Yes, this is the real deal. Nintendo is going to launch a brand-new DSi in Japan before the year closes out. The only difference between the current model and this new model will be screen size. The latest revision will come with 4 inch screens, but will cost 18900 yen...the same price as the current DSi. No word on this revision outside of Japan at this time. Thanks to Nick for the heads up.
Another source said something about this being for older gamers (or anyone with poor eyesight, I imagine), but still, I really don't see the point in the slightest. What with this only being a minor hardware change, it might just be like the backlit Game Boy Advance SP: rolled out quietly and not made a big deal of. If NOA or NOE haven't had anyone contact them saying the screens are too small, it might even be quite a while (if at all) before we get this in the West.
I'd still rather have a DSi with 3.25" screens. That's what new DS and DSi games and Nintendo DSiWare are designed for, surely?
Prehaps it's designed for all the little old ladies, who's eyesite may not be what it once was, yet they still wanna train their brain and read their 100 classic books, you know The OAPSi
Just make this a pheriphial. They come out with a new app, and it makes a link with the pheriphial so what is on the DSi is on the wider screen. So, it would be a shell. DSi in a new shell, Nintendo power!
