The question remains: why reveal Switch 2 now, when the direct is three months away? Well, I have a theory. April 2nd might seem like a random date, but it's actually right around the end of the fiscal year. I theorize the upcoming direct was when Nintendo was originally going to announce the Switch 2, to keep their promise of revealing Switch 2 in the fiscal year while delaying the announcement as much as possible. However, with all the leaks and rumors, Nintendo decided it was best to just reveal the console now and save all the juicy bits (games, the mouse functionality, the C button, ect.) that weren't leaked for the original date.

More time for third party publishers to develop and announce software for the new platform.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,533 games (as of December 8th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)

@Eel
Also, 1 April 2025 this year is still the second day of Eid-ul Fitr day.
Picking 2 April 2025 after Eid-ul Fitr day was a right choice.

No good deed
Will I do
AGAIN...!!!

Most people since yesterday saying 3 months till NS2 NDirect, but that would be around April 16th, so actually better saying is 2,5 months since yesterday!
Plus my main speculation is for that 3rd party game makers could add NS2 logo to their trailers instead of regular Nintendo logo like Yooka-Replaylee did it when they announced that game!

So that 3rd parties can begin announcing Switch 2 games, and the 3rd party support for the Switch 2 is going to be out of this world.

Imagine, until the April Direct, for games such as Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur's Gate 3, Tales of Arise, and Call of Duty to be announced for release on 2025, or even unreleased ones, such as AC Shadow and Monster Hunter Wilds.

Just imagine how strong of a launch Switch 2 may have with the huge 3rd party support it will receive. Drop a couple of delicious first party tittles and it's going to be absolute pandemonium!

Sure you don't mean 2 months, 2 weeks, and 2 days. Notice a pattern?

This theory doesn't really work given that the last day of the financial year would've been March 31st. If they had held out till April 2nd it would've meant they'd have to announce that to investors that it had been delayed. Which is a whole other can of worms. I expect that April 2nd for the main Direct had been their intent for a while

Also I don't think the trailer being when it was has been in reaction to leaks either. If they had intended to avoid leaks they would've announced in October last year. They didn't. Once they didn't announce then the next reasonable time was last week given November/December and the first couple of weeks of January are generally dead air

The timeline here makes sense for a May/June release

@skywake The timing of the reveal and 2nd April Direct does seem to suggest that any third party not to be featured in the Direct will be able to produce/update trailers and get social media and PR making announcements.

@gcunit someone is like me aka loves to count stuff accurately. But when comes not counting in months then I go to days + hours + minutes! xD
Edit: I was planning to save money monthly to update my console day 1 now after NS2 gotta revealed, because I own NS1 V1 aka the one who survives on battery less then other models from 2018 end of the March bought from person and that person bought at 2017 July 11th, so. Plus my NS1 V1 now has 2 different line cracks on protective glass only from bottom to top, but they most time unnoticeable when gaming and even when doing other stuff on it it's barely noticeable, so it is ok for me. But now I realized if we be getting Pokémon Gen 10 at November 2026 7-8 days before Black Friday then we highly likely will get edition of console for those games which I kinda would want a bit more then regular NS2! Plus all dual copy Pokémon Games on NS1 gotta console editions: Let's GO Pikachu & Eevee NS1 V1, Sword & Shield NS1 Lite, Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl NS1 Lite, Scarlet & Violet NS1 OLED! So now I debating with myself to maybe wait until then or buy regular NS2 on day 1?!

@Kirbyo We all can speculate the timing or YT people telling how they found out the date but Nintendo will never tell us until the April 2 why they are doing this. Remember March 2017 was Switch release just consider how close the time line here is March to April is back to back and if this is a fiscal release date for financial reports to investors that would seem reasonable to boost Nintendo stocks and tell investors we have plenty of Switch 2 to produce and more on the way to their 20+ mil consoles to be release.

March 31st is the end of the FY for Nintendo and most of the businesses in Japan. That day and the beginning of the new FY (Apr 1) is a busy, ceremonious time in Japan. It’s the beginning of the Japanese school year as well.

So Apr 2nd is as soon as Nintendo could possibly hope to do the reveal in the new fiscal year. They must have wanted a clean break between Switch Uno and Dos. I’m willing to bet Switch Deux preorders will open up on April 3rd.
