@skywake All very fair points. I guess we'll just need to wait and see. I do wonder if Nintendo may want to use Shiver to scale down a few Switch 2 games for the Switch that would be more difficult to pull off, sorta akin to how they tasked NST with bringing Super Mario Maker and Captain Toad to 3DS. But I think they're going to really focus on ensuring the new system has a healthy lineup of true exclusives early on, instead of having most games be cross-generation. It's worth noting that we have evidence the Switch successor is incorporating a few more buttons as well (mainly on the back of the Joy-Con) as well as features like a microphone - depending on how they're used, that might render some games incompatible even if they could in theory be downgraded for Switch. Nintendogs in particular seems like it'd fit that criteria

@PikaPhantom
Probably depends on what the game is and how quick Switch 2 starts to gain momentum. I'm not entirely sure if they'd bother scaling games down from Switch 2 for Switch but I could imagine certain games continuing to target a Switch spec. The more niche, casual and easy to run the game is? The more likely it'll release just on Switch

To make a bit of a point if I was to classify Nintendo's 2023 release in terms of where I think they would've landed if Switch 2 had launched in early 2023? Tears of the Kingdom and Pikmin 4 are surely Switch 2 only. At most in that alternate timeline TotK becomes a cross-gen release with Switch 2 getting the clearly better version. Super Mario Wonder and Super Mario RPG probably land on Switch still, presumably with the later getting a more stable framerate on Switch 2. Metroid Prime Remastered.... possibly still Switch also... possibly... I'm not entirely convinced of that one. Presumably said alternate reality also gets Mario Kart 9 as Switch 2 only instead of the Mario Kart 8 booster course and I would expect a fair bit more third party interest

@FishyS Counting DK as an active franchise is questionable though hopefully the June Direct changes that by announcing a DK game. Also a Brain Age game released for Switch in January 2020 (Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training for Nintendo Switch), it just didn't release in the US.

@Croctopus My guess is that Nintendo asked him for Super Smash Bros on Switch’s Successor. This makes me hopeful that Sakurai will return for Super Smash Bros. 6.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be shocked if if Nintendo asked a little while ago and the game is currently in early/pre-development. There’s always the possibility this will could essentially work as a SSBU Deluxe, or at least use the same engine.

I don't even care with smash bros games.
The next Switch 2 should have ARMS 2 or something like Go Vacation with better QoL.

Hah, yeah, I know I was stretching the term with Donkey Kong. We at least have 2 games with Donkey Kong in the title even though one is not actually a Donkey Kong game and one was a pretty no-frills port. But tbh I sort of count the movie too... being one of the main characters in an extremely popular movie shows DK is very much alive and also definitely not forgotten by Nintendo.

And I totally forgot about Kawashima's Brain Training, thank you. Considering the smaller franchises I didn't put on the list such as Endless Ocean, it's kind of impressive how many active franchises Nintendo juggles and exists on Switch. Even if there are a few notable absences.

@Nintoz technically what they said so far could translate to either 'detect definitely this week' or 'direct definitely not this week'. 😛

@skywake I think you're underestimating how many games fans of more casual IPs buy. Sure they might not be buying Zeldas, Metroids, or maybe even Marios, but if they have a switch lying around genres like Visual Novels, Party Games, Fitness Games, and some of the more casual focused platformers (Peach, Yoshi, Kirby), and the oddballs like Tomodachi, Nintendogs, etc all likely draw a significant portion of their sales from people who picked up the system for AC or Pokemon. The genres sold to those sort of fans may differ, but I haven't seen any evidence anecdotal or otherwise that they're generally not buying other games at all. In fact, the games sold to hardware ratio is ridiculously high on Switch compared to most other systems historically, which would suggest that Pokemon / AC fans did generally go on to buy other games.

And the Switch Lite is hardware. Sure Metroid / Zelda are better for moving the top tier hardware, but the topic was hardware in general. And interestingly, this generation the low tier Switch Lite didn't take off anywhere near as well as the OLED. A ton of fans who got Pokemon / AC had to have gotten the OG / OLED Switch, just looking at how software sales for those games outpaced Switch Lite hardware sales.

@OctolingKing13 Pyoro basically just said 'where is Nintendo Direct?' in Japanese. People are trying to figure out if that means the direct is this week and Pyoro is about to give details or if it is a taunt towards the other leakers who claimed it is Tuesday, saying they are wrong.

Normally people would guess in the comments and Pyoro would confirm by liking the correct responses but since Twitter has removed the ability to see Pyoro's likes.... who knows.

I don’t think I’d classify Pokemon buyers as “casual.”

I think “casual” just means people who don’t prioritize gaming a ton of time every week, borderline might not even touch their Switch for a week at a time. I’m sure some of them buy a decent number of games, but it’s weird to try and argue that the majority of casual gamers buy as many games as people like us.

You really have to come up with some tortured rhetoric and logic to make that seem true. It’s just logical that people who don’t prioritize gaming won’t buy as many games.

Nintoz

@FishyS I think when he says stuff like this it's usually with the tone of 'Where is Nintendo Direct? 😉'

I think Pyoro's got to a point now where he'll only make a tweet (or a chirp) when absolutely necessary at the right time. He wouldn't want to let down the army of fans he gained I suppose!

@Nintoz maybe, but Pyoro also really likes to taunt other leakers who are wrong. In fact their other tweet today was doing nothing but taunting Midori.

@Novamii Midori was (apparently) some American dude pretending to be a Japanese woman. Still a leaker obviously. Anyways, lots of real life drama intersecting online personas with some mild doxxing and harassment and that account doesn't exist anymore. I didn't follow all the details, but it sounds not fun.

The conversation comes up with Pyoro because some people think they are also pretending to be Japanese. Not that it really matters.

Pretty sure Pyoro's tweet means something is happening this week, normally when they inform us something isn't happening they say so directly and in a reply rather than in its own tweet. I daresay its time to get hyped.
