The currently airing episode of the Simpsons has one the subplots being about Pikimon Go, an obvious reference to the wildly popular smartphone game. It satirizes the game with the whole town being obsessed and ignoring life. What do you think of the episode? In my opionin it is far too late.

Too late? Yup. The Simpsons virtually always is, just like every cartoon on TV except South Park. Production on the episode probably started a week after the game came out.

Didn't this already happen? Like, an old episode was edited to have Pokemon Go in it?

@Joeynator3000 Yes, but that was only a few seconds long. This is an entire episode based on it.

That was a random scene from an old episode repurposed as a Pokémon Go parody for promotional purposes. I don't believe that it ever constituted part of any full episode (in the old days, scenes from earlier episodes would be recycled and dubbed with new dialogue to fill for time and/or cut costs; I can't remember the last time that the show has done this in more recent years).

Considering that a Simpsons episode takes 9 months to complete, The Simpsons can never truly be "topical" unless they redub a scene prior to going to air in order to address a current event (chalkboard gags in the opening credits will occasionally address topical issues). Also, considering that FOX never airs the episodes in their original production order, the episodes have usually been completed at least a few months prior to going to air, and in some, albeit rarer instances, some episodes may be a year or two old by the time they are broadcast). From Season 3 on, all subsequent seasons of The Simpsons have included "holdover" episodes from previous production season(s), which generally comprise the first third or so of each season.
