in an ideal world. However at the end of the day, they're businesses and they have to earn money to make various things like game development, staff, keeping the lights on at their HQs, servers (Even if they do or don't cost a lot), the next console successor/model research and development and so on, as well as making profits.

Nintendo had been kind up to this point making online gaming free, but like DLC its caught up "with the times" as many would accuse it not being so. And really they could have so easily price matched what XBox Gold and PSN currently cost but since they can't compete with some of the features like free retail games, its going to be the $20 for a year mark.

Its not all just business greed, your money is making sure things like Metroid Prime 4 actually happens like everyone keeps begging them to do. Can't happen out of thin air after all.

Is it a pain to pay for online? Yes. But that's why I take out annual subs. So I don't have to worry about it till next year and enjoy both the online and free games I'm getting from it. I don't currently own an XBONE but thanks to Games With Gold, I have about over 30 games already waiting for me once I do buy one. And just last year I finally got a PS3 so my library of PS4 and Vita games are beginning to grow as well (Yeah the online is free on PS3, but 6 games a month whether they're great or not so great and no repeats is a great way to build my library and discover games I've never played. To which with the price hike, I brought a 15 month sub for cheap on Prime day so again, won't have to worry about it for a year).

Of course, there PC, 3DS, Wii U and PS3 if you really don't agree with paid online....

@Octane Save files never really get any larger than two digits... in Megabits.
You will have to have literal thousands of AAA games before worrying about that.

@Seacliff My MK8D save is 141 megabytes. BotW is 64MB. Everything else is under 10, though. I do agree it hardly seems like a pressing concern.

@Zyrac I did some research. I believe BOTW is actually 128MB and Minecraft takes as much as 2GB.
Okay, so maybe not literal thousands, but still in the several hundreds unless someone fills their library with Minecraft clones.

Some hacker will probably figure out a way to transfer save files files before Nintendo does.

How in the fudge in 2019 does Splatoon 2 not save data to the cloud? I just returned a Lite and got a Switch V2 only to see there's no data backed up and I have to start all over again. Holy annoying.
