Topic: Consoles and console games no longer made in Japan

It's disappointing how game consoles and console games are no longer made in Japan and yet we still get charged the same or even more amount of money. We should now pay less for products of lower quality made in China and USA. Hopefully handheld games will continue to be made in Japan and not elsewhere.

Well actually I doesn't faz me much because most my games will be digital anyway, the only thing physical is the consoles themselves

The games themselves are still made in Japan (as in all the coding and that jazz), the discs themselves are what's manufactured elsewhere.

Also, even though the consoles are manufactured in China, they're still designed in Japan.

You're thinking about this in entirely the wrong way.

If Japanese companies kept the manufacturing of components in Japan, the prices of the completed products would have to go up. It's not cheap to keep a factory in Japan.

As the price of completed products goes up, fewer people buy them. For a volume industry such as hardware console manufacturing, fewer sales means fewer games produced for the console, which means less money for, say, Nintendo. Less money for Nintendo means less R & D work and software development. This kick-starts a downward spiral of less games - more people lose interest in Nintendo - less sales - less games that would result in Nintendo going bankrupt.

So, because you incorrectly believe that cheap components produced in China are inferior to the quality of components of those made in Japan, you actually want Nintendo to go bankrupt.

Ahh, the Foxconn topic. Hard to put the blame on Nintendo, or Japanese companies in general. Your iPhones/smartphones and all that goodness all come from the same factory/sweatshop.

So, not sure what kind of image you're trying to place on Japan here, since a lot of companies are guilty of it. OlymicCho is right, and he said it better than ?I could, so I'll just point you to his comments.

Websites like Gawker and Wikileaks have all done extensive research on this subject, more so than we could ever hope to cover. For more information, you should visit those sites. Nintendo does a lot of quality control on their products (at least the ones sold in Japan, I've never looked at how NoA or NoE deal with it, but I'm 99.9% sure its the same), so its not a matter of quality. There are other issues here in talking about Foxconn, but if your main worry is that your 3DS is going to break in its first week, I can assure you that it'll be just fine. Nintendo has their warranties and repair services anyway.
