Topic: A Hypothetical Question

I'm betting Nintendo will release a Switch Pro alongside Zelda next March. But it doesn't matter what I think. Here's a hypothetical question for you. Let's say Nintendo does release a new version of the Switch, be it a new SKU or Switch 2. Let's further say that the new Zelda is exclusive to the new Switch, for whatever reason. In this scenario, the current Switch could not run the new Zelda.

First of all, how pissed would you be?
Second, would you buy a new Switch and play it anyway? What is the limit to your opposition to capitalist practice that you would boycott a new Nintendo console and new Zelda (also hypothetically assuming you really want to play it).

I wouldn't really be that annoyed, depending on how much of an upgrade a theoretical switch pro actually is. I still got my Switch from release day so the time for an upgrade would be appropriate for me personally, although of course this would totally be a ***** move.
In short: I would still get the new Zelda and console, probably with no more than a silent sigh as a complain

Edit. forgot about the second part of the question. So i guess the limit of my patience would be an extreme step up in pricing, literally no upgrade at all to the hardware compared to OLED and/or an announcement three months after that there will be a Pro Version for the Switch Pro Version

The next console they release will almost certainly be Switch 2 imo. We have all sides of the Switch spectrum covered now: cheap and underpowered in Lite, regular in.... well, regular and better and more expensive in OLED. I would be shocked then if the next thing wasn't the next big console gen. Keep in mind though: I don't think we'll be getting it for a looooong while. Early 2024 at the earliest is what I'd say personally.

@Gryffin
As long the next Switch can provide better performance for 3rd party games, I will be happy. I might consider Switch 2 to play ACNH for making my 2nd island.
Also, I have no interest with Zelda games.
I don't buy Nintendo machines to play Zelda games.
I'm different.

@Gryffin Another way to look at it, every console has gotten only one new 3d zelda, except n64. On top of that, since 2019 they've been saying botw2 is coming to the Switch. If there is new hardware, I think it's safe to say botw2 will come to both Switch and new Switch, like botw came to Wii U and Switch. Also, botw2 was originally supposed to be dlc that was supposed to come to the Switch.

If there is new hardware with more power, I'm getting it. I like nintendo and modern games, and I'm tired of missing out on modern games, or getting games with massive downgrades. On top of that, I welcome a tv-only console option. Playing handheld isn't as immersive for me, and I never wanted it. Although, I totally understand why the hybrid console model has been part of the Switch's success.

To answer your question, though, if botw2 is exclusive to the new hardware, I won't be bothered, as explained in the paragraph above.

(I have a friend I can sell my oled to, if new hardware comes out. They still haven't played Mario Odyssey, BOTW, Splatoon, Mario Kart 8)

@WoomyNNYes I agree that it will definitely come to Switch, just like BOTW did for Wii U. That's how I played it, actually. But that's why I'm curious to see what people think of it weren't to release for Switch, because they've promised it since the beginning. It would be similar to Cyberpunk 2077, except they definitely should have cancelled the PS4/XBO versions. It would have been worth risking people's ire to deliver a game exclusively for next gen that actually functioned.

@Fizza What do you think the chances are that they'll release a new console type entirely? Iwata was always trying to innovate. I think it's possible they'll go back to having a handheld line, aka the Switch, and also launch a dedicated console with a new play type. I think a Nintendo VR device is very possible in the near future.

I can't believe I'm bothering to chime in on this, cos it just seems like an attempt to promote negative energy even when there's no justification to - it's a hypothetical that is not going to materialise (i.e. it wouldn't be exclusive to Switch 2) But... it's write this or do some work so I guess I'm writing this.

Firstly, I wouldn't be especially pissed. Sure, it was announced with a teaser that opens with the Switch click, indicating it's going to be a Switch game, so it would be a bit of a let down. But BotW is the greatest adventure game I've ever played, not even close, so if anyone has earned themselves a bit of leeway on that sort of practice, it's Nintendo and the Zelda team.

Secondly, I've got more than enough Switch games to play, so I wouldn't feel compelled to buy Day 1. Og Switch was compelling because it was the realisation of the dream - full console level game experience on a portable - so I bought it Day 1. Switch 2 would have to be something additionally compelling to force me to buy Day 1 - just having BotW2 as an exclusive and being a step up in power probably wouldn't be compelling enough for me, I'd wait until I could save some money on the deal.

To boycott completely? I mean... there's always the Used market and the tail end of a generation when you can grab a bargain, so I really can't ever imagine boycotting completely forevz, that just seems impossible. But I guess if Nintendo started pushing a pro Boris Johnson/Trump/Putin style agenda then I'd probably steer clear. Digital-only would certainly put me off for a long while too, but if the experience is good enough I'd probably swallow it eventually. But **** anyone who thinks BJ/Trump/Putin approach is the way to do things.

@Gryffin First, it's highly unlikely Nintendo will release the Switch successor next year. More like 2024. New hardware is used to reinvigorate slumping hardware sales. Nintendo is still selling 20 million Switches a year.

Why would Nintendo introduce new hardware while the Switch is still hotter than PS5 or XSX? It wouldn't make sense business wise. No, if Nintendo introduce "new" hardware anytime between now and 2024 it'll be yet another iteration of the current Switch. I assume an OLED Lite is coming soon.

Second, my eagerness to purchase the Switch's successor would depend largely on how Nintendo handles backwards compatibility between the Switch and the next platform. Everyone assumes their Switch games will transition smoothly to the next platform, but that isn't a guarantee. Nintendo could easily ask customers to build their library from scratch again.

Typically, the market-leading platform holder begins their next console cycle with a huge amount of arrogance, resulting in decisions that are usually not consumer-friendly.

Doubt. Switch with LABO goggles proved how easy it was. They basically seemed to just be able to flick a switch to make BotW fully VR compatible, and **** what anyone says, that was a fantastic experience getting to roam BotW Hyrule in VR. My hope is that Nintendo will leverage the Switch versatility with the next hardware, with a screen that has increased resolution to improve the VR experience, and that they give us Mario Kart VR, Kirby VR, Zelda VR, Metroid Prime VR, etc. etc. - they don't need a separate device when the hybrid tablet and some goggles does the job, saving the customer a lot of money.

@Anti-Matter I've been thinking back to why I choose a given console.

The first console I purchased was the GameCube in 2003. It was the Sunshine bundle. I have it and still play it to this day. I'm playing through Star Fox Adventures now.

I bought a DS to play Mario Kart. Probably there were other games too, but it was Mario Kart DS that convinced me. Excellent game. And on that subject, I played 7 for the 3DS for the first time this week. I'm astounding by how good it is. Every single level is great, and I haven't even played them all yet. I bought the cartridge off my nephew.

I never owned a Wii of my own. I borrowed others. Played Twilight Princess and Galaxy of course. I still love Wii Sports Tennis and Golf. I played the demo for tennis at E3 2005, and it blew me away. Jumping forward a bit, I still don't own a Switch. Nintendo Switch Sports is the closest I've come to wanting one. I intend on waiting for the new Zelda to buy one, which is a reason I'm personally hoping they release a new SKU with it. (Oh, I did play Super Mario Odyssey on my sister's Switch, which was fine.)

I bought my PS3 in 2008 or so. I can't remember what eventually sold me on it. Played some great games on there though. It broke down a few years ago. I still have it though and might try to get it repaired some day.

What finally sold me on the Wii U was Mario Kart as well. The most under appreciate console ever released. I almost bought a second one last week as a backup. I play Wii games on it now too. I'm playing Dead Space Extraction right now. So good.

I bought my PS4 slim a couple of years ago. I really like coming to a generation late. What finally convinced me was Starlink. I still haven't beaten it yet though, haha.

I bought a 2DS a few months ago. Like I said, I'm late to the party. But I needed one to play Samus Returns. I decided to play through the entire Metroid series. And thanks to the Wii U, I'm almost finished. I'm taking a break from Metroid for a minute though, so I haven't picked up Samus Returns quite yet. I am playing SteamWorld Dig 2 though. I also committed myself to a bunch of eShop and DSi titles before they shut down credit card use the other day. I'm playing my first Monster Hunter. 4 Ultimate. I've never understood the appeal of the series, but now I definitely do.

Now I want to hear your story!

Wow...we got a alot of debbie downers don't we. For me 2023 march is the most likely release date sine it seem to correspond to 2017 BOTW release and Switch console release. Why 2024 is because someone got butte hurt here and that their choice. The longer it waits the sooner PS5 will take over and I think that's what some of debbie downers here want.

Wouldn’t be mad, let’s be honest Nintendo follows a vary Sammy pattern, so using that it’s easier to predict what they will do next, that also means new console or models, a leak or two doesn’t hurt as well.

What I’m saying is, if they release one soon, it wouldn’t, surprise me, maybe a little bit.

@Gryffin
I started my gaming since from NES era during 90's era when I was kid. I played PS1 games for the first time in June 1998 despite using pirated copies and modded PS1 machine. Dance Dance Revolution 3rd Mix, FF VIII, FF IX, Pepsiman, Bishi Bashi Special 2, Harvest Moon Back to Nature, Punky Skunk, etc shaped my teenhood from PS1 games.

I played PS2 games in June 2002 with pirated game copies again and modded PS2 machine since it was the only machine we can play during that time. K-1, more Dance Dance Revolution games, Para Para Paradise, DrumMania, FF X, FFX-2, FF XII, Bomberman games, etc are the games that shaped my college age during 2000's era.

I played Wii for the first time in June 2009 after I was sold by My Sims Wii. Same case as PS2, at that time I played with pirated Wii games and soft modded Wii machine since there was no way to play with original things during that time. Games like My Sims, Dance Dance Revolution (again), Wii Sports, Wii Music, Wii Party, Harvest Moon Tree of Tranquility, Cooking Mama, etc were shaped my young adult age (20's years old).

I started my new journey to play Original games on 16 July 2013 from FF XIII PS3 and on 28 August 2013 from my first original game purchase on 3DS (LEGO CITY UNDERCOVER The Chase Begins).
And since then, I stopped playing with pirated games and modded machines. Eventually, I sold all my modded machines and donated all my pirated games to other game shop. I started again from zero.
I started to get Original NDS games in March 2014 from Final Fantasy III NDS.
I re-experienced again from Original Wii games and machine during March 2015.
I bought Wii U in April 2016 with Mario Kart 8, LEGO CITY UNDERCOVER, etc.

Since year 2017, there were some machines I bought such as NDS Lite in January 2017, New 3DS XL USA in February 2017, PS2 Slim Japan in April 2017, Nintendo Switch V1 in December 2017.

I bought PS4 Slim in April 2018, New 3DS LL Japan in November 2018 since I want to play other region of 3DS games legally.

I bought PSP Slim 3000 in February 2019, PS2 Fat USA in August 2019, PS3 Slim in December 2019.

I bought New 3DS XL PAL (Fire Emblem edition) in June 2020 so I could play All 3 different region of 3DS games legally.

I bought a lot of different video games machines since I like to play their games so currently I have collected 7 Nintendo games (GBA, NDS, 3DS, Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, Switch) and 5 PlayStation games (PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP).

And I will add more video games machines from XBOX 360 in this May 2022 and Original XBOX in December 2022 according to my plan. Also, will start to buy PS5 games for future investment in July 2022 while waiting for PS5 Slim with cheaper price.
