Topic: Will 3D still be there on the next successor in the DS family?

I really wonder what Nintendo's feelings are towards their choice to incorporate auto-stereoscopic 3D in the 3DS and whether they contribute it, in part, as a factor of success meanwhile selling a whopping 35 million units. It's difficult to tell what role the presence of 3D played during the purchase decision process of many consumers, I certainly feel it's an important part of the Nintendo 3DS and would hate to see it removed on the successor or future 3DS revision. I don't think my concerns are unwarranted, given the existence of the 2DS, patent lawsuit Nintendo related to the 3D screen, etc.

Well, for me the glasses-free 3D was a big factor in my purchasing decision. Granted it wasn't the only one, I was going to get the system no matter what it was because I've never been letdown by a Nintendo handheld system before but I'd be lying if I said the 3D didn't factor it at all. I use it for pretty much every game and thought it was very nicely done in Street Fighter IV, Super Mario 3D Land, Dead of Alive Dimensions, Ocarina of Time 3D, RE: Revelations, A Link Between Worlds and both Mighty Switch Force 1 and 2.

I think this is why Nintendo released the 2DS. I personally find the 3D to be really cool and useful in some games, but completely useless and/or gimmicky in others. I would prefer to have 3D because it changes the game completely, but some games simply don't need it.

But I really can't say if Nintendo will keep it. Its not something you NEED, but its rather something you WANT. Its quite a strange concept having something that you don't really need, but you'd miss it if it wasn't there.

For backwards compatibility reasons, I think it will still exist as a feature of some sort. Nintendo did say that they want 3D to remain part of their products... just maybe not as the main focus next time.

i think having games in full real 3d without glasses is the most amazing thing ever. maybe the novelty has worn off a bit since it launched, but i still think it adds a lot to games, even 2d-ish ones. mario 3d land really proved how useful it is and how much of a difference it makes, especially with the swinging spikes and stuff. i just wish there were more 3d platformers to take advantage of the added precision we now have in depth perception

I bought the system on launch because of the 3D. While it's nice and would surely profit from a higher resolution in the next Ninty handheld it probably won't matter much when it comes to making up my mind on if i should buy the next one or not.

I'd like the 3D (and would be OK with it remaining) if they could sort out the sweet spot issue, so that the slightest movement wouldn't ruin it. At the moment it just gives me too much of a headache to bother with. I also never quite understood the whole "it helps with depth perception in 3D games" thing. I specifically experimented with this in 3D Land and I don't think it made any difference. But anyway, considering 3D proved itself very much not to be a selling point in the early days of the 3DS and the console skyrocketed when they removed all focus from it, I wouldn't be surprised if they ditched it, but I reckon they'll keep it as a feature, just very much a low-key, optional thing for devs that want to use it.

I've never had issues keeping the "sweet spot", so I'm really not sure where those complaints are coming from... in my experience I've found the sweet spot to be rather large...

the only problem for me is finding a comfortable way to keep the 3D "sweet spot"(might be because I use glasses so the sweet spot can be a little off compared to the normal)

Doesn't matter to me since I always play with the 3D off due to getting migraines from the 3D effect.

There will be backwards compatibility with the next handheld so...yeah. 3D will still be there.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

I seriously doubt it, it was an absolute failure, as far as sales are concerned. And, it's not just for Nintendo, 3D TV's are also not selling as well as the makers of those TV's had hoped. Yeah, they sell...but it didn't create a firestorm, like the original transition from SDTV to HDTV.

Anyway, all I am hoping for is a larger form factor than even the 3DSXL. Even some sort of tablet sized handheld, would really be nice.

I'm guessing they wont re-use 3D maybe they will have something better by then, in any case it wouldn't really be a selling point for me; 3D is nice and all but I normally turn it off after a while.

Initially I was going to upgrade my DS Lite with a 2DS because I really didn't care if I had 3D or not. Ended up going with a 3DS XL for the larger screen and really like the 3D. True, some games do not work well with it, especially ones like Mario Kart if you're using the motion controlled steering (just can't keep in in the sweet spot). I've noticed most of the post game surveys from Club Nintendo ask you how much of the game you played in 3D, I'm sure this will help them decide. I'm guessing they'll keep in in there though. I could see the next Wii adding 3D as well with the Glasses-Free 3D TVs coming out in the next few years.

Considering how 3D is rendered useless with things that can be used for gameplay (like Gyroscope) and considering how Nintendo put out the 2DS, I really doubt they'll incorporate 3D in the next system. They wouldn't need it for backwards compatibility, and most consumers just don't seem to care about 3D. It would help bring costs down as well.

Your own experience hardly negates anyone else's, though.
The XL model was lauded for offering a larger viewing area in either dimension, so that might be an option too.

Well, for me at least, I do not lose the 3D effect from slight movements as some people seem to complain about... yes, the 3D gets screwed up when using motion controls, but most games temporarily suspend the 3D when motion controls are active (Mario Kart 7 being a notable exception). But I can manage quite a bit of range of motion without losing the 3D...

I love the 3D and it was the main reason I bought the system. I would be very disappointed if its successor didn't have it.

I never understood the complaints about the sweet spot. At least in my case, I automatically hold the system at the appropriate distance and angle to see the 3D perfectly. Not sure how much movement would bother it, as I don't tend to move much when playing the system. Do people tend to constantly fidget when playing 3DS games? If not, I don't see why it would be much of an issue...

Not sure if the 3D will survive this gen, seeing the somewhat mixed reaction the public has had to it in general. Most people I know who own the system tend to play with the 3D off.

I'm guessing Streetpass, or some variant of it, is here to stay on Nintendo portables, though.

Ugh. Men.

sugarpixel

@Ralizah yeah, I don't fidget either haha! ...but the system will be prone to slight movements; being human it's impossible to be completely still... but this slight movement will not screw up the 3D.
