@CaleBoi25 i like the idea that only my beef with bolt is notable
that's not sarcasm i kinda like that. somehow the way i whine at him is more special than the way several others here do/used to.

I don't quite agree about 3D Kirby being a substitute for 3D Mario though - certainly not anymore than DK Bananza is a substitute for it (and I agree with you on the latter - although it's the same dev team, it is no substitute). The gameplay on show - while breaking new ground - did feel distinctly "Kirby".

I think there's room for both 3D Kirby and 3D Mario next year.

Well certainly, Mario and Kirby are different IPs for a reason, so an open world 3D Mario would be different from an open world 3D Kirby. But I also feel like they'd have a bit more similarities than Bananza. Bananza puts a lot more emphasis on terrain destruction and combat and doesn't have a lot of platforming or navigating obstacles. That's the main thing that puts me off to this "Bananza is your 3D Mario" rhetoric. 3D Kirby, it's still not entirely the same but I feel like it'll be a step further in that direction from Bananza. Kirby isn't exactly heavy on platforming and clearing obstacles either, but it tends to have a bit more of that than Bananza.

I think the main thing that 3D Mario can bring that these other two can't is a lot of the fancy acrobatics (for example, more intricate platforming techniques like long jump, triple jump, wall jump, etc.). That tends to be what makes 3D Marios distinct. If the next 3D Mario continues to play into that the same way that games like 64, Sunshine, and Odyssey did, then I think it can feel distinct enough from Bananza and World Beyond.

It was an alright direct. After seeing OoT the day before (which looks great) I didn't feel as much need for a ton in today's direct.

That said, Metroid and Kirby look very nice.

And there were some good things we already knew about like Mega Man.

Humorously, my bingo card failed at getting any bingos because there were no farming games in the direct and no Just Dance 😆

@FishyS Isn't Disney Dreamlight Valley a farming sim to some degree at least?

I remembered we were talking earlier in this thread about an almost 40 year pattern of mario games always being released in Autumn (technically Sep - Dec). I guess that pattern is now dead.

Not really sure, but the direct was advertising a mermaid/sailing DLC and they didn't show anything like farming. 🤔

New Metroid
New surprisingly intriguing looking Kirby
Good looking remake of Romancing SaGa 3
Switch Sports Resort continues to look good
Surprise Metal Slug Collection

Basically, this was a really good Direct with tons of nice stuff.

Well, Palia and DDV both fall into the "cozy" genre, and although neither is specifically a farming game, they both feature Gardening (and Palia has Ranching as well; idk enough about DDV to comment there).

@CaleBoi25 Palia went by so quick I forgot it was in the direct.

It's a rarity that there's no late September/early October Nintendo game (physical version of XC2 doesn't really count) but judging by the September Direct, it seems like 2026 is one of those years. It's fair enough considering Fortune's Weave is probably over 100 hours long but still a notable situation.

@FishyS what’s baffling to me (and correct me if I’m wrong) is that the Mario Galaxy Movie came out earlier this year and we’ve not had a single Mario game released or announced since then.

I guess some would count Yoshi and Star Fox as related…but this really feels like an unusual Mario drought tbh.

@Buizel Tennis Fever, Mario Wonder DLC and Yoshi are a somewhat normal amount of Mario for the year. It's just extremely rare (this is essentially the first time since the 1980s) for there not to be a mario-adjacent game out later in the year. I wouldn't count star fox, but even that was first half of the year. And yeah, two general directs in a row with no new Mario unless you count free mario kart update. Quite unusual. I wonder if 2027 or 2028 will be drowning in mario because that's just how the development time lined up.

@Buizel I see it that Nintendo saw more value this time in filling up the window before and during the movie cycle with Mario universe stuff than afterwards. If you look back to the lead up to the 2023 movie the only Mario universe stuff was Sparks of Hope, some DLC/free updates and a few NSO releases.

WoomyNNYes

Wow, so no Just Dance stuff in the direct? Even though the Sept 10 Just Dance date supposedly sparked suspicion of Nintendo's Direct.

CaleBoi25

@WoomyNNYes Honestly, good point lol. I forgot that was the initial spark that set off this round of speculation.

WoomyNNYes

@CaleBoi25 I know, right!?😆

After seeing how much my nieces loved playing Just Dance on Xbox with the connect Cam, which tracks/watches your body's movements (to me, it looked like the best way to play Just Dance, and better than holding a joycon while dancing), I'm amazed Nintendo hasn't capitalized on selling Just Dance with a camera to sell more Switch 2 cameras. I'm thinking it's never going to happen now.

CaleBoi25

@WoomyNNYes 💯💯💯it's crazy for sure! That's the exact sort of game that makes sense with the camera. But no, let's add checks notes voice controls to Oatchi in Pikmin 4's brand new Pikmin Bloom-looking crossover Switch 2 Edition lol

@Buizel I think the rumor about an internal delay to 3D Mario is true. That explains so much of the weirdness going on here. Why it's been this long without a new one. Why it missed the first two year window it normally hits. Why it missed the 40th anniversary and Mario Galaxy movie promotion. I think they wanted it in this window and they just couldn't get it ready in time so they relied on smaller games for the 40th anniversary.

@FishyS @Grumblevolcano Yeah I’m not saying there’s not enough Mario, I just think the timing feels a bit off - especially with two Directs in a row with basically nothing new Mario.

Then again, what are they to announce? I think with Switch Sports on the horizon it’s not the time to announce the next sports title, and I wasn’t expecting anything RPG-wise.

@Bolt_Strike I suspect that’s the case. Eh, it is what it is imo. I’d rather have 3D Mario when it’s ready than something rushed.

All of these Warriors announcements are getting super annoying. I'm going to rage if we get Fortune's Weave Warriors.
