RPGsite also gives it 8, but I quite like the review considering the detail and everything it goes into (and still does make me interested in the game)
@darkfenrir want people to remember this. the score itself isn't bad and it would be very silly to suggest they dropped the ball in part because of the score.
it's moreso a lack of detail and (potentially) picking the wrong person to discuss it. though, arguably, maybe you should want reviews from people that aren't immediately biased towards that exact style of game...
@squiddu-real yeah... That's really understandable. You want the review to dig into the game properly and not just whatever xD
Honestly FE Fortune's Weave review reads better for me than Another Eden Begins review on RPGsite, despite the latter getting 10, compared to FE getting 8. Just neater and more compelling
They did indeed drop the ball... This is a big release, in the holiday window for Switch 2, with minimal coverage on a Nintendo fansite.
As mentioned before, NL only hyped Fortune's Weave following a trailer. Meanwhile, there was a plethora of additional info that was never discussed on this site.
Mathematically, no one is suggesting that 8 out of 10 is awful. Although, the fact that outside sources have rated the game higher with far more enthusiasm speaks for itself.
Frankly, not only do I not trust the NL review, I would also argue that NL currently lacks any genuine enthusiasm for Fire Emblem.
I do agree with you guys about this site needing more hype towards fortune's weave and other upcoming big games such as persona 4 revival and persona 6,
I found a good spoiler free video that I recommend watching before starting the game tomorrow:
Favourite series,
Xenoblade, Trails/Kiseki, Ys, Persona, Fire emblem, Tales and square enix jrpgs.
In addition I found something really awesome Nintendo has translated the fire emblem fortune's weave manga on Nintendo today you can read it immediately:
@uncleMike It's going to be interesting to see how they end up treating the series if this game sells extremely well. A lot of people I've seen who had no interest in Fire Emblem are currently interested in Fortune's Weave.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
Looks really good but unfortunately my backlog is terrible.
I've instructed my household to listen for signs in the coming weeks that I'm thinking of buying Fire emblem so they can gently yet firmly remind me that I just bought Elden Ring and Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 and have yet to play through Path of Radiance on NSO
@uncleMike i'm not gonna lie, they had no business covering every time they revealed a new character on nintendo today, as much as that feels exactly in the scope of this hateful site.
i guess they could've made one once the bulk of them were shown off, but that's it.
Agreed... Yeah... I guess it would be kinda stupid to cover every single character reveal (no Nintendo Treehouse still bugs me though).
You're right... meltdown over. I've made enough of a spectacle of myself today. Gonna take a deep breath, relax, and look forward to playing Fortune's Weave tomorrow.

@Polvasti I still think even with that article output, it's weird that the review feels like it was written by someone who really has no interest at all in the game they're reviewing.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
To be fair, I put a total of probably 70+ hours across three Fire emblem games and have only mild interest in them in any way (much of which is frustration Advance Wars died for a series I like a lot less, the rest likely being just based on being a Nintendo and Smash Bros fan (no I'm not one of those weirdos mad about FE representation in Smash)). If I gave one an 8, I'd potentially be super enthusiastic the series could even do that, which it did not for the 3 games I played imo.
Tbh, the most enthusiastic I've been since before I got into the first one I tried (FE 2003) is hearing that that Echoes remake thing had a cool dungeon traversal mode and consistent use of voice acting for everything, since my pet peeve is always the lack of consistent use of voice acting in games. (you could've voiced those parts with the main characters too if you wanted to Xenoblade 3, don't lie to me!)
kk, would you be able to stomach the idea intelligent systems... simply doesn't care about the wars series anymore? i dunno, it rubs me the wrong way whenever someone said a series "died" for something else. it's not impossible, but to me it's more likely that most series one could describe as "killed' is moreso because the devs just stopped caring, especially as fire emblem is also turn-based strategy, but a much larger scope.
@squiddu-real I mean, that opens an entire can of worms about wondering the sincere interest in all major game devs' towards whether they choose to make games in certain IPs for artistic reasons. We do not know if they stopped caring about Advance Wars or realized consistent success was more important and more worth caring about then whether they divided things more evenly among their two major tactics series or not.
I would assume they are not actively against Advance Wars continuing but do not have the time for it with continued interest, both artistically and commercial, to make Fire Emblem games, but I do not know.
I do know Monolith Soft has regularly tried to pitch new ideas to Nintendo and instead go back to making more Xenoblade even after 3 was considered to be an ending point for the series, so I absolutely think Fire Emblem doing surprisingly well after Awakening helped decide Advance Wars' fate (well I guess now the issues with the remakes + bad timing + stubborn refusal to sell the game cheaper when people were begging for exactly that decided its fate). I do not even blame them, I don't think an Advance Wars game (barring Nintendo as a whole somehow becoming 5X more popular than now in my lifetime) will ever sell as well as Three Houses has. Sucks tho.
Only played just over two hours since launch, but I feel I already have so much I want to say and I've not even made it to Dagsion yet.
There is a bit of "Switchiness" to the visuals and the framerate, but it still feels like a big visual leap to Engage and especially Three Houses. Attack animations don't feel as smooth as they did in Engage, but I do think the rumours about more advanced classes getting better animations to denote the skill of the unit is true, cause Cai's Dad is like parrying arrows mid air and stuff and it is cool as hell.
I am surprised by how much of a "game" this feels, with so much of Three Houses being swapping between menus and combat scenarios, and Engage being mostly combat scenarios and then clean up admin and right into the next battle, FW's opening being heavy on cutscenes and non-combat scenarios makes it feel more like I am playing a traditional story driven JRPG (in a good way). I also don't generally play games like this dubbed, but I really fell in love with the variety of voices on offer in the dub when they previewed the characters, so dubbed it is.
And even though I have had access to them only briefly, the world map, the clash battles and other such things offer a nice pacing mechanism to break up the game flow, meaning it isn't like the other games above where it just feels like you're swapping between battles and menus / admin back and forth. And that isn't to say the actual on the grid combat isn't great, cause it is absolute is, no one does tactics combat quite like FE and I just love it.
I went with Cai as my first route, and will probably rotate through as I go.
