I started with Cai, and his route felt like the one designed best to start with. I've then been swapping each time I bumped into another Flame Lord, so I've done Theodora, back to Cai for a stretch, Leda and now finally Dietrich almost 15 hours in.
I started with Dietrich, and I feel like I'm going to play his route to completion before I start any of the others honestly. Don't know if I'll ever swap between all three or not, since part of me feels like it's probably better to leave the points of connection up to mystery until I can give a route my full attention.
Just now got to the first taste of proper free-time, and I genuinely think its being handled pretty well. There's a lot of things to do in the capital right now, and I love how large it is compared to the Monastery in Three Houses.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
@TerribleTerabytes I started with House Lamine because I knew I wouldn’t like Dietrich as a character and I learned the hard way to go in with the characters I don’t care about when the game is fresh so I can pay attention to the lore. And what lore it is. Already I have a ton of questions, some items confirmed and my distaste towards Agartha is at a rolling boil. I do think I am going to exit NL for a few months while I work on this… I haven’t been this excited to take a game’s story apart in years. I will do Cai next and then flip a coin on the final two.

Why do some conversations come to a point where you have to push a button to continue- there’s been some with choices but it’s weird when you have no choice.
I picked Theodora's route first, just like I picked Edelgard first in Three Houses back then, cos I'm just way more drawn to tough women in power than your typical shonen/shoujo protagonists. And I gotta say, Theodora's Japanese voice actor is doing a great job in projecting her strength and authority. I wonder if the English actor is just as good?
@Polvasti It appears as if they're doing an ethnicity thing based on the fake countries in game being very similar to real world ones. It appears they decided to make those dressed as Chinese to represent the people of the egg. Dagda is Rome, there seems to be a Spanish analogy. Fodlan is cast as the Vatican in keeping with 3H.
I just want to say to those who are attacking me for having an opinion that isn't lining up.
If the game isn't showing me how to do stuff 20 hours in, isn't that a fault with the game?
Just because I am being critical doesn't mean I'm trolling. I am a big fan of tactics games and I loved 3H and this game isn't doing the same.
I didn't even touch on how swiss cheese the story is. Game keeps dropping you in days later and people are mid conversation and their development happens off screen. In 3H it actually feels like people slowly open up.
I'm sorry that game was better because Persona plus Fire Emblem is more polished.
Everyone is welcome to their opinion and I am as well. I'm very disappointed. I would hope that people understand that. This feels like The Last Jedi to me.
@Polvasti The English VA are the major ones from Japanese dubs through out the years. You can catch yourself heading them and going... That's Piccolo! Or hmmm I know her from something and I can place it.
It's quality VA. I really should change over to Japanese. I Skip the lines mostly because they're delivered way slower than I can read so I often hear 60% of a line before skipping except when the acting or animation is particularly interesting.
It's a positive aspect of the game though, even if it's very anime trope laden. Everything about sound is top notch in my measure. The soundtrack is easily the best part of the game.
@Ryu_Niiyama The game is structured to flip between them in every chapter. I think it's the intended way to play. Strangely, Dietrich was my third choice and I think I like the mechanics of his path the most. Esmeralda is a fun side character as well and it has the most to do with 3H. If I could have pushed them at Nintendo, I would have forced them to do the switching. Play every character simultaneously day by day so the plot is more seamless. They're going for the piece it together route and it makes it feel too fragmented.
Dietrich would also be the best main main character to bridge the two games. It's definitely the one with all the Fodlan connective tissue. His story is pulling the game up out of the crapper a bit. I honestly think I picked the worst character to go first with in the dancer. Although her story is fine, I feel it was the worst mechanically and gave me a very bad first impression. I'm starting Cai RN.but I've played a lot of this game and fell asleep twice in the very early morning.
I stand by this game being around a 65 in rating and hoping it improves. I think people are getting mad at me because they think 64 was a bad score. But I use the whole 100 points. If Chrono Trigger is a 100, why would this game be anywhere near that? Likewise a game like Custer's Revenge would be a 1. 50 is true average. This game is still better than average. But the disappointment is that 3H was a 93 to me.
That is why I sound so negative. Because this is not approaching the same dopamine hit, narrative hit, or fun factor.
@Misima Hi. As I would like to play the game and find out for myself what is happening I’m just letting you know I stopped reading all that after the first sentence.
I appreciate you putting in the effort but I am enjoying going in absolutely blind. If I said something wrong because I haven’t gotten far enough to know differently, I’m good with that. I’ll be back in a few months to argue lore with everyone.

I wish the game confirmed when you want to leave a dungeon. I just have that addiction to doing everything and finding everything and it’s maddening the game doesn’t pop up a yes no dialog when it pops up a ton of dialogs with a single button interrupting conversations even when you told it to run those automatically.
I managed to rack up over 600 hours on 3H, and Fortune's Weave has already claimed my #1 Spot.
...not even close.
Once you adapt to the pacing, the huge scale, and get the rhythm down... everything about this game just feels so Perfect. I cannot even believe that I'm typing this, but this might be my favorite video game EVER!!!
I was kinda worried with how handholdy the first couple of chapters are on each route that when those safety rails come off I'd be straight back to Three Houses obfuscation, but I think this game does a significantly better job of delivering information clearly to the player to allow them to set manageable goals, and while I'm sure things will probably clamp down a little more later on, I am around roughly chapter 5 to 6 in Act 1 on each route now (which is between 1 and 2 games matches on each route), I feel I have always been given enough resource between each story beat to achieve everything I can achieve in that time. Probably the hardest of all of them is Theodora as there is an element of RNG to the materials you find in the world, so you may have to burn a few extra turns to hit your quote to send off your deliveries and get that renown up, but even then, I haven't yet ran out of turns and failed to achieve the goals I set in that cycle.
Whoa, I am impressed you guys have gotten so far, I’m only on my first hero and it seemed a bit hand holdy but when you finally unlock the turn based preparation for your big fight it’s such a big info dump that I want someone to hold my hand again!
I...I dont understand the World Map. I went out thinking I could find enemy strongholds to gain levels but Cai can't access a lot of things. I tried returning to Dagsion, but I had gone so far that I would've wasted all of my turns getting back. So I did Auto activities to at least get something out of it, but I feel like I completely wasted my time. Is it me, or does that feel like trial and error? I don't understand why simply moving around the World map burns entire turns. That's a bit ridiculous.
@TerribleTerabytes I'm not trying to tell you to suck eggs, so I'm sorry if you already know this, but side quests in Dagsion are most of the time skirmishes or dungeons on the board map, so picking those up will give you clear reference points as to where to go on the map. You can see how far you can reach in a turn before you commit and that distance is static so you can manually plot out how many turns it will take to get there and back. You can also set reminders on the calender for events you're interested in, and it will give you the exact number of turns to that event (as days are split into four turns I think? So it's not just about getting to the right day but the right time). I've also found on each story mission refreshes they seem to give me near enough the perfect number of turns and side quests so I can clear everything comfortably, but not be left with so much time I'm lost.
@Pizzamorg I just started out, I'm still in tutorial land. I was revealing parts of the World map hoping I'd find something but it was just a lot of dead ends. What I wish the game told me is that once you leave Dagsion, you have to burn a turn to go back inside. Not wanting to do that, I went exploring but basically just ended up burning the 32 days given before the first exam. I felt really dumb. But thankfully, the battle with Goliath wasn't that hard. But I'm worried I missed important side quests and people I could've recruited.
@TerribleTerabytes you're not the first person to have this criticism and it makes me wonder if I'm autistic 🤣 in three houses I found the loop really hard to follow cause everything was segmented, to the point where I had to constantly rely on the online mode to see what other people did to work out what I was supposed to be doing next.
This is much more intuitive to I guess just how my brain is wired? Cause you work outwards and inwards and the loop is largely the same on all routes.
You scoop up all of the side quests in Dagsion, you do said side quests, return to town hand them in, level up your renown, you pull up the map to see what units can be recruited at your current renown level, use the resources you got from those side quests to plow them with gifts, go into the next story mission and do it all again.
Recruits are even uniquely tuned on each route to make sure the player has the best odds possible to recruit the right units for the upcoming main quest encounter so you've always got the right squad, too.
